A perfect 30-0 as a freshman, South Elgin's Allison Garbacz builds upon past performances. ‘I'm not new to this.'
Young and precocious, South Elgin's Allison Garbacz doesn't get rattled by the next challenge.
Even though she's only a rookie as far as the high school level goes, Garbacz still understands the rigorous demands of being elite at her sport. And that comes from past performances.
'I've been wrestling for a really long time — I'm not new to this,' she said. 'It might not seem like it because I'm just a freshman. But I've waited a long time, almost years, just for this moment.'
Garbacz maintained her sensational start Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Schaumburg senior Madeline Zerafa-Lazarevic in the 145-pound championship match of the Schaumburg Sectional.
While remaining unbeaten, Garbacz (30-0) qualified for the individual state meet at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
Zerafa-Lazarevic (44-2) entered Saturday's final with experience and savvy. Garbacz rendered those advantages null and void, though, taking control with a takedown in the first period.
Without a doubt, Garbacz didn't blink, either.
'There's definitely nerves, but I feel that helps me push myself to be the best I possibly can be,' she said. 'I work hard, I have good coaches and I put the effort in, which is all you really need.'
Azucena Rodriguez, a junior who went 3-2 Saturday and finished just short of qualifying for state at 115, said Garbacz does a great job of meshing together technique and tenacity.
'I think she has a great consciousness about her moves when she's out there,' Rodriguez said. 'She definitely thinks of everything and knows what she is doing.
'She believes in the coaches, and you see that in her confidence and her support.'
Garcacz's father is an assistant coach for the girls wrestling program at South Elgin. Her older brother, Austin, was a standout wrestler at Bartlett.
'Her best quality is her technique,' South Elgin coach Robert Tornabene said. 'Sometimes, I really have to search for things in the room that she doesn't really know.
'She started the season at 155 pounds and did really well there. She has this quiet confidence about her.'
A swimmer, Garbacz competes in the sprints and the breaststroke. She also plays defender in soccer. Wrestling, however, is the sport that best suits her manner and nature.
'A lot of other sports, you can hide behind the team,' she said. 'With wrestling, there's nobody doing that for you.
'I feel like wrestling has always helped me work hard and have the mentality of trying to be the best I could be at something.'
In the sectional semifinals, Garbacz gave up her first takedown of the season against Batavia junior Anabelle Guthke, then responded with a pin in the first period.
The championship round was a rare match that went the distance for Garbacz. Her blend of quickness, speed and superior technique has been a revelation.
'My style depends on the day,' she said. 'I like shooting except when I don't like it. (Saturday) I was quick with my shots and got into my offense.
'I'm always going to do whatever I know will work in that moment.'
As the youngest of three children with a significant age gap, Garbacz wanted to mirror her siblings' success while making her own reputation.
'My siblings were always smart and good at sports,' she said. 'I think I've always had that desire to be the best at something.'
Bookish and quiet, Garbacz's favorite subject is math. She has an analytical approach, always looking to optimize her scoring.
'Being good at learning has taught me how to be a student of wrestling,' she said. 'It feels really good to put the work in and go to state. I really have to stay focused.
'I know everything I've done has prepared me well.'

Defense delivers as Makayla Van Dinther pitches St. Charles East to shutout of South Elgin. ‘Stressful situations.'
Catch her if you can, but it isn't easy. Makayla Van Dinther may not be an intimidating physical presence in the circle for St. Charles East, but the junior right-hander has been pure magic during an impressive postseason run. it has the surprising Saints one win away from the state finals and a trip to Peoria. 'I knew we were going to be a tough out,' St. Charles East coach Jarod Gutesha said. 'With 15 losses, everybody is ranked above us, but I knew our lineup was going to be tough. 'With our schedule, we've experienced disappointment with a stretch of one and two-run losses, but you learn from those disappointments.' Van Dinther proved that point again Friday in the Class 4A Palatine Fremd Sectional championship game, completing a six-hit shutout for the Saints in a 5-0 victory over South Elgin. The fifth-seeded Storm (29-5) appeared to have her on the ropes multiple times, but she escaped trouble that included back-to-back bases-loaded jams in the third and fourth innings. Van Dinther (13-9) struck out five and walked just one in winning for the third time in four playoff games to go with a save for the sixth-seeded Saints (23-15), who will play at 6 p.m. Monday in the Barrington Supersectional against the host Fillies (33-3-1), a 2-0 winner over Huntley. Afterward, Van Dinther passed some of that credit to junior catcher Hayden Sujack. 'Those jams were stressful situations,' Van Dinther said. 'But my catcher and I talked, and we located some counts because it was a tight strike zone. I just trusted my defense.' Senior third baseman Holly Smith provided some stellar defense in the third inning, charging a grounder on the line, scooping the ball up and flipping it to Sujack out of her glove all in one motion for the third out on a force play at the plate. And second baseman Alyse Price almost saw it coming. 'Makayla threw a great pitch,' Smith said. 'It was a weak contact. It might have rolled foul, but I was ahead of the runner so I tried the glove flip and Hayden made a nice stretch. 'It's funny. Alyse Price and I were just talking about glove flipping before the game and it comes up. First time I've ever used it at third base.' Van Dinther, who bailed herself out the next inning by retiring a batter on a comeback grounder with the bases loaded and two out, appreciated the Smith-Sujack connection. 'Amazing play,' said Van Dinther, who also praised a catch by senior left fielder Eden Corcoran. 'That kind of saved my butt there. We played good all-around. Our outfield did a great job. 'Eden made an amazing catch to save another run that was great to see.' Van Dinther ended up stranding nine runners. South Elgin's defensive struggles made it tough on Loyola-bound senior left-hander Anna Kiel, who started in the circle for a second straight day but was lifted after three innings trailing 2-0. Sparked by Sujack's double, St. Charles East took advantage of three errors to score twice in the first inning. The Storm made seven errors, allowing the Saints to add a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. Junior right fielder Lexi Majkszak added two hits and two RBIs for St. Charles East, while sophomore center fielder Morgan Beers went 4-for-4. 'Definitely my first four-hit game,' Beers said. 'We had to get the job done, and as long as I had good energy, I was really confident at the plate.' At the same time, Gutesha has faith in Beers. 'She puts the bat on the ball consistently and she's got wheels,' he said. 'Speed don't slump.' Beers drove in the fourth run and also scored the fifth to support Van Dinther. 'Even when she was in those jams, she was still throwing well,' Gutesha said of Van Dinther. 'She was still hitting her spots, and it wasn't like they were barreling it up and hitting gaps, gaps, gaps. 'She was doing her thing.'

Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has Hawks Swap Trae Young for Three Former Lottery Picks
Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has Hawks Swap Trae Young for Three Former Lottery Picks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There could be a change for the Atlanta Hawks this offseason after missing the NBA playoffs for the second straight year. The Hawks haven't been competitive, despite having Trae Young, the league's leader in assists per game. With the lack of a competent roster, it could be time for Atlanta to trade Young. Advertisement Last season, the Hawks had a 40-42 record and lost in the Play-In Tournament. The organization hasn't been in the conversation of being a playoff team for a while. Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey suggested that it's time for the Hawks to consider trading the All-Star guard. Given that the front office hasn't been able to give Young enough help to contend, Bailey suggested that a fresh start with a different franchise could be the next step. Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young is guarded by Orlando Magic center Wendell Carter Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images According to Bailey, the team that would benefit from Young would be the Orlando Magic. In the postseason, it became clear that the Magic need a point guard who's capable of being an elite floor general. Advertisement The blockbuster trade idea would send Young to the Magic in exchange for Jalen Suggs, Anthony Black, Jett Howard and a top-10-protected 2027 first-round pick. Acquiring the three former lottery picks could be the perfect fit for what Atlanta is trying to do. "The Hawks have never been able to figure out how to surround him with a workable defense that can cover for his shortcomings on that end," Bailey argued. "And they're brewing their own little positionless philosophy that could benefit from Jalen Suggs' defense and a few more on-ball opportunities for the likes of Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels and Zaccharie Risacher." The Hawks have a promising young core in Zaccharie Risacher and Dyson Daniels. Young is the only player who doesn't fit the Hawks' timetable. With the Hawks, Young has developed into a four-time All-Star and one of the best facilitators in the NBA. He has averaged 25.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 9.8 assists in seven seasons.
