SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said he wouldn't allow Christian Pulisic to dictate which games he would be available for, explaining why he rejected the star's offer to play in a pair of friendlies ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup but not the tournament itself.
'I am the head coach. I am not a mannequin,' Pochettino said Saturday, a day ahead of the Americans' opener against Trinidad and Tobago.

Pulisic told the U.S. team he was willing to play in the recent games but wanted to skip the tournament to rest after playing about 120 matches over the past two years for AC Milan and the national team.
The Americans lost the friendlies, 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 to Switzerland, and were dealt their first four-game losing streak since 2007. Pulisic told CBS Sports Golzazo he respected Pochettino's decision to exclude him but 'I didn't understand it.'
'Players (do) not need to understand or not understand,' Pochettino said. 'Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan. Because if not, OK, we invert — we swap the position, no? That is obvious. ... The most important thing is that we explain why we decided not to include (him) in the two friendly games. And then if you have some problems, no, that is not my problem to understand.'
Pulisic, 26, is the top American player with 32 goals in 78 international appearances. Pochettino compared Pulisic's situation to that of defender Sergiño Dest, who reported to training camp in Chicago ahead of the friendlies and then was dropped to continue regaining fitness in his recovery from a torn ACL.

'It's up to us after to assess, to analyze if you need rest or not need rest because we have a group of professional performance doctor and athletic coaches in the federation that can assess you,' Pochettino said.
The coach said he understood Pulisic's request but wouldn't alter his decision to have one roster for the entire June/July camp.
'Our decision was to go with the players who wanted to play,' Pochettino said.
Pochettino rejected Pulisic being labeled the top American player.
'You say the best player. Yes, is a good player, of course, but he needs to perform,' the coach said. 'If he perform(s) well, and he's the best, it is normal he is going to have a place in the national team ... But it's not because ... I want to be, I want to play, I want to do this, I want to do that.'

Pochettino said it was possible midfielder Tyer Adams, who has turf toe, could be available Sunday.
'I hope on the end of this journey together we can leave a trophy that's for sure well deserved, first for the players and then for the country and for the fans to recover the belief and recover that good energy and the good feelings,' he said. 'That is important. In one year that we have an amazing opportunity in the World Cup, being a host of the World Cup.'

How to watch the USMNT vs. Trinidad and Tobago in Concacaf Gold Cup group stage opener

Gold Cup action continues Sunday, with the hosts introduced as big favorites for their opening match. The United States men's national team starts its tournament against Trinidad and Tobago. The USMNT has won this competition seven times, second only to Mexico's nine titles. The Soca Warriors, meanwhile, have just one semifinal finish (2000) across 17 appearances. Goliath (goal-iath?) draws David in Group D. Advertisement International streaming via Concacaf GO. Mauricio Pochettino is trying to redeem a disappointing semifinal finish in 2023. The U.S. side was either champion or runner-up from 2017 through '21, but lost a penalty-shootout to Panama in San Diego. Twenty-one different players will make their Gold Cup debuts in this tournament. The captain, 37-year-old Tim Ream, is expected to earn his 70th USMNT cap on Sunday. Midfielder Brenden Aaronson leads the 26-man squad with eight international goals, but the Americans have a core of talented young attackers in Brian White, Diego Luna and Patrick Agyemang. That trio has put together 24 goals in the first half of the MLS season. This should be a get-right matchup for the U.S., and it sorely needs one. The USMNT lost both of its June friendlies to Turkey and Switzerland, and it took losses to Canada and Panama in March's Concacaf Nations League. The attack has only two goals in the last four appearances. The U.S. is slated at No. 16 in the latest FIFA men's world rankings, which dropped in April and will be updated again in July. Trinidad and Tobago comes in at No. 100. T&T has only four Gold Cup match victories since its 2000 semifinal run. Manager Dwight Yorke was on that breakout team at the dawn of the millennium, and he's now tasked with engineering a huge upset over the host country. MLS fans may recognize Kevin Molino and Joevin Jones, who are among the most-capped players on the Gold Cup squad. After Sunday's showdown, Group D play will resume on June 19, with the U.S. facing Saudi Arabia and Trinidad and Tobago getting Haiti. Shohei Ohtani's 2 homers, Clayton Kershaw's 7 sharp innings propel Dodgers past Giants 11-5

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani hit two homers and Clayton Kershaw pitched seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 11-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night. Ohtani led off with his 24th homer, ending a 10-game homer drought — his longest since joining the Dodgers last season. The three-time MVP added another solo shot in the sixth for his third multi-homer game of the season and the 22nd of his career. The 37-year-old Kershaw (2-0) gave a vintage performance in the sixth and best start of his 18th major league season. The lefty needed just 81 pitches to finish seven innings. Casey Schmitt hit a grand slam in his second straight game for San Francisco, connecting off Dodgers utilityman Kiké Hernández during the Giants' five-run ninth inning. Hernández recorded his first career strikeout when he caught Christian Koss looking, but he also allowed five runs on three hits and three walks while Los Angeles attempted to save its bullpen. Anthony Banda had to come on to get the final out. Mookie Betts had a two-run double during a five-run second inning for the Dodgers, who rebounded after the Giants pulled even with Los Angeles atop the NL West standings Friday night with a 6-2 victory . Landen Roupp (4-5) gave up six runs on four hits and five walks while failing to escape the second inning in the shortest start of his career. Teoscar Hernández added a two-run homer in the sixth and Miguel Rojas homered in the eighth. After Roupp walked two leading off the second, Andy Pages and Michael Conforto drove them in. San Francisco intentionally walked Ohtani to load the bases for Betts, who blasted a double. Ohtani came home on Will Smith's flyout. San Francisco put just one ball in play against Kershaw hit harder than 100 mph: Heliot Ramos' double-play groundout in the first. LA's Dustin May (3-4, 4.46 ERA) faces Kyle Harrison (1-1, 4.56) in the series finale Sunday. ___ AP MLB:

Illinois' best 15 public golf courses rankings: See what's No. 1

What are the best public-access golf courses in the state of Illinois? Trying to narrow the nearly 300 Illinois public-access golf courses into a top 15 is daunting, but that's just what Golfweek, part of the USA TODAY Network just like the Journal Star, has been doing for many years. Advertisement Golfweek earlier this month revealed its full state-by-state rankings for public-access golf courses, and Illinois' top courses were distilled into the 15 best. The top spot is held by Dubsdread — No. 4 course at Cog Hill Golf Club in Lemont. No. 2 is TPC Deere Run in Silvis, while The Glen Club in Glenview sits at No. 3. How do the rankings come to pass? Golfweek uses hundreds of course raters to analyze 10 different criteria on a scale of 1-10 at each place to produce an average course rating. Those categories include routing, conditioning, greens, and memorability and variety of golf holes. Raters also file a single, overall rating on each course, which are averaged to produce all of Golfweek's Best course rankings. To qualify, a course must allow public play in some fashion. "If there's a will, there's a tee time — no membership required," Golfweek's creative director and travel editor Jason Lusk writes.
