Rohit Sharma hangs up his Test boots: Revisiting the best moments in Hitman's career
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket. Let's have a look at the best moments of Rohit Sharma's Test career.
Rohit Sharma, popularly known as the 'Hitman', was the 280th cricketer to represent India in Men's Tests.
Rohit Sharma had to wait for more than 6 years from the time of his International debut to make his Test debut. Rohit's 177 against West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2013 is the 2nd highest score by an Indian in Tests. Shikhar Dhawan's 187 against Australia in the same year remains as the highest score by an Indian on debut. Overall, Rohit's 177 is the ninth best effort by a debutant.
Rohit Sharma's 2nd Test was also the 200th and final Test match of the great Sachin Tendulkar. Rohit celebrated the fellow Mumbaikar's farewell by scoring a century. He was the third and the last Indian to score centuries in his first and second Test matches.
Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly were the other two batters to score centuries in their first two Tests.
Unfortunately, those two centuries remain as Rohit's only two Test centuries till November 2017. Rohit was one of four centurions for India against Sri Lanka in Nagpur. Virat Kohli's 213 was the headline act of the match.
Rohit Sharma opened in Tests for the first-ever time in 2019. Just like his debut game, Rohit scored a daddy century in his first match as an opener. In fact, he scored twin centuries in that game. Rohit's 176 and 127 against South Africa in Visakhapatnam gave him more honours. He was the first batter to score twin centuries in the first Test as an opener. He followed it up with his maiden double century in the Ranchi Test against the same opposition.
Batting in home conditions is considered to be a cakewalk for most batters. However, batting in India became particularly tricky since the start of 2021. Result-oriented pitches became a norm all over the world after the introduction of the World Test Championship in 2019.
England won the first Test in Chennai in 2021, thanks to Joe Root's double century. India were in a must-win situation to qualify for the WTC final and demanded bowling-friendly conditions. The second Test played in Chennai was instant proof. India scored 329 runs in the first innings, out of which 161 came from Rohit Sharma. It will remain as one of the finest knocks by an opener in Chennai.
India toured England later that year and was in dire straits in the 2nd innings of the Oval Test. India had already conceded a 99-run lead, and then came Rohit's finest moment in Test cricket. Rohit and KL Rahul added 83 runs for the first wicket and managed to erase the majority of the deficit by themselves. Rohit notched his first century in overseas conditions and acted as the major catalyst for a famous 157-run victory.
Rohit Sharma's Test form in 2024 reached a new high. He scored two Test centuries against England, one in Rajkot and another one in Dharamsala. The series was remembered more for Yashasvi Jaiswal's 712 runs than for Rohit Sharma's 400 runs. The way Rohit Sharma led the young squad, comprising the likes of Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, and Devdutt Padikkal, would have given him the most satisfaction as the captain of the Indian Test team.
Rohit Sharma may not have achieved the heights of Sunil Gavaskar or Sachin Tendulkar, the greatest Test batters from Mumbai. He may not have achieved similar heights as his contemporary, Virat Kohli. However, Rohit will have a place in the list of most stylish batters to have ever played for India.

Pat Cummins mocked with a cheeky dig by English TV presenter ahead of WTC Final: ‘Do you ever get anyone out?'
Australia captain Pat Cummins appears to be in a bit of relaxed mode as he gears up for the World Test Championship Final against South Africa in England. The Australian skipper recently wrapped up his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL before heading to England for the high-stakes WTC final. After reaching there, Cummins got involved in some off-field commitments. Recently, he shot a fun segment with famous English TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson and other TV personalities Kaleb Cooper and Charlie Ireland. A video of Prime Video went viral, showing Cummins playing cricket with the other three ahead of the WTC final in London. At the start of the video, Cummins gets hit for a few shots, which causes Clarksen to take a shot at him. "Do you ever get anyone out?" he said. A post shared by Prime Video Sport AUNZ (@primevideosportaunz) However, he didn't age well for Cooper, who was batting at the moment, as Cummins got the better of him and cleaned him up on the very next delivery. Cooper shouted at Clarksen and said, "Why did you do that?" Cummins will lead the Australian team in their second successive WTC final. He led them to the title win in the last edition after the win over India. Meanwhile, South Africa will be playing their maiden WTC final after they topped the standings of the third edition of the ICC tournament. Cummins showered praise on the Proteas and believes the Temba Bavuma-led side has multiple match-winners in their midst to pose a challenge. "They always seem to compete in every tournament. They have got a lot of experience, especially the white-ball teams - they play across different franchise leagues. Rabada, Maharaj, Bavuma, they have played a lot of cricket over the years," said the Aussie skipper. "They have really good fast bowlers, they always seem to have not just one or two main guys but they have got four-six guys they can call," he said. The Aussie captain asserted that there is a bit of mystique when they face South Africa, as they haven't played much against them as compared to India. "And yeah, some batters, you have not seen much (of them), but they have scored plenty of domestic runs. (We have) played most of the guys in the squad, certainly not everyone. There is always a little bit of mystique around South Africa, because we do not play them as often as, say India," he concluded.

WATCH: Fuming R Ashwin walks back unhappy with umpire's decision during TNPL game
Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin was seen fuming during the Tamil Nadu Premier League. The 38-year-old who plays for Dindigul Dragons was judged LBW off the bowling of Sai Kishore, who plays for IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans. Ashwin was seen in a long argument with the umpire, and he was thundering off the field and was seen hitting his pads in anger with the bat. 'Ashwin is saying 'he has bowled this from over the stumps, ma'am', arguing his case that it was pitched well outside leg stump,' said one of the commentators on AIR during the incident. Dindigul Dragons burnt both their reviews in the opening over in the hope of overturning the wide call from the umpire. Ashwin's 18 is the second-highest score alongside RK Jayant. Shivam Singh, with his 30, was the top scorer as the Dragons were bundled out for a mere 93 runs from 16.2 overs. Esakkimuthu A was the pick of the bowlers for Tamizhans with four wickets, with M Mathivannan picking three wickets. Skipper Sai Kishore too chipped in with a couple. R Ashwin's retirement after the third Test during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy came in as a bit of a surprise at the time. The off-spinner after bowling well in the Adelaide Test on a wicket that was not conducive for spinners was axed from the Gabba Test at the end of which he called it a day. With 537 wickets to his name when asked if he would have liked to have a farewell Test for his retirement he responded by saying, 'Where is the place?' 'I want to play more cricket. Where is the place? Obviously not in the Indian dressing room but from somewhere else. I want to be honest with the game. Imagine if I want to play the farewell Test but I do not deserve a place. Imagine, I am only in the team because it is my farewell Test. I don't want that. I felt there was more strength in my cricket. I could have played more but it is always better to finish when people ask 'why' and not 'why not',' Ashwin said on Ash ki Bath. 'What difference will this make if I came out with the ball and people are clapping? How long will people talk about it? When social media was not there, people talked about it and forgot after one week. There is no need for a farewell. The game has given us a lot and we have played with a lot of happiness.' Ashwin added.
