North Chennai residents form human chain demanding halt to waste-to-energy plan in Kodungaiyur
Jaya, a resident of Kodungaiyur, said, 'Locals here already suffer respiratory and skin infections due to the dumpyard and muddy roads. Now, if the Chennai Corporation's incinerator project is implemented, the emissions will affect us and the future generations here drastically.'
She joined thousands of protesters in a signature campaign and human chain demonstration against the Greater Chennai Corporation's plan to build a waste-to-energy plant as part of an integrated waste management facility in Kodungaiyur's 75-acre Metrowater land near the existing dump yard in North Chennai.
This was headed by the Federation of North Chennai Residents' Welfare Associations from Sivasakthi Amman temple in Ezhil Nagar of Kodungaiyur to the signal close to Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College in Vyasarpadi on Sunday.
Nearly 10,000 took part, including singer T.M. Krishna, members of NGO Poovulagin Nanbargal, GCC councillors R. Jayaraman and B. Vimala of Communist Party of India (Marxist), S. Jeevan and J. Dilli Babu of Indian National Congress (INC).
Ram, a shopkeeper and a resident for 10 years in Kodungaiyur, said, 'People are also partly responsible. My parents have not followed waste segregation, so, I also did not. If segregation helps in scrapping the GCC's project, then segregation can be practiced. I will encourage my neighbours too. As a parent of two girls, I fear the Corporation's project may affect future generations' standard of life in Kodungaiyur.'
T.K. Shanmugam, the president of the federation, said, 'The people are aware that the harmful gases released while burning waste would affect the lungs and cause respiratory issues. The residents near the Kodungaiyur dump yard are already facing skin problems. We firmly believe only a safe environment and water supply can help curb people's issues. Already, most of North Chennai is an industrial hub. Introducing an incinerator will further pollute air and waterbodies.'
In a release, the federation said the incinerator plan would affect areas with over 3.5 lakh residents and several schools, colleges, hospitals and other public institutions. It added that environmental clearance had not been obtained, and public consultation was not sought, hence the Tamil Nadu government must abandon the plan.

Chennai Auto Driver Injured After Being Bitten By Rottweilers, Owner Arrested
Chennai: An auto-rickshaw driver was bitten by two Rottweilers in Chennai while waiting near the Washermanpet area. The dogs, reportedly being walked by a minor boy, suddenly charged at the unsuspecting man, causing serious injuries. According to senior police officials, the owner of the dogs, identified as Mahendran, has been arrested and will be remanded. "We are investigating the circumstances under which the attack took place," a senior police officer told NDTV. Preliminary investigations revealed that although the dogs were vaccinated, they were not registered with the Chennai Corporation as required. Authorities confirmed that the Rottweilers have been taken to the city pound pending further examination. The injured auto driver is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital. His wife has filed a formal complaint with the local police. The use of a minor to control the dogs has raised further legal and ethical questions. This incident comes nearly a year after a similar attack in which a young girl was mauled by two Rottweilers at a public park in the city. In response to the recurring threat, the Chennai Corporation had announced plans to enforce stricter regulations, including mandatory muzzling of ferocious breeds like Rottweilers in public areas. But this has not been adopted yet.

"Going back very satisfied": All-party delegation led by Sanjay Jha concludes multi-nation tour, departs for India
Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 3 (ANI): After concluding their multi-nation visit, the all-party delegation led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha departed for India on Tuesday, emphasising that they are going back 'very satisfied' and the job that the Indian Government entrusted to them was accomplished to a 'great extent'. Speaking to ANI, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi asserted that the purpose of their visit has been fulfilled. 'I would say that I feel very much enriched at the end of 13 days of massive touring in five countries. We started the tour on the 21st of May, and today is the 3rd of June, and we are heading towards India. Definitely going to India is very much welcome for all of us. We are looking forward to going to our motherland. But I would definitely say that the purpose with which we had come has been fulfilled in my mind,' she said. The BJP MP mentioned that their purpose was to convey to these countries about Pakistan's support for terrorism. 'We started from Japan, then we went to the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan and Malaysia. Of course, the responses of the governments in five different countries were different from one another, I must say. We have come here with a purpose. We wanted to convey to these countries India's stand on cross-border terrorism. We wanted to tell them that there was zero tolerance for terrorism. We wanted to tell them that Pakistan has been nurturing, promoting, and nourishing terrorism. Therefore, all the countries with whom we had interaction, we requested to put in a word to Pakistan and tell them that this has to stop. Pakistan has been a habitual offender. It has been creating problems for all of us over a period of time, and that is why we have come and met a cross-section of people,' Sarangi said. 'We spoke to a couple of people, a couple of societies, a couple of associations, and we are going back very satisfied. I think the job that had been entrusted to us by the government of India has been accomplished to a great extent,' Aparajita Sarangi said. Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP, John Brittas, another member of the delegation termed their visit as a 'successful' one. 'It has been a successful trip to the five nations. We met many sections of society. We could convey the message of India about what actually happened and how cross-border terrorism affects us. We understand that they appreciate that India wants to be on the path of peace and progress,' Brittas said. Former Indian Ambassador to France Dr Mohan Kumar, who is a member of the all-party delegation led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, said that the takeaway was that there was unanimous and universal condemnation of terrorism. 'We just concluded this visit to five countries...I can confidently all-party delegation was appreciated by all our interlocutors. It was accepted that India spoke in one voice, that is the one takeaway. The second takeaway is that there was a unanimous and universal condemnation of terrorism. There was support for India's action and condolences for victims (of the Pahalgam attack). We have conveyed clearly to them that it was not our choice to have a war and that we were merely responding to the horrific terrorist attacks,' Kumar told ANI. BJP MP Hemang Joshi said that they placed strong emphasis on the issue of cross-border terrorism and the proxy war that Pakistan continues to wage against India. 'In Indonesia and Malaysia, where the Muslim population is comparatively larger, we met not only political leaders but also delegations from various parties. We also engaged with delegations of Islamic scholars, who jointly stated that terrorism and violence have no place in Islam. All these countries want to move forward in peace. They expressed that India has every right to take a stand in the fight against terrorism. Operation Sindoor was widely appreciated by all,' Joshi said. 'Throughout this delegation, we never looked at political parties. For these 15 days, we represented India as 'Team India' and spoke with one voice on behalf of the country,' he asserted. The Indian delegation, led by JD(U) MP Jha, includes BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lal, Pradan Baruah, Hemang Joshi; TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee; CPI-M's John Brittas; and Congress leader Salman Khurshid, among others. Police to register case against zip line owner in Idukki
The Idukki Collector has directed the police to register a criminal case against the wife of M.M. Lambodaran, brother of Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M.M. Mani, on the charge of illegally operating the zip line at Iruttukanam, near Munnar, in Idukki. Collector V. Vigneshwari had issued an order on May 24 suspending all adventure tourism activities in the district in the wake of rain alerts. But after the rain subsided on June 1, the owner resumed the zip line operations without the approval of the district administration. Sources said within three days over 1,500 tourists had made use of the zip line service. The Collector directed immediate suspension of the zip line service after it was brought to her notice. Ms. Vigneshwari said the zip line was operating in violation of the Disaster Management Act and a case would be registered against the owners. A fine would also be imposed. She said the suspension of adventure tourism activities would continue until further notice.
