'Need a resurvey': Veteran Congress leader slams Karnataka caste survey report as 'unscientific'
Veteran Congress leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister M Veerappa Moily has raised serious concerns about the credibility of the state's long-delayed caste survey, arguing that only a new, scientifically conducted study can reflect the true socio-economic and caste composition of Karnataka's population.
Speaking to The New Indian Express in an interview, Moily said the data from the 2015 survey, carried out by the Kantharaj Commission, was outdated, unscientific, and potentially divisive. 'There is a need for a resurvey,' he said. 'We will get an accurate figure only through a fresh survey. Else, the people will dispute the numbers.'
The leak of key details from the report, which remains officially unreleased, has triggered political and public outrage. Prominent caste groups like Lingayats and Vokkaligas are reportedly shown to have significantly smaller populations than previously believed, leading to friction within the Congress and demands for clarification.
Moily warned that the data, if implemented as is, could polarise society and threaten social cohesion. He cited inconsistencies in the reported rise in Muslim population, claimed to be 4 per cent to 6 per cent higher, while several most-backward groups appear underrepresented. 'That's why there is a doubt that the survey was not done scientifically,' he said according to the publication.
He also questioned how the Lingayat population could have declined since the Chinnappa Reddy Commission's report during his own tenure in 1992. 'Ideally, the numbers should only go up,' he added.
With mounting pressure, a recent cabinet meeting ended without consensus, and the government is expected to revisit the issue on May 2. Moily indicated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's cabinet was deliberating on a more acceptable and reliable version of the report, especially with many ministers representing backward and most-backward sections.

Terming the caste census as a "most scientific" exercise, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on said the cabinet will take a decision on its implementation after hearing opinion of all the Ministers.
His comments come amidst opposition to the survey report from various sections of the society calling it "unscientific". They have demanded that it be rejected, and a fresh survey be conducted.
A special cabinet meeting convened to deliberate on the caste census report on last week had ended inconclusive, reportedly amid internal differences within the government.

Minor flooding raises concerns in Kalamassery amid delayed canal renovation project
Kochi: Incessant rains triggered minor flooding in Kalamassery on Sunday morning, with water entering at least five houses on VR Thankappan Road. Though water receded following a break in the downpour, locals remain anxious about the possibility of repeated flooding as monsoon continues. Although the plan received administrative sanction, no visible progress was made. Haritha residents' association president V P Siyad blamed the inaction on political differences between Congress-led municipality and LDF-led state govt. "The project is stuck in limbo due to political conflicts. Meanwhile, ordinary people continue to suffer," he said, urging authorities to act without further delay.

Residents welcome reduction in use of loudspeakers at mosques
Mumbai: Many residents living in densely populated areas and in the vicinity of mosques have welcomed the silence or reduced decibel levels of loudspeakers in mosques. Several residents TOI spoke to on Sunday said they felt a positive change as the mosques in their neighbourhoods either muted loudspeakers or cut down decibels to the permissible limit (55 decibels during daytime and 45 decibels at night). I don't see any decrease in the number of devotees in mosques after azaan stopped being amplified through loudspeakers. This is a relief and should be welcomed," said Mohammed Tarique. Tarique added that he is a practising Muslim who regularly prays five times a day but does not miss the sound of azaan via loudspeakers. Tarique recalled a trend of many mosques which amplified through loudspeakers not just the azaan but even Friday sermons of the imams. "What was the need to make the whole mohalla listen to sermons delivered inside mosques? ... I am glad it has stopped now that loudspeakers are muted or decibels reduced," said Tarique. Kalina resident Abraham Mathai welcomed the move. "I used to put earplugs during azaan on loudspeakers. Now it is a relief for everyone, including students and elderly people. I congratulate even those elders in the community who back this positive move," said Mathai. Khursheed Siddiqui, general secretary, Masjid and Madrassa Mohammadiya at Vikhroli, said that soon after Bombay high court observed in Jan 2025 that "use of loudspeakers is not an essential part of religions", he called for a meeting of elders and explained why loudspeakers' decibel levels needed to be brought down to permissible limit. Mira Road resident Syed Zafar Ahmed lives in a cosmopolitan locality. "If I felt irritated at high decibels of azaan, how would non-Muslims have felt? I am glad many mosques have themselves removed the loudspeakers or are following the court's guidelines on the use of loudspeakers," said Ahmed.

KURUKSHETRA: Haryana chief minister (CM) Nayab Singh Saini announced on Sunday that this year's International Gita Mahotsav (IGM) will be celebrated in collaboration with England, marking a significant step in taking the spiritual message of the Bhagavad Gita to a global audience.
