UK's 'sunniest' seaside town in May with 241 hours of sun and miles of beaches

Daily Mirror12-05-2025

Southend-on-Sea in Essex has been named the UK's sunniest seaside town in May - with seven miles of beaches and a host of attractions for visitors to enjoy in the good weather
As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, seaside towns across the UK start to come alive. Local businesses throw open their doors in anticipation of the summer rush, beaches begin to fill with eager sun-seekers, and there's a palpable sense of excitement in the air.
However, the unpredictable British weather can still throw a spanner in the works in May, so it's always handy to know where you're most likely to catch some rays. According to a study by Aqua, Southend-on-Sea in Essex takes the crown as the UK's sunniest seaside town in May, boasting an impressive average of 241 hours of sunshine throughout the month.

The research also revealed that it has the second-lowest rainfall, with just 41.6mm recorded on average, making it one of the driest spots in the country during spring.

Nestled on the Thames Estuary, Southend boasts seven miles of diverse beaches, from bustling family-friendly locations to tranquil stretches perfect for unwinding.
The area is home to nine unique beaches, including Thorpe Bay, which proudly holds both Blue Flag and Quality Coast awards and is flanked by a charming traditional promenade, reports the Express.
Visit Southend assures that there's something for everyone. Chalkwell Beach is a hit for its expansive space and rock-pooling opportunities at low tide, while Shoeburyness provides a serene getaway, complete with grassy picnic areas and rows of colourful beach huts.
Southend Pier, the world's longest pleasure pier, extends over a mile into the estuary and even features its own railway line and museum.
But there's more to this destination than just sun, sea and sand. Sealife Adventure, hailed by Visit Southend as the top aquarium in the southeast, is home to an array of creatures including sharks, penguins, otters, meerkats and even monkeys.

Right next door, thrill-seekers can enjoy Adventure Island, a free-entry theme park boasting over 60 rides. For those seeking tranquillity, the town offers nature reserves like Two Tree Island and Belton Hills, not to mention award-winning parks perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Culture vultures are well catered for too, with venues such as the Cliffs Pavilion and Palace Theatre, alongside a variety of museums and art galleries showcasing exhibitions.
Accessibility is a breeze, with direct trains from London Liverpool Street reaching Southend in under an hour, while Southend Airport provides links to select European destinations.
Basking in abundant sunshine, minimal rainfall, and a seven-mile stretch of coastline, it's no wonder Southend has been crowned the UK's "beer garden capital" by Aqua, boasting 281 beer gardens per 100,000 residents – ideal spots for enjoying a pint in the sunshine.

'We woke up on dream Turkey holiday to screams of terror - I couldn't breathe'

British pensioners tell how they feel 'lucky to be alive' after escaping horrific blaze at their hotel during a holiday in Turkey. They didn't think they would make it back to the UK in one piece Daniel and Christine Steel, who are both nearly 70, had been enjoying a break at a five-star resort in Turkey when a terrifying fire broke out. The pensioners were among six people taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and Daniel said at one point during the nightmare, he phoned his daughter because he didn't think they'd be coming home alive. ‌ Daniel from Bradford told his local paper the Telegraph & Argus: "We feel lucky to be alive. We were woken up after hearing screams of 'fire, fire' and 'help, help!' Our room became dense with smoke - we couldn't breathe. ‌ "We were on the top floor and had to make a decision about what to do. Put it this way, if it wasn't for the balcony, we wouldn't be here now telling you this story. Below us was a 250ft drop and it was pitch black - all the electricity went off because of the fire." The couple climbed over the balcony rails onto a roof and held onto the rails for 'dear life'. But pensioner Daniel pulled a nerve in his leg and is still in a lot of pain. "Most of the hotel was evacuated but we came across some other guests who found themselves in the same position as us," he continued. "At that point, there were 11 of us screaming for help. We were eventually rescued by firefighters after what felt like a lifetime." After leaving hospital, they were moved to alternative accommodation before later returning to the hotel to collect their belongings. But Daniel said all their holiday things were ruined. And although the couple are glad to be back home, Christine is still struggling to forget about their hellish experience. She added: "We keep reliving what happened - and thinking what might have happened if we hadn't had a balcony. It was certainly a holiday from hell - but we're grateful to be alive."

British tourist left gobsmacked by one thing in Spanish supermarket

She saw some things that you wouldn't be able to get in the UK. Holidaymakers know there's something special about soaking up the sun with an ice-cold can of Fanta Lemon and sharing a pack of Lays. However, those facing a late-night arrival may worry about finding snacks and water after landing in the wee hours. Fear not for those heading to Spain, as one woman has highlighted that some supermarkets there are open at 1am – quite unlike what we're used to here in the UK, reports the Express. ‌ Florence Grace exclaimed on her video post: "Still open at one am?! Spanish supermarkets are the best," showcasing her intriguing finds within the store. ‌ Captivated by the "colour of this Sunny D," Florence quipped: "you're not in Spain unless you get this," in reference to the popular Chovi Allioli". Delighted by discoveries including "biscuit chocolates" akin to Maltesers and a milkshake labelled "very sickly", Florence revealed delectable offerings not found on UK shelves. She highlighted the steal of getting "mini paella" for under three euros, and a full bottle of sangria for less than two, noting these are absolute steals. With a giggle, she added: "Or, you can get a carton of wine for 99 cents," showcasing the litre-sized bargain. Florence enthused about the delights found in Spanish stores, saying: "This is the best thing about Spanish shops," particularly impressed by the on-the-spot fresh orange juice machine. ‌ Her exploration revealed more treats, noting: "A whole a** cake" and marvelling at the deliciousness of Spanish donuts, suggesting one can do without a resort when such delights are readily available at local supermarkets. Excitedly, she mentioned the bargain snack options, including: "You can get a whole big bag of muffins," while browsing through treats like Milka chocolate and affordable chorizo for only two euros. ‌ When it comes to healthy eating, Florence highlighted: "In Spain, you can get a tub of carrots and a tub of guacamole," ideal for barbecue gatherings with loved ones. Continuing her journey through the aisles, Florence pointed out unique "ketchup flavour" crisps and then stumbled upon a sizable bag of churros. Reflecting on the cost of drinks, Florence noted the affordability, exclaiming: "I forget how cheap the alcohol is here," finding a can of San Miguel for just 73 cents—a stark contrast to the price of a bubble tea at four euros and 50 cents, a fact that astonishes Brits. Concluding her video, Florence expressed her fondness for Spanish confectionery, declaring: "they do the best sweets in Spain" and delighting in the idea that early morning supermarket visits mean no holiday cravings need to be overlooked.
