TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2025: Cheptegei, Chelangat make it double delight for Uganda

The Hindu27-04-2025

It was a Ugandan double in the TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2025, with Joshua Cheptegei and Sarah Chelangat claiming victories in the international elite men's and women's categories respectively on Sunday.
Cheptegei, the reigning Olympic 10,000m champion, underlined his favourite status with a tactically sound run.
Cheptegei stayed on the heels of leader Gabriel Geay for the first half, before going past the Tanzanian at the 6km mark.
No less than four other competitors joined Cheptegei in the new leader group. Like he did at Paris, Cheptegei moved into top gear with a tremendous kick in the final kilometre.
His competition could not keep pace, allowing Cheptegei (27:53s) to make a triumphant return to an event where he claimed silver back in 2014.

Despite a quick start, the men's course record held by Nicholas Kimeli (27:38s) remained intact.
'When I came in 2014, I had zero experience as that was my first international race. I'm so happy to return to Bengaluru this year and win. Last year, I had won the Delhi Marathon. I believe that India is a place to chase dreams,' Cheptegei said.
The elite women's run, which did not have a pacemaker, was dominated by Sarah Chelangat. Sarah, who holds the Ugandan national 10,000m record, pulled ahead of the field to gain an eleven second lead at the 4km milestone.
Sarah went on to widen the gap, and by the final stretch, she had no company. The 23-year-old finished nearly a full minute ahead of her nearest rival, Cintia Chepngeno.
Sarah (31:07s) could not come close to the course record, set by Irene Cheptai (30:35s) in 2022.
A soft spoken Sarah explained her simple, effective race strategy. 'When we were running, I felt the pace was a bit slow. I thought - 'why don't I push and try to finish in the first position',' Sarah said.
Sarah added that course record could have come under threat had there been a pacemaker.
Cheptegei and Sarah won USD 26,000 each.
It was a memorable morning for Abhishek Pal (29:12s), who erased the Indian course record held by Kiran Matre (29:32s). The 2023 Asian Athletics Championships 10,000m bronze medallist finished a creditable seventh overall, ahead of four international elite athletes.
Sanjivani Jadhav wore the Indian elite women crown for a fourth time in a row. Sanjivani's timing of 34:16s did not match her own Indian course record of 33:38s set in 2018.
The win capped a fine week for Sanjivani, who claimed the 5,000m and 10,000m golds in the recent Federation Cup.
Abhishek and Sanjivani took home INR 3,00,000 each, while Abhishek won an additional INR 1,00,000 for setting a new Indian course record.

Read More India A vs England Lions Live Score, 2nd Unofficial Test: KL Rahul will turn out for India 'A' in their second red-ball game against England Lions, starting in Northampton on June 6. KL Rahul had travelled to England ahead of the main Indian squad to acclimatise to the conditions before the five-Test series. KL Rahul had requested the BCCI to allow him to participate in the second India A game against England Lions. It's not the first time that Rahul, now the side's senior most batter with 58 caps, after the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, will be turning out for India 'A' ahead of an important overseas Test tour. Last year, shortly after India lost the third Test to New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and suffered an unprecedented 3-0 series defeat at home, Rahul and wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel flew to Melbourne to turn out for India 'A' in their red-ball game against Australia 'A' at the MCG ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. With Rahul having scored two centuries as an opener on Test tours of England, his experience at the top will be very vital for India to navigate the challenge of facing the moving ball in the initial stage of an innings and then set a total to challenge the ultra-attacking batting style of the Ben Stokes-led side. RCB's parent company Diageo continues to maintain silence on Bengaluru stampede

New Delhi: It's been close to 48 hours since 11 lives were lost and 75 were injured due to the on June 4, hours after they ended their title wait. The celebrations in and around the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru turned out to be a big fat mess and many innocent lives were lost due the chaos. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The franchise has copped plenty of criticism but it has come as a surprise that its parent company - Diageo - a British multinational alcoholic company, continues to maintain silence over the matter. There have been a couple of statements by the RCB but not a single word from Diageo yet. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. reached out to the company last night with a very specific set of questions - reaction to the Bengaluru stampede, reason for the company's silence, whether they were satisfied with the arrangements made by the RCB and whether it mars the end of 18-year-long wait for a title - but there has been no response yet. The story will be updated the moment they share a response. Gautam Gambhir sends stern message after Bengaluru tragedy The Bengaluru Police have already swung into action and have arrested RCB's marketing head earlier on Friday morning. Apart from Sosale, three employees of DNA Entertainment Networks were also arrested. The police, in the FIR, have claimed that they denied RCB the permission to conduct the parade at the Chinnaswamy. Further investigation and rounds of questioning will reveal what actually transpired on June 4. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to maintain that the event was organised by the RCB and they had no role to play in it. IPL Governing Council Chairman Arun Dhamal has asserted that he alerted the RCB officials when things went out of control outside the cricket ground. Meanwhile, the event inside continued even when chaos prevailed. During a press conference on June 5, India head coach Gautam Gambhir minced no words on the tragedy in Bengaluru. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Scene outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru where a stampede occurred on June 4. 'I was never a believer that we need to have roadshows. Never. When I was playing, I had the same statement even after winning the 2007 (T20 World Cup)… The lives of people are far more important and I will continue to say that,' Gambhir said ahead of the team's departure for England. 'What has happened is very tragic. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones,' he said. 'I hope in the future nothing like this happens because I think we all are responsible citizens. We should take care of all this,' Gambhir added. It now remains to be seen what transpires next because what happened in Bengaluru has not pleased the top brass of the Indian cricket board too.
