Could CFP expansion threaten Cy-Hawk Series future?
Could College Football Playoff expansion spell doom for the future of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series?
As SEC Spring Meetings unfolded this week in Destin, Florida, CFP expansion was at the forefront of the discussion. The initial momentum seemed to be CFP expansion toward a 4-4-2-2-1 model.
In the 4-4-2-2-1 model, the Big Ten and SEC would each receive four automatic qualifiers into the College Football Playoff, while the Big 12 and ACC would each receive two. The highest-ranked Group of Six conference champion would also receive an automatic qualifier and then there would be three at-large bids.
Now, it seems that a 5+11 CFP expansion model is picking up steam. In the 5+11 model, each of the five highest-ranked conference champions would receive automatic qualifiers and then 11 at-large bids would be awarded to the highest-ranked teams by the CFP selection committee.
Either expansion road could be enough to convince the SEC to expand its league slate to nine conference games. That would match the Big Ten's current nine-game conference slate. Plus, it sounds like the SEC sticking with an eight-game conference slate is a non-starter for the Big Ten in terms of expanding the playoff to a 5+11 model.
Assuming the CFP expands to 16 teams and the SEC adds a ninth conference game, those changes may also set the stage for the reported Big Ten-SEC scheduling agreement that's been floated about.
LSU head coach Brian Kelly endorsed a potential Big Ten-SEC scheduling agreement on Wednesday.
"Our first goal would be wanting to play Big Ten teams as coaches," Kelly said. "I can speak for the room. We want to play Big Ten teams but you've got to get a partner. You've got to get a partner who says we're in for that, too. So we've made our voice clear, our athletic directors know that as well that we would like that. Our commissioner obviously heard us well. The rest will be up to what gets negotiated."
But, a potential Big Ten-SEC scheduling agreement could come with other scheduling consequences.
Under that scenario, Iowa would play a nine-game Big Ten slate and then add an annual SEC nonconference date on top of that.
With 10 of 12 games already filled up with Big Ten and SEC foes, would the Hawkeyes be willing to still sign up for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game annually? That would mean an 11th Power Four contest and leave just one final open date for a likely FCS or lower-level FBS opponent.
In November of 2022, the University of Iowa and Iowa State University extended their scheduling agreement through the 2027 season. That ensures the date this season on Sept. 6 in Ames, a meeting in Iowa City on Sept. 12, 2026 and their contest in Ames on Sept. 11, 2027.
If the Big Ten and SEC do indeed strike up a scheduling agreement, the Cy-Hawk Series and other nonconference in-state rivalries for Big Ten and SEC programs could be at risk.
SEC schools Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and South Carolina all have annual in-state rivalry games as does the Big Ten's Washington. USC also has its annual nonconference series against Notre Dame.
Iowa owns a 47-24 all-time mark in the series and have won seven of the past nine in the in-state rivalry.

Alabama Announces Big Kalen DeBoer News on Friday

Alabama Announces Big Kalen DeBoer News on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kalen DeBoer is entering a pivotal second season as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide after taking over for Nick Saban in 2024. In his debut season, Alabama narrowly missed the 12-team College Football Playoff, finishing with a 9–4 overall record and 5–3 in SEC play. Advertisement The Tide appeared poised to make the expanded playoff for much of the season, but a late-season loss to Oklahoma ultimately dashed those hopes. While last season is now in the rearview, DeBoer has found himself back in the spotlight this week following the announcement of the highly anticipated College Football 26 video game cover, which features Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Alabama sophomore wide receiver Ryan Williams. In addition to the buzz around the cover, Alabama revealed that DeBoer — along with his offensive and defensive coordinators — has chosen to be featured in this year's edition of the game. Participation is optional for coaches and players, and DeBoer's inclusion further connects the Crimson Tide to what is expected to be a blockbuster release when the game launches in July. Advertisement Alabama's post on social media read, "They're in the game," tagging head coach Kalen DeBoer, OC Ryan Grubb, and DC Kane Wommack. Fans reacted to the news: "Love this. Much better," a fan said. Someone else added, "Roll tide! Get with the times coaches!! RTR." Another fan posted, "LET'S GOOOOOOO!" "I can't wait for Deboer to do this," one more fan commented. Is Titans QB Cam Ward the NFL's most 'forgotten prospect?

Is Titans QB Cam Ward the NFL's most 'forgotten prospect? Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2025 NFL draft, has largely been overlooked by the entire NFL. Even on draft day, the media was more focused on what was happening with Shedeur Sanders than on talking to a guy who was a zero-star recruit out of high school that turned into the top passer in his draft class. But, that's okay with Ward, he always operates with a chip on his shoulder and this only adds fuel to the fire. The Tennessee Titans future franchise quarterback isn't being overlooked by everyone, though. Kyle Brandt has ranted on the lack of coverage of Cam Ward on multiple occasions, and now Bleacher Report named him a top-five candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year. It is rare to see the first overall pick become the forgotten prospect from his draft class. Well, that is precisely what's happening to Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward. The most gifted thrower in the 2025 class has rarely been discussed since the rookie minicamp began. The Titans are in a rebuilding phase, and Ward is essential to any turnaround. That being said, it is questionable if the team has enough offensive talent around Ward to reap the full benefits of his abilities. Ward transferred to Miami from Washington State ahead of the 2024 college football season and ended up elevating the Hurricanes to a near-ACC championship and College Football Playoff berth. He is accustomed to elevating an average supporting cast and receiving corps. Ward is tasked with repeating this in Tennessee, as Calvin Ridley is his only above-average target. The weapons around Ward are young and unproven, including three rookie wide receivers and rookie tight end Gunnar Helm. History says don't count him out, but he'll need a magical debut to overcome the roster's limitations. Bleacher Report may have added Ward to this list, but they clearly don't think he should be there based on this write-up. It's almost as if it was an obligatory add in case he comes out and shocks the NFL the way Jayden Daniels did last year, a half-hearted inclusion. The Titans don't have a lot of big names or guys you might consider superstars at their positions. What they do have is consistent and reliable players, plus added some veterans to the offensive line. Tennessee is absolutely in a rebuild, and expectations should be modest for Ward, but let's not count out what the Titans have done to provide him with weapons and protection. Despite the undertone of the comments, Ward should definitely be included in this conversation because he has just as much of a chance to blow expectations out of the water as any other rookie.

Marlon Humphrey continues his social media assault of Ravens rivals

Marlon Humphrey continues his social media assault of Ravens rivals Marlon Humphrey is no stranger to throwing jabs online, and with OTAs underway, he's throwing the gloves on again. Old-school NFL aficionados who'd rather see beefs settled on the field may not have understood Marlon Humphrey had he played in another era. They certainly would have respected his game, though. The Baltimore Ravens star was part of a College Football Playoff National Championship-winning team in 2015. His first eight years at football's highest level produced quite an enviable resume. Humphrey is a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro. He has also mastered the art of psychological warfare. No one throws a verbal jab quite like the talented and sometimes brash Ravens cornerback. Few do a better job of dismantling an opponent before kickoff. Many have fallen victim to a Marlon Humphrey tirade. Recently, he set his sights on the Cincinnati Bengals organization. Marlon Humphrey stirs the pot with a Bengals troll on social media. What a time to be alive. The Cleveland Browns still have no idea what they are doing. The Pittsburgh Steelers are self-destructing, and they don't have a quarterback. The Bengals are suddenly 'the Bungles again. Cincy isn't just doing its best to damage its relationship with its best defensive player beyond repair. They also have yet to sign their first-round draft choice, Shemar Stewart, as he is holding out and sitting out of offseason workouts because of a contract dispute. Stewart's issue isn't money. It's a disagreement over language that Cincinnati attempted to wedge into the deal. It appears the Bengals would like to have the option of voiding guaranteed money if he ever defaults on his contract. The issue lies in that language not being in Ja'Marr Chase's deal or Amarius Mims'. Stewart's representation wants consistency. The Bengals want control. As you might have imagined, Humphrey noticed... When Baltimore announced the signing of rookie Malaki Starks, Marlon captioned that photo by stating, 'Contract wasn't signed but still practicing (hand clap emoji)'. Though that may not seem like much, most caught what he was stating. Starks came to work and trusted that business would take care of itself. Stewart continues to sit because he is unappreciative of how he is being handled. The Ravens' longest-tenured star noticed and pointed it out publicly. That primetime game featuring Baltimore and Cincinnati keeps getting more interesting, doesn't it? Joe Burrow is sick of playing night games at M&T Bank Stadium. Humphrey never gets sick of finding new ways to play mind games with his opponents. The AFC North is going to be a warzone again, and football aficionados everywhere wouldn't have it any other way.
