It ticks the Brit crime boxes (bad weather, scarred detectives), but this drama is deeply haunting
The One That Got Away ★★★½
There must be times, one is sure, when the weather is fine in Great Britain. There have to be warm summer days occasionally – you see them on the cricket sometimes. But if you're a character in a British crime drama, you better wrap up warm because you'll wait a long time for the sun to shine.
When the subject is murder and our heroes are looking into the human heart's murkiest corners, grim skies will always loom overhead and there'll be an icy chill in the air, as Mother Nature does the right thing, by matching the atmosphere to the story. Which brings us to The One That Got Away and a small town in Wales, where horror lurks in the woods, the past lies in wait to devastate the present, and everything is, as always, cold, grey and foreboding.
There are two kinds of British murder mystery: the first, is where murder is a rather jolly puzzle to be solved, and the other is where murder is just one part of the crushing misery that suffuses all life. The One That Got Away is not, it quickly becomes apparent, jolly. It begins with a young nurse strangled in the woods and gets darker from there.
Called to the scene of the murder is DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington), a happily married father whose wholesome domestic bonhomie is only slightly bruised by his naturally stressful career. But this case is different. Not only is the victim a friend of his wife's, the killing bears haunting hallmarks of a case he worked on years ago, the so-called 'Heart Knot Murders'.
It's not just the atrocity that's confronting him, but the memories that come flooding in to shatter his emotional equilibrium. And it gets even more complex, as his superior calls in some outside help: DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys), the officer who worked that previous case with Rick, and was also his fiancee. This is, for more than one reason, going to be a tough job.
The two leads are wonderful in their portrayal of people bearing deep scars who suddenly find that their lengthy efforts to move on with their lives have been stymied by circumstance.
As Rick Sheldon, Harrington is an unlikely thriller hero: greying, bespectacled and careworn, he brings classic middle-class dad energy, as he faces the sickening realities of a brutal world. He is a portrait of a weary man doing his duty even as the overwhelming sadness of the world bears down on him like a load of stones on his chest.

BRIT Awards moving to Manchester in 2026 after almost 50 years in London
The BRIT Awards with Mastercard is moving from London to Manchester after almost 50 years. The prestigious music ceremony has been held in the British capital since 1977 and first took place at the Wembley Conference Centre, before relocating to various prestigious venues over the years, including the Royal Albert Hall and Hammersmith Apollo. In recent years it has been hosted at The O2 arena. However, on February 28, 2026, the BRITs will be staged at the Co-op Live in Manchester. Manchester has taken over as MediaCityUK in recent years with corporations like the BBC moving their operations from London to reduce costs and better represent audiences across the UK. The move to Manchester also excited fans of local legends Oasis, especially after frontman Liam Gallagher jokingly teased a big announcement at 6.30am on Monday (09.06.25) with many X users suggesting it could be related to the BRITs heading to the city. The BRIT Awards 2026 will take place on Saturday February 28, and be broadcast exclusively on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player. The bash will remain at Co-op Live until at least 2027. The move has been spearheaded by Sony Music UK. Jason Iley MBE, Chairman and CEO, Sony Music UK and Ireland said: 'This is a very exciting time for The BRIT Awards. Moving to Manchester, the home of some of the most iconic and defining artists of our lifetime, will invigorate the show and build on the BRITs legacy of celebrating and reinvesting in world-class music. Hosting the show in Manchester, with its vibrant cultural history, perfectly captures the spirit and energy of the BRIT Awards. I can't wait to see the show at the amazing state-of-the art Co-op Live venue.' Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester commented: "For The BRIT Awards to move out of London is a massive coup for Greater Manchester. After 48 years, it is great that this prestigious global event is about to arrive in the UK capital of music and culture. Greater Manchester has an unparalleled music heritage known around the world, and this summer will play host to some of the biggest gigs on the planet. That was only made possible by our strong commitment to new talent and giving emerging artists the opportunities to make their name. We thank our friends at the BPI for choosing Manchester and we will pull out all the stops to show they made the right decision. Celebrating the BRIT Awards right here in the home of 24 hour party people is the next chapter in its story and you can be sure that we will help them do it in style.' The 2025 ceremony featured performances from the past year's biggest stars, including Charli xcx and Sabrina Carpenter.

Israel orders Greta Thunberg and activists to watch October 7 Hamas atrocity footage after Gaza Flotilla detention
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has ordered that detained Gaza flotilla activists be shown a harrowing video compilation of the October 7 Hamas massacre. The British-flagged yacht Madleen, party of the 'Freedom Flotilla Coalition' was seized by Israel on Monday with a crew of 12 activists, including Greta Thunberg on board. The activists attempted to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip to deliver aid and attract attention to their cause. After Israeli Forces took command of the vessel, Mr Katz said the activists must see 'exactly who it is they are supporting'. 'It's appropriate that Greta the antisemite and her Hamas-supporting friends should see exactly who is the terror group Hamas,' he said in a statement. According to the Defence Minister's office, the activists will be shown a 43-minute video produced by the Israel Defence Forces, titled Bearing Witness. The video includes uncensored footage of Hamas' October 7 attack on southern Israel—much of it taken from the bodycams of the attackers themselves. The footage has been described as 'difficult to watch' and includes scenes of massacre, mutilation, and terror inflicted on Israeli civilians. The Freedom Flotilla activists were warned not to attempt to reach the Gaza Strip before their expedition was stopped. Activists, including Ms Thunberg and Yasmin Acar claimed to have been 'intercepted at sea and kidnapped' by Israel. The group lost contact late at night after reporting they were surrounded by drones and naval vessels.

The top 5 looks from the Tony Awards: Snook and Clooney win
Amal Clooney in Tamara Ralph With Snook championing a British designer, Australian creativity made an unexpected appearance at the Tony Awards on the slender frame of Amal Clooney. With husband George Clooney nominated for his performance in the play Good Night, and Good Luck (not his divisive hair dye for the role), barrister Amal wore a pearl-encrusted, fitted design by Australian designer Tamara Ralph. The former creative director of Ralph & Russo, worn by Meghan Markle, has found greater fame under her own name dressing Angelina Jolie and Blake Lively since parting ways with former partner Michael Russo. Sadie Sink in Prada Sensuous 1930s glamour was on many stars' mood boards this season, but few managed to embody the decade's silky grace as effectively as Stranger Things star Sadie Sink in Prada. The plunging neckline and embellished bow detail playfully combined maturity with hints of mischief. Cole Escola in Wiederhoeft Audiences of Escola's hit play Oh Mary!, focusing on the imagined cabaret aspirations of Mary Todd Lincoln, are familiar with the playwright and performer's unique humour. That humour was present in the best actor award winner's red carpet tribute to Broadway legend Bernadette Peters. Loading Escola's gown from Wiederhoeft was a tribute to the outfit Peters wore to collect her Tony for Annie Get Your Gun at the 1999 ceremony, although the update dispensed with medals across the bodice. 'We found ourselves inspired by additional themes of faded crypticism, false innocence, fightfulness, womanly age-hold historically feminine garments, queenly status and ancient doors,' Jackson Wiederhoeft says. While the dress was a nod to Peters, the hairy chest was all Escola.
