' refusal to cut pump prices, even as international fuel prices have fallen sharply.
Crude prices are down 20% year-on-year, petrol by 14% and diesel by 17%, yet domestic pump prices remain frozen. This has resulted in windfall margins for both state-run and private-sector fuel retailers.
Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy are using these margins to undercut state-run firms by up to ₹3 per litre, steadily eroding their market share in the retail petrol and diesel business, according to industry executives. In April-May, the private sector's share of diesel sales increased to 11.5% from 9.6% a year earlier. In petrol, the share increased to 10% from 9%.
At the same time, in the bulk diesel business, state-run and private suppliers were locked in a fierce battle, offering fuel at steep discounts to retail prices-highlighting just how much room there is to cut prices in a truly competitive market, according to executives. State-run Indian Oil Corporation regained significant share from private players in the bulk diesel segment during April-May.
State-run firms are reluctant to reduce pump prices, multiple executives said, as they want to use the expanded margins from petrol and diesel to offset losses incurred on LPG sales to households. The government regulates LPG prices and is expected to compensate state-run firms for losses when the fuel is sold below market rates. However, in 2024-25, Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum, and Bharat Petroleum suffered a combined loss of ₹41,266 crore on LPG sales and received no compensation. Private fuel retailers, by contrast, do not bear such LPG-related losses.

A day after one of India's deadliest aviation disasters, authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the crash of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad that left 241 of the 242 people onboard dead. The London-bound Boeing 787 went down just minutes after takeoff on Thursday, crashing into a densely populated residential area and sparking a massive fire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hails from Gujarat, visited the crash site on Friday as officials confirmed that most of the victims' bodies were charred beyond recognition. The aircraft struck a building housing a medical college hostel, killing several students on the ground. As of early Friday, there was no official word on what caused the crash. Investigators were still scouring the debris for the flight data and cockpit voice recorders, commonly referred to as black boxes, that could provide vital clues. Plumes of black smoke continued to rise from the Meghani Nagar neighbourhood near the Ahmedabad airport, where the crash occurred. The city, home to over 5 million people, is the largest in Gujarat and a key urban hub. The government has confirmed that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the probe in accordance with international aviation protocols. PSU OMCs slide as crude oil boils
Shares of three state-run oil marketing companies fell 1.2% to 2.6% after Brent crude prices flared up following an Israeli airstrike on Iran that sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East. In commodities, Brent crude (August 2025 contract) soared $5.59, or 8.06%, to $74.95 per barrel amid heightened geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 index was down 203.45 points, or 0.82% at 24,685.25. BPCL (down 2.59%), HPCL (down 2.24%) and Indian Oil Corporation (down 1.2%) edged lower. The heightened geopolitical unrest has sparked fears of potential disruptions to global oil supplies, especially through key transit points like the Strait of Hormuz. Higher crude oil prices could increase under-recoveries of PSU OMCs on domestic sale of LPG and kerosene at controlled prices. The government has freed pricing of petrol and diesel.
