An 89-year-old Florida man and his pet dog were killed in a suspected bear mauling on Monday, May 5
The man has been identified as Robert Markel, according to local news outlets
A dead black bear has since been sent for testing amid what could be the first fatal mauling in Florida's history since records began
A man and his pet dog have been found dead after a suspected bear mauling that could mark the first fatal attack in Florida history.
At around 7:07 a.m. local time on Monday, May 5, the Collier County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to a call at a property in a remote part of Collier County near Everglades City, local outlets Fox 4 Now and Naples Daily News reported.
The daughter of Robert Markel informed officials that she witnessed a bear kill her father's dog. Investigators then found 89-year-old Markel's body "a couple hundred yards away," as they searched the area, according to the outlets.

FWC officials suspect that Markel — who lived alone on the property with his dog — may have been killed hours before they received the call.
'The bear involved may still be in the area as our officers continue to secure the perimeter,' said FWC Officer George Reynaud in a statement, per Fox 4 Now. 'Out of an abundance of caution, we urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant and avoid the area," he added.
Officials confirmed in a press conference that they were using drones and officers on the ground to search the area following the fatal attack, per KHOU 11.

They added that they are awaiting the results of DNA testing to confirm if a black bear caused Markel's death.
'We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Markel,' Reynaud said, per Fox 4 Now. 'At this time, we have deployed four live bear traps around the vicinity of where the incident occurred in an attempt to capture this bear," he added.

A cluster of loud pops was allegedly heard shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday, with wildlife officials hauling a dead bear from the woods moments later, according to Naples Daily News.
Officials confirmed to the outlet that the dead bear would be brought to Gainesville for testing.
If found responsible for Markel's death, it would be the first fatal bear attack in Florida since records began and the second bear mauling statewide this year, Naples Daily News and CBS Miami reported.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office and the FWC did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on May 6.

2 Men Charged in Death of 15-Year-Old Ballerina Who Was Hit by a Boat While Wakeboarding in Florida

After a "thorough investigation" into the May 2024 death of 15-year-old Ella Adler, two men have been charged by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Adler was fatally struck by a boat after falling while wakeboarding on May 11, 2024 Carlos Guillermo Alonso and Edmund Richard Hartley have been charged with multiple misdemeanors for their alleged involvement in the tragedyTwo men have been charged in the death of Ella Adler, a 15-year-old ballerina who was killed in a boating accident in May 2024. Adler was fatally struck by a boat after falling while wakeboarding on May 11 on a beach in Key Biscayne, Florida. In a statement shared on Instagram at the time, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) revealed that they were searching for the driver of the boat that allegedly hit Adler after it left the scene. Carlos Guillermo Alonso was later identified as the owner, according to an incident report reviewed by PEOPLE in May 2024. At the time, no charges had been handed down. After a "thorough investigation" conducted by the FWC, Alonso and Edmund Richard Hartley, who was driving the boat towing Adler, have both been charged with multiple misdemeanors, the FWC confirmed to PEOPLE. According to a FWC statement obtained by PEOPLE, Alonso was charged with Violation of U.S. Coast Guard Navigational Rule #2 – Responsibility and Violation of U.S. Coast Guard Navigational Rule #5 – Look-out. Hartley received four charges: Violation of U.S. Coast Guard Navigational Rule #2 – Responsibility, Violation of U.S. Coast Guard Navigational Rule #5 – Look-out, Violation of U.S. Coast Guard Navigational Rule #7 – Risk of Collision and Violation of U.S. Coast Guard Navigational Rule #8 – Action to Avoid Collision. They have both pleaded not guilty, according to the Associated Press. The charges were handed down in April 2025 and are all related to Careless Operation of a Vessel. "The FWC extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Ella Adler. Our thoughts remain with them as they continue to cope with this unimaginable loss," the organization said in the statement. Lauren Field Krasnoff, a lawyer representing Alonso, spoke out about the tragedy in May 2024, saying that he "had absolutely no idea" that he allegedly struck Adler and that he was "as devastated as anybody could be," per NBC 6. 'We are devastated for the Adlers, for their friends, their family, there's no question in our minds that this is a absolutely horrific thing that happened and we pray for and think of their family and friends during this time,' Krasnoff said. At the time, Krasnoff said that Alonso was working with the police on the investigation. 'He has had no contact with the criminal system. He does not drink, and he was not drinking on that Saturday,' she added. According to the incident report PEOPLE reviewed in 2024, Alonso was only on the boat with one other person at the time of the accident. It was not clear then if he was driving the vehicle. PEOPLE reached out to Krasnoff for additional comment on Wednesday, June 4. In her obituary, Adler was described as "a force of nature." "When she was near, everyone felt a gravitational pull toward her," the tribute read, adding that "she emanated love and joy." Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? She also danced in high school and had recently appeared in a school play. "She was loyal. She was compassionate. Florida bear attack victim dragged from ransacked camper in deadly mauling, 911 calls reveal

Editor's note: A previous version of this story indicated the wrong relationship between Sue Story and Robert Markel. When Sue Story found her grandfather's dog being mauled in her front yard and no sign of Robert Markel, she told authorities something was not right. According to an incident report from the Collier County Sheriff's Office, Story, 65, told authorities a bear killed the dog, but she could not find Markel, 89. Story told authorities that when she went to check Markel's camper, also on her property, he was not there. The last time she saw her grandfather was about 7:30 p.m. May 4, the night before. When she spoke with authorities, Story told them Markel's camper was "in disarray." When a responding sheriff's deputy checked the trailer, as described in the report, the mattress was off the bed and items were scattered throughout the trailer. The sheriff's deputy indicated he did not find blood in the trailer. Then, approximately 20 yards from the trailer, in nearby woods, he said authorities found a wallet, pants and a T-shirt that "appeared to be saturated in blood." When officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission arrived, they found Markel's body approximately 100 yards from the trailer. FWC announcement: FWC takes bears for DNA analysis after deadly attack kills man, dog in rural Collier County Dirt and leaves covered Markel's remains, the report states. Authorities said it is the first time in recorded Florida history a black bear has killed a human. During a May 6 press conference, authorities said officials were working to find the bear, with three already killed and taken to Gainesville for DNA analysis. Officials also said Markel and the dog were home alone during the incident and that Markel likely died two hours before the dog. Officers continue to set traps and search for bears. Authorities received two 911 calls as bystanders became aware of the canine's mauling. "He's already killed a dog," the first of two callers, identifying as a grandson of Markel and his father, reported, later adding that, "One of the bears is still here." The caller then warned the dispatcher he was venturing out to search for the bear. "I'm putting my clothes on and I'm taking my gun," the caller said. "I'm gonna go look for this bear." The caller said they did not know how long Markel has been gone. During a second call, which lasted 20 minutes, he said they saw a bear grab and maul the dog. The 911 dispatcher asked if Markel could have run away. "He's 89. He literally can't walk," the caller said. The caller said the bears frequent the area, grab the nearby trash and "all of the sudden decided to take him."
