Rockies' $70 Million All-Star Ryan McMahon Emerging as Cubs' Next Gem

The Chicago Cubs have been one of the hottest teams in baseball, with Seiya Suzuki, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker forming arguably the best outfield in baseball. The rotation has held firm despite a season-ending Tommy John surgery and absence to Shota Imanaga, and the Cubs have a limited amount to address at the July 30th deadline. Advertisement One of those areas, however, is third base. With Matt Shaw struggling in his first big league licks, the combination of Jon Berti, Nicky Lopez and Vidal Brujan has left a lot to be desired. The Cubs, according to recent rumors, may find their answer out west. Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon (24) throws to first base during the fifth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Carlin III-Imagn Images USA Today's Bob Nightengale wrote that the Cubs, along with the Dodgers, have interest in Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, who was an All-Star in 2024. McMahon was a trade target for many teams last year, including the Yankees, but the Rockies refused to budge on their All-Star. Starting out at 8-37 and clearly already out of playoff contention, the Rockies might look to seize any value that they can on McMahon, who remains one of the few players that are worth a look. Advertisement After this season, McMahon has two years and $32 million left on his six-year, $70 million contract signed in 2022, and a player of his caliber coming with two years of club control would inflate his value. Jazz Chisholm Jr attracted a similar price tag last year due to his remaining years of control, with several top Yankees prospects going to Miami in the deal. With Shaw still needing time to develop, and the Cubs in go mode, could they trade for McMahon before or during the deadline? It certainly makes a lot of sense. Cubs Blockbuster Trade Idea Adds Cy Young Finalist Amid Shota Imanaga News

Cubs Blockbuster Trade Idea Adds Cy Young Finalist Amid Shota Imanaga News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer went on The Show podcast, hosted by the New York Post's Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman, to discuss the Cubs' start to the season and possible future plans. Advertisement One question Hoyer was asked, which many have wondered as July approaches, is what will the Cubs do at the deadline? With one of the best lineups in baseball, and Pete Crow-Armstrong a surprise All-Star candidate, the Cubs could legitimately make a run this year. Hoyer hinted that the Cubs' focus at the deadline will be adding pitching depth, which he said is imperative in today's game. Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen.© Joe Rondone/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Following Hoyer's appearance on the podcast, The Athletic insider Jim Bowden proposed a very interesting trade for the Cubs to pursue. Bowden said that the Cubs should target Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen, who has struggled in 2025 but has two solid seasons preceding this one. Advertisement Gallen has pitched to a 4-8 record and 5.15 ERA, but he is still the same pitcher who started for the National League in the 2023 All-Star game and finished third in the Diamondbacks' pennant winning 2023 season. "Gallen would need to have three or four strong starts before the deadline for the Diamondbacks to get the strong prospect package they'd want, but if they fall further out of contention, they might have to trade the impending free agent," Bowden wrote. Gallen has shown flashes of his former greatness, including two separate starts in May against the NL-best New York Mets where he allowed two runs in 13 innings while striking out 14. The prediction of a Gallen-Cubs trade comes in the midst of news that ace Shota Imanaga is progressing well in his rehab. Advertisement Imanaga threw two innings in a rehab start for the Cubs' rookie-level affiliate on Monday, which is a big step as he recovers from a hamstring strain. The Cubs have plenty to offer in trade talks, and plenty of reason to go for it at the deadline. Acquiring Gallen would put the rest of the league on notice. Red Sox ticket and merchandise sales see an immediate spike after call-up of top prospect Roman Anthony

'That generally happens when a team clinches the playoffs or makes it to the next round,' said Holzman, who indicated that before the call-up, tickets he had not already given away to charity because he knew he would be stuck with them were selling for half price. 'It's not normal. In my 40 years of doing this, the last time I saw anything resembling this was November of 2015 after David Ortiz announced his retirement, and the Red Sox said they were going to honor him in the last game of the 2016 season.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The bounce continued into this homestand, with post-announcement sales doubling for Tuesday night's game and tripling for Wednesday night, Holzman said. Advertisement The Yankees are in town this weekend, and with the Sox taking two of three in the Bronx last weekend, Holzman said there's 'renewed interest' in those tickets. NESN said Tuesday it set a record on its streaming platform. NESN 360 had the highest unique audience for any live event during Monday's Red Sox broadcast, with the total audience on the platform 18 percent higher than the previous record, which was set on Opening Day this season. NESN also said more than 80 percent of NESN 360 subscribers tuned in at some point to see Anthony's first game. Advertisement Bobby D'Angelo, an owner of Twins Enterprise that runs the Red Sox Team Store outside Fenway Park, hopes his business will be able to jump on the Anthony bandwagon. He's placed a large order to have more Anthony jerseys and T-shirts for sale, hopefully in time for the Yankees series. D'Angelo has to be cautious about placing too big of an order too soon, given the chance that despite the considerable hype surrounding Anthony, he may need more seasoning later in the year. Another factor to consider is Anthony's current uniform number, 48. 'That doesn't sound like Yaz or Ted Williams to me, that's a rough number,' said D'Angelo. 'But believe me, we have got orders in for Anthony. We want him.' Eventually, D'Angelo expects Anthony to rival fellow outfielder and current Red Sox merchandise leader 'by a mile,' Jarren Duran. 'I can tell you right now he and Duran will be 1 and 2 — all he's got to do is be a .250 hitter,' said D'Angelo. 'They're going to love this guy.' Holzman ascribed some powerful comps when it comes to the hopes and dreams surrounding Anthony. 'How long have we been hearing about him? It's like Cooper Flagg and AJ Dybantsa,' said Holzman. 'He's got the name, he's got the looks, he's got the attitude, everything you read about him, he's the real deal, right? I don't think since Mookie [Betts] has there been this kind of excitement.'
