Vaishnavi Hagawane Pune Dowry Death: Of the 30 bruises, 15 were inflicted 24 hours before her death. The possibility of an assault with a rod hasn't been ruled out
The post-mortem report of Pune's Vaishnavi Hagawane shows she was brutally beaten and tortured by her in-laws hours before her death, termed suicide by the family.
Meanwhile, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police on Monday arrested five men, including Pritam Patil, the son of a former Karnataka minister, for allegedly sheltering her father-in-law and expelled Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Rajendra Hagawane and his son and her brother-in-law Sushil.
CHILLING DETAILS
According to News18 Lokmat, the report stated there were a total of 30 bruises on Vaishnavi's body. Experts said that the possibility of her being assaulted with a rod cannot be ruled out. Of the 30 bruises, 15 were inflicted 24 hours before her death.
HOW DID VAISHNAVI DIE?
Vaishnavi was found dead at her in-laws' house in Bhukum area on May 16. While the Hagawanes from Pune claimed Vaishnavi died by suicide, her parents, the Kaspates, an influential family in the state, and the other daughter-in-law of the family alleged repeated physical assault and torture for dowry.
Vaishnavi's father Anil Kaspate then lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Shashank and her in-laws at the Bavdhan police station. No suicide note was found, police said.
In the FIR, Kaspate alleged that at the time of the wedding, they had given 51 tolas of gold, silver, and a Fortuner SUV to her in-laws. 'Their demands started right from the time of engagement… We gave gold and several silver utensils," Kaspate alleged. 'We wanted to give some other vehicle… However, they insisted that they want only Fortuner, and we gave it to them," he said.
Tired of the torture, Vaishnavi had allegedly attempted to die by suicide even after a few months of the marriage.
The FIR further alleged that Vaishnavi's in-laws had been abusing her, mentally and physically, asking her to bring Rs 2 crore more to purchase a property. 'Vaishnavi told me about this… We conveyed our inability to pay the amount. And after this, the mental and physical torture from her in-laws increased," he said.
Vaishnavi's husband Shashank, mother-in-law Lata, and sister-in-law Karishma were arrested on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide after the FIR was filed. Karishma's friend Nilesh Chavan, too, was arrested for kidnapping Vaishnavi's child.

WHO IS PRITAM PATIL?
Pritam Patil is the son of Veerkumar Patil.
Veerkumar, a senior Congress leader and former Karnataka energy minister, served as an MLA for 28 years.
HAGAWANE, SUSHIL ON THE RUN
After Vaishnavi's death, Hagawane and Sushil were on the run for nearly a week.
They sought refuge in multiple locations including Vadgaon Maval, Lonavala, Satara, and areas near the Maharashtra-Karnataka border.
A video of them eating at a dhaba also went viral.
Among their hideouts was a resort in Kognoli near the state border where they stayed between May 19 and 21. The booking was made under the name of Pritam Patil.
The duo was arrested on May 23 when they tried to flee from the Swargate area.
BONDED OVER HORSES
Among Hagawane's hobbies were driving expensive cars, and keeping foreign-bred dogs. He was also fond of horse breeding. He had a black horse.
It is being said that Patil, too, was into horse breeding, which is how he came in touch with Hagawane and their friendship grew.

Woman to get 1.2L from airline for lost baggage

Mumbai: Observing that there was mala fide negligence by the Flynas Airline supporting staff as well as officials, a district consumer commission has ordered it to pay Rs 1.25 lakh to a Powai-based woman for a lost bag, along with Rs 10,000 for mental agony. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The complaint was filed by Nupur Rohida. Flynas Airlines, a low-cost Saudi Arabian airline, despite being served, remained absent from the proceedings, leading the commission to proceed ex parte. In an order on May 29, the commission said the airline's actions were not satisfactory in the incident. "The opposite party could have checked the CCTV footage to confirm the incident and could have brought a more factual report on record. However, we do not find any genuine efforts taken by the Opposite Party to confirm the incident to trace the lost bag. The Opposite Party purposely avoided all the logical actions to find the lost bag," the commission said. The commission further said that there are set rules for baggage loss compensations as per the Montreal Convention (1999). "The Montreal Convention…is an international treaty that governs airline liability for passengers and their baggage on international flights. It standardises rules for compensation in cases of baggage loss, delay, or damage," the commission said. Rohida moved the commission in 2025. The incident occurred during a family trip to Turkey in December 2023 and January 2024. Rohida and her family had return flights booked for January 2, 2024, from Istanbul to Riyadh, with a connecting flight to Mumbai on January 3, 2024. At Istanbul airport, the complainant handed over five bags to the airline staff. However, the airline staff mistakenly tagged only four bags, and the fifth bag went onto the conveyor belt without a tag. The complainant immediately brought this error to the attention of the staff at the ticket and baggage counter. The staff then physically gave a bag tag to the complainant, however, the fifth bag was permanently lost.

'If verdict out abroad but trial on in India, case must be heard at length'

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court observed that a case in which the judgment was rendered by a foreign court, and was also sub judice in India, must be heard at length. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Sumit Dass made the observation on May 5 while hearing the submissions of Shravan Gupta, an accused in a money laundering case. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Gupta was convicted by a court in Abu Dhabi last year for the same offences as charged by the Enforcement Directorate - fraud, deception, and embezzlement. Gupta and six others, including a private company, filed a revision petition against a magisterial court order of November 2024 in which the court issued them and others summons for the offences of fraud and cheating. Meanwhile, the court stayed proceedings in the matter until July 4, the next hearing date. The court also issued notice to the ED and the state to file a reply in the matter. The case is related to a complaint filed by Emaar India Limited against MGF Development Limited, Gupta and 11 others for large-scale fraud and siphoning of Rs 180 crore. In April, Gupta moved an application before the court, submitting that on February 27, 2024, a court in Abu Dhabi had convicted of the same offences as in the present case. "Passing of the said judgment was concealed by the complainant from this court as well as from the trial court," the plea stated. Gupta pleaded that he cannot be prosecuted again, and the impugned order deserves to be set aside. The entire prosecution is bad in law in view of Article 20(2) of the Constitution of India as well as Section 300 CrPC, Gupta stated.
