Gone but not forgotten: Blogger's photos preserve Bongawan's lost heritage

KIMANIS: A travel content creator never imagined that his personal documentation of the nearly century-old shophouses in Bongawan, near here, would one day become a valuable keepsake.
Sixteen years ago, Murphy Ng took photographs and wrote a blog post about the small town located about 70km from the Sabah capital.
"I wasn't aware of this building until my Bongawan friend showed it to me in 2009. I was really impressed by this piece of heritage in a rustic town.
"The buildings were in good shape back then.
"We toured around, took some photos, and mingled with the friendly locals.
"One of them even showed me inside the shoplots.
"Everything - the windows, the well, the toilet, and the cold coffee in a bottle - brought back memories, as it looked exactly like my late grandparents' old house in Tamparuli.
"I wished these could be preserved, but in my heart, I knew they wouldn't last forever," he told the New Straits Times, adding that at the time, he had hoped the government would step in to conserve them.
Despite one of the buildings bearing the inscription "1939," Ng was informed by a local elder that the 10-unit structure was a blend of shophouses built in 1922 and 1939, later joined together.
Yesterday morning, a fire razed three rows of the two-storey wooden shophouses and ten cars.
However, no casualties were reported.
"I was really upset when I found out that all the old shoplots were gone.
"We didn't just lose a valuable legacy; we lost the memories and nostalgic feelings tied to them.
"They're gone forever, and money can't bring them back.
"I'm really glad I wrote about it. Though the buildings are gone, at least we still have the photographs."
His new Facebook post featuring old pictures of the shoplots has since gone viral following the fire.
Earlier, Membakut assemblyman Datuk Mohd Ariffin Mohd Arif and former Kimanis member of parliament Tan Sri Anifah Aman visited the affected property owners.
Mohd Ariffin, who is also the Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, said he would raise the matter at the next cabinet meeting to seek assistance for those affected.
Meanwhile, the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Perak's stray dog management to go ‘smart'

Better chance at life: Ng (second from left) looking at dogs recovering from spaying during the launch of the Perak Pawsitive Initiative for the Teja constituency, in Gopeng. — RONNIE CHIN/The Star GOPENG: Perak is finalising two key initiatives to tackle the rising number of stray animals, namely the introduction of microchips for dog licensing, as well as feeder mapping to manage the location of animal feeders. State housing and local government committee chairman Sandrea Ng said the first initiative is a proposal to make it compulsory for dogs to be microchipped to increase traceability of pet ownership. 'This move aims to introduce a more transparent and responsible pet ownership system. With microchipping, authorities will be able to trace the owner's identity, and the animal's vaccination records and neutering history. 'This would allow dogs to be identified and reunited with owners in the event of disturbances, loss or complaints. It is also expected to reduce cases of owners abandoning their dogs, an act which burdens the community and state resources,' she said after launching the Perak Pawsitive Initiative for the Teja constituency here yesterday. Ng said the feeder mapping system aims to recognise and regulate those who voluntarily feed stray animals. She said many feeders have been operating independently for years, often without proper coordination. 'In some cases, feeding areas have led to public complaints due to disturbances, hygiene issues or increasing numbers of strays. 'Through this initiative, feeders will be encouraged to register with the cooperation of local authorities and animal welfare NGOs. 'This will help ensure that feeding areas are monitored, dogs in those zones are neutered and cleanliness is maintained,' she said, adding that a basic digital platform will be developed to map feeding hotspots, allowing complaints to be addressed more effectively, aid to be channelled accurately and intervention strategies to be planned in advance. 'This is not just a technical effort but also an acknowledgement of the community's role and effort as part of the state's goal of transforming into a smart city,' she said. Ng added that the government is studying aspects such as cost implications, record management systems and enforcement methods. 'We will finalise it by the end of the year. The priority is to develop a fair, efficient and enforceable framework for long-term use,' she said.

TYT pays tribute to fathers' sacrifices in Father's Day message

Father's Day greetings from Wan Junaidi and Fauziah posted on the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's official Facebook page. KUCHING (June 14): Sarawak's Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, in his Father's Day message, called on all Sarawakians not to forget the services and sacrifices of their fathers. 'Father's Day, which is also celebrated in Malaysia including Sarawak, is an opportunity for us to appreciate and recognises the important role played by fathers in shaping families and society. A father is not just a breadwinner, but also a protector, guide, shaper of values and morals, and a source of inspiration and the main role-model for the formation of character, spirit and the attitude of their children,' he said. He pointed out that fathers shoulder a heavy responsibility as the head of the family, ensuring the well-being, safety, and future of their children are always protected. 'Appreciate them as long as they are alive, express your appreciation, and continue the legacy of noble values that have been instilled by them. To those who have lost their fathers, send prayers to them and give alms as a sign of our lasting love,' he said. Although a father's love is rarely expressed verbally, Wan Junaidi said every drop of sweat and every effort made is proof of their endless love for the well-being of the family. He also said behind every successful family, stands a father who fights tirelessly – both in the countryside and in the city, from various backgrounds and occupations. 'Fathers teach us about responsibility, patience, perseverance and strength. His advice becomes a guide for life, while his firmness shapes our personality and resilience in facing challenges. Therefore, on this special day, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi and I record our highest appreciation and gratitude to all fathers for all the services and sacrifices they make without expecting anything in return,' he said. Runaway cows spark viral TikTok video — stir up plenty of laughs and farm tales

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — A man was tearfully reunited with his two missing cows after a four-hour search, as shown in a viral TikTok by @hazriqspark86. The user said his father had been too distraught to eat, riding alone on his motorcycle to find them, the New Straits Times reported. 'He couldn't even eat, he cried during mealtimes thinking about the cows,' the son was quoted as saying. The family later received a tip that the runaways had been spotted near a bund. Not long after, they were told the surau chairman had found and secured them at the mosque. During the reunion, one of the cows, which the family said is tame, was seen licking the original poster's younger brother's head. He expressed gratitude to everyone who helped in the search and confirmed the bovine duo are now safely back home. The post has since gained over 57,000 likes, prompting others to share similar stories in the comments. One user said her father disappeared while looking for his cows — and was upset when the family searched for him instead of the animals.
