Kim keeps LPGA lead but Grant and Korda lurk

Yahoo31-01-2025

South Korea's Kim A-lim heads into the weekend at the LPGA's season-opening Tournament of Champions in Orlando with a three stroke lead after shooting a 3-under par second round 69 on Friday.
After her bogey free opening round 7-under, Kim had to deal with three bogeys in her second round but remained comfortably clear of Sweden's Linn Grant.
The 29-year-old Kim, the 2020 US Women's Open winner, said conditions had changed from Thursday's play.
"It was still good but different, the wind was in a different direction, but it was still fun." she told reporters after her round left her 10-under for the tournament.
Grant put herself in contention with a 5-under 67 helped by an eagle on the par-5 ninth -- her final hole.
"Very solid today. I feel like yesterday I didn't have a tough time on the first nine but it's always kind of odd to come into the first tournament when you're not playing tournament golf for a while," said the 25-year-old, whose only win on the LPGA Tour came at the Dana Open in 2023.
"I found something on the back nine that I really liked and just tried to keep that with me today. I know I play my best golf when I keep it simple and not be too aggressive and let the putts do the job for me."
While Grant has just one win on the LPGA circuit, she has six victories on the Ladies European Tour and had top-10 finishes last year in the Women's British Open and the Women's PGA Championship.
American Nelly Korda, who dominated last year's tour with seven wins, is well poised for the weekend, sharing third after a 67 put her within four shots of Kim.
Ireland's Leona Maguire and Japan's Rio Takeda were also on 6-under for the tournament.

Stark leads by one going into US Women's Open final round

Stark birdied three holes on her penultimate round before finishing on seven under after a single bogey. The 25-year-old is chasing her second victory on the LPGA Tour, having won the 2022 ISPS Handa World Invitational. "[I am] probably going to go work out in the morning to try to get some nerves out, but I think just keep having fun with it because when I play scared, that's when I mess up, and you can't really play scared at a course like this," Stark said. The pair will be last out to start their final round, at 19:10 BST on Sunday. Japanese trio Mao Saigo, Hinako Shibuno and Rio Takeda are all tied on five under in third place. Successive bogeys hampered overnight leader Saigo's pursuit of a second consecutive major title to finish with a three-over 75, while world number one Nelly Korda remains in contention and trails Stark by three after making three birdies in her final five holes. "The first thing is that I would like to rest well and then tomorrow refreshed," Saigo, who won this season's Chevron Championship, said. Advertisement "I would like to start from zero. That result was not that good, but I don't think that I have to change anything. I just want to focus on my play."

Aussie Davidson in the hunt at LPGA Classic

Australia's Karis Davidson is two shots off the lead after three rounds of the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan. But the 26-year-old will be chasing six players on Sunday with fellow Aussies Grace Kim and Minjee Lee a further two shots back. Sentimental favourite Lexi Thompson birdied two of the final three holes for a share of the third-round lead on Saturday in a bid to win for the first time in just over six years. Thompson sits atop the leader board alongside five others, after shooting a 4-under 68, rebounding with birdies on 16 and 18 after driving into the water and making a bogey on the par-5 14th. "Not my best ball-striking day," Thompson said." But I scrambled very well and stayed positive, patient, and that's what it's kind of all about." At 11-under 205 at the Blythefield County Club, she was tied with Nanna Koerstz Madsen (68), Madelene Sagstrom (67), Sofia Garcia (68), Hye-Jin Choi (69) and Carlota Ciganda (69). Davidson finished the day in seventh on 207 with Lee and Kim tied for 12th on 209. Thompson was back on top a year after losing a playoff to Lilia Vu on the tree-lined course. "Everybody is going to come out swinging," she said. "Good weather tomorrow, so I know birdies will have to be made and I'll have to go pin-seeking. I will hope for the best, go out there and embrace the opportunity, and really love on the fans." Karis Davidson with a clutch birdie to kick off our moving day coverage 🐦We're live now on @GolfChannel — LPGA (@LPGA) June 14, 2025 The 30-year-old from Florida won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in early June 2019 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. She's making her sixth start of the season in a part-time tour schedule, and also is set to play next week in the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas. Garcia had the lead at 13 under after 12 holes, then bogeyed the next three. "I'm happy I was able to get it back together," Garcia said. "Made a really good chip out on 16. Was able to have a good finish."
