NWSL's Angel City wear ‘Immigrant City Football Club' shirts after Los Angeles raids
Angel City, Los Angeles' NWSL team, wore shirts that proclaimed themselves 'Immigrant City Football Club' before Saturday night's game against the North Carolina Courage.
The team also printed 10,000 t-shirts bearing the same message, with 'Los Angeles is for Everyone' on the back in English and Spanish, and gave them to fans at the game. The move was in solidarity with immigrants in the city who have been targeted by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Protests over Donald Trump's immigration policies broke out in Los Angeles a week ago. Members of the marines and national guard have been sent into the city and dozens of similar protests have broken out nationwide.
'Football, the game that we all love, we have it here because of immigrants,' said Angel City captain Ali Riley after the game, which her team lost 2-1. 'It's played the way it is because of immigrants. This club that is such a huge part of me wouldn't be here without immigrants.'
Singer Becky G, who is one of the club's founding investors alongside figures such as Natalie Portman and Serena Williams, also read a statement before the game. 'The fabric of this city is made of immigrants,' she said. 'Football does not exist without immigrants. This club does not exist without immigrants.'
Women's soccer players have a long history of speaking out on social and political issues. The US women's national team was at the forefront of campaigning for equal pay in soccer, while stars such as Megan Rapinoe have been critical of Trump's policies during his two terms as president.

Angel City is one of the most commercially successful women's football teams in the world. The club's average attendance this season is just over 17,000, the highest in the NWSL.

June 15 - Shane Baz pitched 6 2/3 effective innings and Jonathan Aranda hit a two-run double in the fifth inning after scoring the first run in a three-run second inning as the visiting Tampa Bay Rays continued their surge with a 9-0 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon. Baz (6-3) held the Mets to three hits during his second-longest start of the season and New York's top four hitters of Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso were a combined 1-of-9 against him. Baz threw a career-high 106 pitches, won his third straight decision and the Rays won with him on the mound for the fifth straight time. Baz struck out six and issued two of his four walks to Soto. Baz's biggest strikeout occurred when he got Alonso on a foul tip with the bases loaded to end the fourth and protect a 4-0 lead. After getting three hits in the opener on Friday, Aranda helped the Rays become the first team to sweep the Mets this season. Aranda opened the second by drawing a walk and scored the first run when Kameron Misner grounded out. Danny Jansen added an RBI single in the second when New York's Griffin Canning threw 33 pitches. Misner scored on a wild pitch to the backstop and Junior Caminero scored on a grounder in the fourth when Jake Magnum beat out a double play. The Rays knocked Canning out when Caminero walked with one out in the fifth, putting runners at second and third. Aranda followed by lining a 1-1 fastball from reliever Max Kranick down the right field line for a 6-0 lead. Caminero capped Tampa Bay's big day with a three-run homer in the ninth after also homering in Saturday's 8-4 win. The Rays won for the 18th time in 24 games, scored 24 runs in the series and drew a season-best nine walks. Canning (6-3) allowed six runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out two and issued five of New York's season-high nine walks. Astros rally in ninth, sweep Twins with walk-off in tenth
June 15 - Mauricio Dubon hit a walk-off single to left field with two outs in the 10th inning, and the Houston Astros completed a three-game series sweep of the Minnesota Twins with a 2-1 win on Sunday. Dubon drove home Jake Meyers with a high fly ball off Twins reliever Cole Sands (3-3) that left fielder Willi Castro failed to catch at the wall. Meyers opened the bottom of the 10th placed at second base, but had not moved up after a ground out and a strike out. The Astros rallied against Twins closer Jhoan Duran for a second consecutive game, pulling even in the ninth when Victor Caratini hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Jeremy Pena, who walked to lead off the frame. With one out, Pena stole second base and advanced to third on a Jose Altuve infield single. Josh Hader (4-0) earned the win for Houston with a perfect 10th. The Astros completed a six-game homestand at 5-1. Brooks Lee extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a solo home run for a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Lee finished 3-for-4 and homered for a second consecutive game. He owns the longest hit streak by a Twin since Carlos Correa produced a 16-game hitting streak last season. Lee, who belted his career-best seventh homer 374 feet to left, represented the lone blemish for Astros left-hander Brandon Walter, who excelled while making his third spot start for Houston. Walter retired the Twins in order in the second, fourth, and sixth innings and worked a career-best 6 2/3 innings. He worked around a two-out single from Castro in the first and stranded Correa and Castro by getting Ty France to fly out to right field in the third. Castro, who finished 3-for-4, struck out with Lee and Ryan Jeffers in scoring position to end the fifth. Walter sandwiched strikeouts of Harrison Bader and Christian Vazquez around a Lee single before departing in the seventh. He allowed six hits and did not walk a batter while recording a career-high nine strikeouts. Twins right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson logged five shutout innings. He needed only 26 pitches to complete one trip through the Houston order and retired the top of the Astros' lineup in order in the bottom of the fourth. Woods Richardson didn't throw more than 11 pitches in any frame before he surrendered an infield single to Meyers with one out in the fifth. Champions League winners Paris St Germain beat fellow European heavyweights Atlético Madrid 4-0 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday to get their Club World Cup campaign off to a winning start.
