406 new Upstate Medical University graduates
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Cheers and applause erupted Sunday as 406 new physicians, nurses, therapists, technicians and scientists received their degrees during Upstate Medical University's commencement ceremony.
Graduates from all four of Upstate's colleges — Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine and Nursing — were recognized.
The College of Graduate Studies awarded 23 degrees, including eight in biochemistry and one master's degree.
In addition, the College of Health Professions conferred 164 degrees: 53 Bachelor of Science, eight Bachelor of Professional Studies, 67 Master of Science and 36 Doctor of Physical Therapy. Programs in the college include behavior analysis, clinical perfusion, medical imaging and radiation sciences, medical technology, respiratory care, physical therapy, physician assistant studies and radiation therapy.
Among the graduates was Alaina Taylor, who completed the two-year radiation therapy program. While excited about her graduation, she's already focused on the next step.
'We have to take our boards for this program, so we all have those coming up,' Taylor said. 'Graduation is very exciting, but we also have the weight of that on our shoulders.'
After walking the stage, Taylor shared that she has accepted a position at Rochester Regional Health. As she begins her career in medicine, she reflected on the character and dedication required to succeed in health care.
'You have to have a passion for helping people,' she said. 'Everyone thinks that health care is what they want to get into — until they see what you actually have to do.'
As Taylor reflects on the dedication required to enter the health care field, the range of degrees awarded across Upstate's colleges underscores the diverse paths students take to serve in medicine.
The Norton College of Medicine awarded 172 degrees, including 156 Doctor of Medicine, 15 Master of Public Health and one public health certificate. Notably, three students earned dual M.D./M.P.H. degrees, while Akshay Patel and Adam Wegman completed both M.D. and Ph.D. programs.
The College of Nursing awarded 42 degrees and certificates: 19 Doctor of Nursing Practice, six Master of Science, 15 Bachelor of Science and two post-graduate certificates.
When asked if she had a message for her fellow graduates, Taylor kept it simple:
'Just congratulations,' she said. 'I know that everyone has worked really hard to be here. This school is not easy to get into, and it's not easy to complete.'

Postal employees awarded for saving woman who was being attacked by dog in Mount Oliver
Two postal service employees are being awarded for stepping up to help a woman they heard crying out for help as she was attacked by a dog. 74-year-old Janice Taylor is still dealing with the aftermath of a dog attack this past March in Mt. Oliver. 'I'm still going through hand surgery, rehab, therapy, hand therapy… trying to make my hand fold and go back the way it was," Taylor said. She still has bite marks on her arm, an injury to her face, and can't fully move her fingers. But her injuries could have been much worse — if it weren't for the two mail carriers who heard her screaming. Tony Kriley and Jamie Stevens were on their route, saw the attack happening, and then began spraying the dog with deterrent. Both mail carriers received the Postmaster General Hero Award for saving Taylor. During the award ceremony, dog trainers gave a demonstration of what to do during a dog attack. Taylor is forever grateful to her mail carriers for stepping in to save her life. 'I'm so glad the post officers were there, and that they saved me. I was having a hard time and I didn't think I would be here,' Taylor said. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

Detroit's WDIV meteorologist Kim Adams reveals she's dealing with 'serious health issues'
WDIV-TV meteorologist Kim Adams has revealed she is dealing with "serious health issues" in a statement that she shared on social media and the Local 4 News website. "In recent months, I have been dealing with some serious health issues that have caused me to seek care at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio," wrote Adams. "Because of my ongoing condition, I have had to be off the air for periods of time." Adams went on to indicate she went public with her health issues to thank viewers for "the outpouring of support" and concern. Although she didn't go into any specifics on her condition, she said she would do her best to provide updates. Adams, an Emmy-winning TV journalist, became the first woman to be an on-air meteorologist in Detroit TV news in 1997. After leaving WDIV in 2009, she returned to what is now called the 4WarnWeather team in 2022. The veteran meteorologist is a breast cancer survivor who works closely with New Day Foundation for Families to help cancer patients with their financial needs. 25 Affordable Target Skincare Products Worth Trying
A makeup-dissolving, dark spot-targeting cleanser that'll be as light as a cloud on your skin to start off your skincare routine. It uses niacinamide to make your skin look and feel smooth. Promising review: "I used the YTTP Superfoods Cleanser for years, but I grew tired of the $37 price tag. I tried this product on a whim, and I am SO glad I did. This product has truly changed my skin. The texture, clarity, and radiance of my skin has never been better. I ran out of it for about two weeks, and I could instantly tell my skin was missing it. Highly recommend, but be prepared to be hooked!" —destinytargetfindsPrice: $4.99+ (available in two sizes) An alcohol-free toner because it doubles as a facial spray to refresh your skin after practically melting during your coffee run. You can use this for more than just your face; it can be used post-shave, pre-makeup, and even on sunburns! I discovered this product while I was on a trip and forgot to pack a toner. I started using it, and it feels so nice and does not bother my sensitive skin (I have a lot of redness). Typically, toners make my skin redder, but not this BB. Promising review: "This is a go-to skincare and makeup product for me. I have sensitive and fairly dry skin, and because of this I can't use toners because they are too harsh and drying. But this facial mist is perfectly gentle on my skin. It balances my natural oils, and helps keep my skin clear. I even use it as a setting spray for my makeup. LOVE THIS PRODUCT. I'm not a person who loves the scent of rose either, but I bought the rose water for the benefits. Surprisingly the scent doesn't bother me, it's not a very strong floral smell. It doesn't smell like potpourri. Would definitely recommend!" —BabellePrice: $10.99 A CeraVe under-eye cream to help brighten your undereye after staying up past your bedtime waiting for the reputation (Taylor's version) announcement. Using a combo of peptides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and caffeine, this basically works like magic. Caffeine can brighten skin and temporarily minimize the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite, if that's something you're looking for in a product. Read more about the skincare benefits of caffeine at the Cleveland review: "I am in my mid-50s and I have been an avid Perricone MD user, but thought I would give this a try and I am very impressed with CeraVe!! I was paying $75 for .5oz. before eye cream, and this works better!! I'm sold!!" —StephPrice: $18.99 A hyaluronic acid serum, because it's lightweight and water-based, so it feels like it's ~actually~ working and not just chilling on the surface of your skin doing nothing. This serum uses two forms of molecular weight (hyaluronic acid) for penetrating several layers of your skin. Promising review: "I usually use a more expensive hyaluronic acid. I ran out and it was on back order. I figured for $6 I'd give this a go in the interim. Dang. This stuff is nice!! I've tried a lot of these serums and have struggled to find ones I like. They're usually sticky, expensive, don't spread well, etc. This one is a little sticky, but a little of it goes a long way and it's super hydrating. Honestly, if my usual one wasn't already in the mail, I'd cancel it and fully convert over to this one. I probably will after the bottle of the more expensive stuff runs out." —AshleyPrice: $5.99 A bottle of micellar water so easy to use for your routine: it can cleanse your face while also removing any waterproof makeup from your night out. The way this works is micelles basically trap and remove dirt, oil, and makeup from your skin. Promising reviews: "I don't usually post reviews, but this product NEEDS attention. I have extremely sensitive skin. I've tried cleansing balms and oils, and this is by far the best. I wear waterproof mascara, and this gets it off so easily without rubbing and irritating the skin around my eyes. One bottle lasts me forever (probably longer than you should use for shelf life). Also love that you don't have to rinse afterwards. Long day at work? Night out on the town? Don't need to wash your face after! Definitely worth the purchase, especially at the price." —MA"I've been using this for years and will not use anything else. It works great, very easy to remove makeup, even waterproof. It's comparable to Clinique Take The Day Off, but at a better price." —RMoPrice: $4.99+ (available in three sizes) A post-blemish recovery balm that'll make your skin bounce back a little quicker post break-out (not break-up). This helps your skin recover from a ton of things, including red spots, bumps, scaly patches, and dark marks. Promising review: "I don't know why or how, but Hero's products have worked like absolute magic for me. They're magical — that's all! Honestly, they make my inner teenager both super happy but jealous that I didn't have these products way back when. But, even as I'm in my late '20s, I still deal with hormonal breakouts. And all of Hero's products, especially this one, have been a skin-saver. I've had a few spots of very, very stubborn acne. I used the patches and the aloe gel — which both will work — but in these couple of spots, I'll have one or two stubborn (almost below the skin) pimples that just WON'T go away. With this cream, OMG, it's only been a few days, but these spots have actually cleared up significantly." —NicolePrice: $12.89+ (available in two sizes) An E.l.f. hydrating face cream because your skin could use a little TLC after a pool or beach day. This bb is fragrance-free, lightweight, and brightening, aka the perfect cream. I'll take 20! Promising review: "I've been using this for a few I can absolutely tell a difference in my skin. I combine this with E.l.f.'s Triple Bounce Hydration Serum and does wonders. It keeps my face plump and hydrated! It's great for spring/summer months. Anyways, I am 26 years old, btw. 💕 Must-buy! Better than some of the higher price brands." —Leah Price: $13 An antibacterial foaming wash for combating acne that you can use on your face and your body (a double-win in my book). It uses benzoyl peroxide, which can unclog your pores and also getting rid of acne-causing bacteria. Promising review: "I started using PanOxyl one year ago and I haven't looked back. After trying different cleansers that promised to make my acne disappear, but they didn't, I bought this on a whim. I'm not promising it will cure your acne because everyone's skin is different. That being said, if you're fed up with buying cleansers that don't work, then definitely spend the $9 and give it a try. I still have minor breakouts, especially when I'm stressed, but it's nothing compared to the cyst bumps I used to get. I use it in the a.m. and p.m. with serums, lotion, and eye cream. I even use it on my chest and back whenever I take a shower." —KatrinaPrice: $9.79 A resurfacing facial exfoliant, so you can give yourself a facial at home. Not only is this going to save you a lot of money, but you'll love how this can do it all. It can exfoliate, resurface, smooth, renew, rejuvenate, and even hydrate your skin. Promising review: "I'm thrilled to have purchased this product after reading the reviews. I agree with each and every one who gives this AHA Seaweed Gel with Lactic Acid 5 stars. I've been reluctant to purchase AHA/Lactic Acid products for a long while, because my skin, and even my eyes, are so sensitive to them. Still, there is nothing like an AHA/Lactic Acid product when it comes to brightening and smoothing skin, so I held my breath and gave this one a try. Thank you, Apto!! I have found the perfect product for me. It is so gentle, even while helping smooth and brighten my skin. I've only been using it a short while, and there is definitely a visible difference. It seems the best products I've been finding lately are all from Apto!! Finding the Apto line has been such a happy turn of events!" —pattyINnyPrice: $12.99 A pack of star pimple patches to make your breakouts look a bit cuter. Created to grip your face in all the right ways, so you won't catch them falling off all day long or all night, if you choose to sleep in them. Promising review: "They really work when I feel a pimple, I apply my lil' stars and it's gone by the next day." —Carmenr80Price: $10.99 for a 32-pack A box of Clearasil acne-control pads because this 5-in-1 product is designed to help with blocked pores, reduce pimple size, clean away excess oil, and minimize acne marks and blackheads. BTW, it does all that for under $10! Promising review: "I've started reviewing products because I know that reading reviews helps me decide on purchases, so I'd just like to say, this product is AMAZING. It doesn't smell bad, doesn't sting, and it genuinely works. My face feels so good after using them. They're definitely not a bad price either." —18 year old with insomniaPrice: $7.99 A super concentrated vitamin C serum to refresh your skin, while also giving you a glazed donut look. It uses glycolic acid, which can help improve your skin's texture. Promising reviews: "I've used $50+ bottles of Vit C serum, and I can say that I'll never do that again. This stuff works fantastic! I've purchased several times and will continue to do so. The scent is not overwhelming at all; it is very light and enjoyable. I use this morning and night as a regular part of my skincare routine. I love that it is vegan and cruelty-free. Definitely recommend!" —Maria ElenaPrice: $17.99 A container of acne-clearing toner pads because bad break-outs happen, and you need people to focus on you, not your one giant zit during your big work presentation. These pads are textured and use salicylic acid to help clear your whiteheads and blackheads. Promising review: "I used to buy blemish pads that were double the price of these from a different store. When I started using these, they worked even better than the more expensive ones! I have been using them for about 4 months now and my skin is virtually clear! These dramatically reduce 'maskne' and they don't dry out my skin like other ones I have used." —beccaPrice: $9.99 for a pack of 60 A container of makeup-removing wipes that'll actually take off your makeup, including that one product you struggle to remove. Fun fact: These wipes are compostable! I've been using these for years and they've become a go-to product for me. I cannot live without them and yes, I am being so serious. I've found these actually do a great job of removing my makeup and SPF!Promising review: "Oh, I absolutely love this makeup remover! I have sensitive skin, and this is incredibly gentle on my skin. It effectively removes all my makeup without leaving any residue behind. I highly recommend it!" —AxePrice: $1.99+ (available in three sizes) A set of under-eye patches to help revive your eyes after staying up all night overthinking that one thing you said five years ago. (Yes, I'm talking from experience.) These use coconut and cucumber, which help nourish, strengthen, and soothe skin. They also contain caffeine and hyaluronic acid to help de-puff. Read more about the skincare benefits of caffeine at the Cleveland review: "I have pretty sensitive skin and these eye masks do not bother me at all like some of the other reviews. They are very cooling and completely stay in place!! I like to get up early before my kids and these are part of my everyday routine- they do great at reducing some of the puffiness under my eyes. I highly recommend and you can't beat the price!!" —MeganDPrice: $25 for a pack of 60 A 3-in-1 cleansing bar that works as a cleanser, mask, and exfoliator because your skin could use an all-in-one product like this one. Kojic acid and niacinamide work together to brighten your skin and help with dark spots. Promising review: "This is an affordable, highly-effective, staple cleansing bar for the body. I'm pleased with the profile of ingredients to combat hyperpigmentation, KP, and other issues. I usually use it and leave it on up to 5 minutes before rinsing it off. It washes away clean and cleans well. I regularly purchase this product every so often. Overall, it's great as there are not that many hyperpigmentation treatments/cleansers formulated for the body. Check this one out." —NyaPrice: $15.59 A rose boba face mask because your skin is a little thirsty this season. It uses rose flower extract to help brighten your complexion, and niacinamide, which can help with redness and evening out your skin tone. Promising review: "I've always gravitated to the Neutrogena Hydro Boost masks. I grabbed one of these Rose Boba ones to try out. I was in the sun all day, and my face, while not sunburned, was a little swollen and irritated...I wore this mask for 20 minutes, and I look like I just had a facial! The swelling and redness were completely gone. I immediately recommended them to my sister. I will be repurchasing again right now." —JZPrice: $4.99 A K-beauty moisturizer that's designed to help calm and deeply hydrate your skin, because let's face it, your skin could use a little TLC. This gently peels away your dead skin, leaving you as glowy as the sun. Promising review: "In all honesty, I ordered some E.l.f. products one day because a) they were inexpensive b) my overpriced products weren't working and c) I was bored I was pretty much blown away all around, but this exfoliant is life-changing! It polishes away flakey skin and preps beautifully for foundation without redness or abrasion. I've used it for dry cuticles, and on ankles and feet before self-tanning = perfection!
