BCC discusses action against Tilakwadi Club and Vega Funmobile

Time of India4 hours ago

Belagavi: Heated discussions marked the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) council meeting on Tuesday, as several corporators accused BCC officials — including the law officer — of indirectly helping the management of Tilakwadi Club, which is under fire for violating lease terms.
Deputy commissioner (Revenue) Reshma Talikoti, informed the council that the club breached lease conditions by operating a bar, restaurant, and other commercial activities, which were not permitted. As a result, the commissioner's court ordered the cancellation of the lease in May. A caveat related to the case was also filed in court.
Talikoti explained that as per the Karnataka Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, three notices must be served before initiating eviction proceedings.
The first notice period expired on June 13, and subsequent notices will follow. However, the club management obtained a court stay against the show-cause notice, temporarily halting the eviction.
Corporators advocate Hanumant Kongali and Ramesh Sontakki criticised officials for failing to file a caveat before serving the show-cause notice. "At a crucial stage in the process, the officials helped the club management by issuing a notice without filing a caveat, allowing them to easily obtain a stay," alleged Kongali.

The law officer defended the move, stating that efforts are underway to vacate the stay in upcoming hearings.
Vega Funmobile faces eviction
In another key issue, ruling BJP members demanded action against Vega Funmobile Pvt Ltd for allegedly evading property tax amounting to Rs 7.3 crore.
Deputy commissioner Reshma Talikoti confirmed that two notices were already served — the first with a one-month deadline and the second with a one-week notice, ending on June 18.
A final 24-hour notice will be issued on Wednesday, following which seizure proceedings will be initiated.
Belagavi (North) MLA Asif Sait suggested exploring a one-time settlement with the company, but officials responded that such an option was no longer available under current rules.

AP to unveil new circular economy policy

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh is poised to significantly enhance its waste management and resource utilisation efforts with the imminent announcement of a new circular economy policy. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday directed officials to finalise the policy within two months and announced plans to establish three circular economy parks across the state within a year. During a review meeting at the Secretariat focused on circular economy strategies, Naidu emphasised the importance of creating wealth from waste and maximising resource reuse. He instructed officials to expedite the clearance of legacy waste and called for increased deployment of modern machinery in waste-to-energy plants. An action plan for waste segregation and recycling is also expected within 90 days. The Chief Minister also reviewed proposals from the Material Recycling Association of India for the circular economy parks. In the initial phase, a 400-acre park, designed to international standards, will be set up in Visakhapatnam. Naidu advised studying similar facilities globally to attract substantial investments. Naidu directed the officials to develop a comprehensive plan focusing on 11 sectors identified by the Central government for circular economy implementation: municipal waste, vehicles, lithium batteries, gypsum, tyres, rubber, electronics, agriculture, industry, and aqua waste. He also mandated the inclusion of the mining, handlooms, and animal husbandry departments, stressing that urban and rural local bodies should aim for zero waste. The Chief Minister also announced a ban on single-use plastics in four key cities of Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati and Rajamahendravaram along with 17 other municipal corporations from October 2. Naidu called for the increased use of cloth bags in these places and directed officials to establish 157 reduce-reuse-recycle centres across 87 urban locations. Officials briefed the Chief Minister on the current waste landscape, noting that 52 waste clusters have been established statewide, with two in each district covering urban and panchayat areas. Annually, Andhra Pradesh generates significant volumes of waste, including 36,588 tonnes of battery and automotive waste, 61,996 tonnes of plastic and PET bottle waste, and over 4 million metric tonnes of agricultural waste. According to officials, the state stands to gain substantially from the circular economy model. They estimate it could boost the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) by approximately Rs 15,000 crore annually and provide materials worth Rs 10,000 crore to the manufacturing sector. This value addition is projected to generate Rs 3,000 crore annually in GST revenue. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to create 100,000 direct jobs, support 10,000 micro-entrepreneurs, and indirectly provide livelihoods to over one million individuals. Environmental benefits include reduced carbon emissions and significant control over land, water, and air pollution.

Rain, rallies & rhetoric mark final day

Kozhikode: The three-week campaign for the high-stakes Nilambur bypoll — whose timing before the local body polls and 2026 assembly election gave it significant political importance — came to an end on Monday. Despite heavy rain in Nilambur town, major political parties undertook a high-octane kottikalasham (festive closing ceremony), turning it into a vibrant show of strength. UDF's Aryadan Shoukath, LDF's M Swaraj and NDA's Mohan George held impressive roadshows, arriving at their designated spots in town with flags, drums, DJ music and campaign songs that added colour to the event. Independent candidate PV Anvar, who triggered the bypoll by resigning his MLA post, skipped the grand finale and focused on grassroots outreach in Amarambalam panchayat. While UDF framed the bypoll as a semi-final before assembly elections and a 'public trial' of the Pinarayi Vijayan govt's nine years of alleged misrule, LDF pitched it as a vote to continue the govt's development and welfare initiatives. Factors that made the bypoll an intense contest included the 'do-or-die' campaign by Congress and IUML in Nilambur, the energizing of Left cadres after CPM state secretariat member M Swaraj was fielded to retain the seat and the dramatic entry of Anvar as an independent candidate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologist: Just Add 1 Drop Of This Household Item To Any Dark Spot And Wait 3 Minutes Undo BJP, initially lukewarm in its approach, ramped up its campaign in recent days focusing on Christian voters with George as its candidate and positioning itself as a development alternative. Anvar is running a silent campaign (except for his roadshow led by TMC MP Yusuf Pathan on Monday) seeking votes against 'Pinarayism' and the political nexus he claims includes opposition leader VD Satheesan. The final day of the campaign saw high-voltage rallies. Swaraj began his roadshow from Vazhikkadavu at 9am and reached Nilambur by 3:30pm. He told supporters that although the opposition tried to rake up controversies and sow seeds of division and hatred, LDF stayed focused on development and solving people's issues. Shoukath also led a roadshow from Vazhikkadavu in an open vehicle accompanied by leaders, including Vadakara MP Shafi Parambil and many supporters on two-wheelers. He urged people to turn the bypoll into a strong verdict against nine years of neglect in Nilambur and Kerala. Around 4:30pm, Shoukath and Swaraj stood in the rain and addressed their supporters. George, who also held a roadshow, said many voters want change, with support crossing traditional party lines in his favour. Over 2.3 lakh voters are expected to vote on June 19 in the bypoll.

SC denies anticipatory bail in 'Donkey Route' immigration scam

New Delhi, June 17 (UNI) The Supreme Court has declined to grant anticipatory bail to a Haryana man accused of orchestrating an illegal immigration racket through the notorious 'donkey route,' expressing strong disapproval over such activities that, according to the Court, tarnish the reputation of Indian passports globally. A vacation bench comprising Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan, while rejecting the plea filed by Om Prakash, observed on Monday (June 16), 'Because of people like you, the value of the Indian passport is diminished.' The bench noted that the charges against the petitioner involved grave allegations of human smuggling and fraud. The 'donkey route' is a term commonly used to describe illicit migration pathways involving multiple border crossings via human traffickers. Individuals attempting to reach countries like the United States and the United Kingdom often endure perilous journeys through forests, deserts, and detention zones, bypassing formal immigration procedures. The Court took note of the prosecution's claims that Om Prakash conspired with the main accused to cheat the complainant under the pretext of facilitating legal migration to the United States in exchange for Rs 43 lakh. Instead, the victim was sent through a harrowing sequence of countries starting in Dubai, moving across Central America, and eventually into Mexico, before being forced to cross the U.S. border illegally via the dangerous terrain of Panama's jungles. The complainant was arrested by US authorities on February 1, 2025, detained, and deported back to India on February 16, 2025. The Supreme Court also referred to the findings of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had earlier dismissed the bail application. The High Court had noted that the victim's father had specifically accused Om Prakash of defrauding him of Rs 22 lakh, and identified him as a close aide of the main accused operating the trafficking ring. Terming the allegations as 'very serious' and reflective of a broader issue affecting national credibility, the top court refused to interfere with the High Court's findings and dismissed the anticipatory bail petition.
