Dubai Health celebrates International Nurses Day and honors DAISY Award Winners in Ceremony attended by Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri
Over 1,500 nurses from Dubai Health hospitals and centers attended the event
Dubai, UAE – Dubai Health marked International Nurses Day by hosting a ceremony honoring its 4,400-strong nursing team, including 12 recipients of the international DAISY Award for clinical excellence and compassionate care. The event, held at the Grand Hyatt Dubai, welcomed more than 1,500 nurses from across Dubai Health's hospitals and centers.
The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai, who joined Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health; Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU); and Dr. Tarek Fathey, Chief Clinical Officer at Dubai Health.
The event also featured a special recognition to GDRFA Dubai for its achievement in receiving the Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart Government Flag, attended by Major General Talal Al Shanqeeti, Assistant Director-General for the Airports Sector. Dubai Health commended Lieutenant General Mohammed Al Marri and the GDRFA Dubai team for their people-first approach and alignment with the UAE leadership's vision.
Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health, said: 'We are grateful for the incredible contributions of our nurses, and to celebrate the DAISY Award winners who exemplify both clinical and human excellence. At Dubai Health, we remain committed to supporting and empowering our nursing teams, who are essential in delivering our 'Patient First' approach.'
He added: 'I extend my sincere thanks to Lieutenant General Mohammed Al Marri for joining us in recognizing our nursing community and congratulate him and the GDRFA Dubai team on receiving the Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart Government Flag. Our shared focus on serving people continues to drive collective progress toward excellence and improved quality of life in Dubai.'
Dr. Sharif also welcomed the 16 graduate nurses who have transitioned to clinical practice at Dubai Health, reinforcing the organization's ongoing investment in healthcare talent.
He concluded: 'We are also proud of the recent naming of the Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery at MBRU by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This recognition inspires us to continue strengthening national capacity and elevating this vital profession.'
Dr. Tarek Fathy, Chief Clinical Officer at Dubai Health, said: 'Our nursing team continues to grow in strength and diversity, with more than 4,400 nurses now serving across our facilities. This year, 16 newly graduated Emirati nurses will begin their careers across Dubai Health's hospitals and centers, joining 120 Emiratis across the system. The number of Emirati nurses has increased by 200% since 2022, reflecting our commitment to developing national talent while delivering high-quality patient care.'
He noted that more than 1,500 Dubai Health nurses were nominated for the DAISY Award this year, which honors nurses who demonstrate exceptional clinical expertise and a commitment to patient-centered care. In addition, 26 nursing educators were recognized for their role in advancing clinical excellence and supporting workforce development

UAE floating hospital brings Eid joy to Gaza patients
The UAE floating hospital in the Egyptian city of Al Arish held an event for children and patients from Gaza to mark Eid Al Adha, offering a moment of relief and celebration amid the trauma of war. Organised by medical staff, volunteers and support teams, the event featured face painting, games and the distribution of Eid gifts to patients and their families. The initiative aimed to provide psychological support, rehabilitative therapy and lift the spirits of those receiving care aboard the hospital vessel. 'The initiative is a testament to the hospital's humanitarian message to boost morality and happiness for patients and their families onboard of the vessel,' said Dr Omran Mohammed Alefari, director of the UAE floating hospital. 'It is important to provide a comprehensive medical and supportive environment for the patients, especially in such days.' The 100-bed floating hospital set sail from the UAE in February last year and docked in Al Arish port in Egypt as part of Operation Gallant Knight 3. Docked at the Egyptian port of Al Arish, it receives patients through the Rafah border crossing and is part of the broader humanitarian effort ordered by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed - serving as a lifeline for Palestinians affected by the conflict. Its humanitarian efforts are part of the UAE's mission to ease the suffering of the injured and sick amid the dire circumstances faced by Palestinians in Gaza. The hospital has provided medical services to thousands of patients since the launch of its services for Palestinian people. It has also performed more than 3,600 surgical procedures across specialities, provided physical therapy services to approximately 9,500 cases and fitted 23 prosthetic limbs for patients. The hospital was established by the UAE's Ministry of Defence, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Ports Authority group, and includes about 100 medical and administrative staff specialising in anaesthesia, general surgery, orthopaedics and emergency services.

Meet UAE's first Emirati female specialist in addiction treatment psychology
Ayesha Ameri has made history as the first Emirati woman to be officially recognised as a specialist in addiction treatment psychology. At just 30 years old, Aisha has dedicated the past nine years to her role at Erada Centre for Treatment and Rehabilitation, where she currently heads the psycho-social section in the rehabilitation department. Ayesha's passion for psychology began in high school, where she discovered her natural inclination for humanitarian work. "Volunteering and listening to others came naturally, which made psychology an easy choice," she told Khaleej Times. With a supportive family who believed in the power of therapy, she felt encouraged every step of the way. However, she initially hesitated to pursue addiction treatment due to the stigma associated with it. 'But meeting my first patient changed everything,' she recalled. 'I quickly realised how misunderstood people with addiction are, and I knew I had found my purpose.' This transformative experience drove her to specialise further, and Ayesha pursued a master's degree in Addiction Science. Completing her studies at Dubai Medical College significantly shaped her understanding of addiction as a complex bio-psycho-social disorder. 'The programme gave me a deeper, holistic understanding of addiction,' she explained, noting how her thesis sharpened her research skills and provided an evidence-based perspective that now informs her daily practice. Personal approach Ayesha's approach to treating addiction, clinically referred to as substance use disorder, is grounded in a personalised, evidence-based method. She centres her treatment around Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which she finds most effective for addressing the psychological, social, and behavioural roots of addiction. 'Addiction is a complex disorder, and treatment needs to target all these aspects,' she said. Ayesha's triad CBT-based method, used in both group and individual settings, is unique in its adaptability. By incorporating regular screening tools, she can track each patient's progress and adjust the treatment to suit their specific challenges and strengths. Ayesha also believes that tackling the stigma surrounding addiction in Emirati society is crucial for progress. 'Addiction is a brain-based medical condition, not just a lack of willpower,' she emphasised. She advocates for raising awareness through schools, media, and healthcare campaigns, stressing the importance of a collective effort to change public perceptions. Support system in recovery In addition to medical treatment, Ayesha believes that family and community support play a pivotal role in the recovery process. 'It's important for families to understand that addiction is a disease, and recovery is not a linear journey,' she said. Ayesha encourages families to prepare for the challenges of recovery, advising them to maintain healthy boundaries while respecting the patient's confidentiality. 'Recovery works best when there is trust between the patient and therapist—and that trust can only grow when families support the process without being overly intertwined,' she noted. For young Emirati women aspiring to follow in her footsteps, Ayesha has a powerful message: 'The sky is the limit. There's a real need for more specialists in this field, whether in psychiatry, nursing, medicine, or mental health.' She credits the strong support she received throughout her career and is dedicated to offering that same encouragement to others who are eager to enter the field. Moreover, Ayesha underscores the importance of having more women represented in the field of addiction treatment psychology, particularly in the UAE. 'The UAE has been a strong advocate for women's empowerment, and I'm hopeful to see more women enter the field of addiction psychology,' she remarked. As the first licensed addiction psychologist in the UAE, Ayesha recognises the responsibility that comes with her role. 'For me, it's not just about breaking ground; it's about paving the way for others to follow.' In addition to her clinical work, Ayesha is involved in transformative projects at the Erada Centre aimed at addressing substance use disorder on a larger scale. 'We are collaborating with many different entities with the goal of 'not working in silos,'' she explained, feeling privileged to play a part in these ongoing and upcoming initiatives. Despite the emotional and mental demands of her work, Ayesha has learned to manage these challenges effectively. 'In the beginning, balancing the emotional demands of the work with everyday life was incredibly challenging,' she admitted. However, with experience, she has developed the ability to offer full empathy during sessions while maintaining her own mental space outside of work. Regular supervision with experienced professionals has been essential in helping her stay grounded, ensuring she provides the best care for her patients.
