
Goa Tourism targets Oman market with roadshow
Muscat – India's popular tourist destination Goa – on the coast of the Arabian Sea – held a promotional roadshow in Muscat on Monday, aiming to attract tourists from Oman and strengthen its presence in the Middle East market.
The Goa Tourism event brought together travel professionals, tour operators, media, and potential investors to explore Goa's expanding tourism offerings. It was attended by Kuldeep Arolkar, Managing Director of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, along with representatives of Oman's travel and hospitality sector.
The delegation from the western Indian state also included members of the Travel Trade Association of Goa, led by its president Jack Sukhija, and featured charter operators, hoteliers, and travel agents.
Rohan A Khaunte, Goa's Minister for Tourism, said the state is developing a broader tourism identity. According to him, Goa is evolving beyond its beaches to offer a diverse and enriching tourism experience – from the serene charm of our hinterlands and spiritual circuits to world-class infrastructure for MICE tourism.
'Through this roadshow in Oman, we aim to strengthen ties with the Middle East market, inviting travellers and businesses alike to discover Goa's vibrant culture, natural beauty, and growing potential as a holistic tourism destination.'
Kedar Naik, Director of Goa Tourism, said international outreach efforts such as the roadshow are part of a long-term strategy to position Goa as a global tourism hub. 'Goa has always been a melting pot of cultures, offering visitors a blend of rich heritage, serene landscapes, and immersive experiences. Through strategic international engagements, we aim to strengthen tourism partnerships, enhance connectivity, and showcase our commitment to regenerative and sustainable tourism.'
Arolkar said the Muscat event underscored Goa's ambitions to become a world-class tourism destination. He acknowledged that Oman is an important market for Goa, and 'we are committed to strengthening tourism collaboration between our regions.' The event also highlighted new tourism strategies, including regenerative tourism, eco-tourism circuits, and niche segments such as wellness, adventure, and cultural heritage tourism.

Good news expected soon on India-Oman FTA: Minister
Muscat – India and Oman are close to finalising a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with some 'good news' expected very soon regarding the signing of the deal, according to India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. As reported by several Indian media outlets on Monday, Goyal stated that negotiations between India and Oman on the proposed free trade agreement are progressing towards a conclusion. The talks gained renewed momentum following Goyal's visit to Muscat in January this year. The negotiations for the agreement, officially known as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), formally commenced in November 2023. 'I think you will see some good news very soon on the Oman FTA,' Goyal told reporters during his official visit to France, when asked whether the agreement could be concluded this year, according to PTI. Goyal was in France to hold discussions with French leaders and businesses aimed at enhancing trade and investment ties. He was also scheduled to attend a mini-ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Tuesday. Oman is India's third-largest export destination among the GCC countries. India already has a similar agreement in place with another GCC member, the United Arab Emirates, which came into effect in May 2022. India's key imports from Oman include petroleum products and urea, which together account for over 70% of total imports. Other significant imports from Oman comprise polymers of propylene and ethylene, petcoke, gypsum, chemicals, and iron and steel. Speaking about such FTAs, Goyal remarked that these agreements not only promote trade in goods and services, but also strengthen supply chains and instill confidence among businesses on both sides through stable policies and predictability, according to the PTI report. 'So, in a way, it's a big message when you conclude an FTA,' he added.

Rising temperatures in Oman shape Eid travel plans
Muscat – As the Eid al Adha break begins on Thursday, residents across Oman are making the most of the extended holiday with travel plans ranging from international getaways to quiet family time at home. The five-day break is proving to be a welcome pause in the summer calendar. Among international destinations, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Turkey and Sri Lanka are seeing a surge in interest. These countries are popular for their pleasant weather, affordability and accessibility. 'I'm travelling to Georgia with my cousins,' said Sanjeev Menon, an Indian marketing professional based in Muscat. 'It's budget-friendly, visa-on-arrival, and the mountains are a perfect break from the heat. I booked tickets for three almost 10 days ago and saved on last-minute expenses. I really want to escape the heat.' Turkey continues to attract families seeking a mix of shopping, food and history, while Sri Lanka's beaches and tea plantations appeal to travellers looking for a quieter experience. 'We've seen an incredible response from families this Eid — with most group departures already fully booked, especially following the announcement of school vacations,' said Sreedhu Nair, Director at Travel Diaries. 'To meet the growing demand, we are now offering tailor-made packages to trending destinations like Tashkent in Uzbekistan; Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan; Moscow in Russia and the Schengen countries.' For those staying within Oman, destinations like Jabal Akhdar, Jebel Sifah and Sur remain popular. These locations offer a scenic escape with a couple of hours' drive from Muscat. 'Jabal Akhdar is where we go every Eid,' said Mohammed al Habsi, an Omani civil engineer. 'It's peaceful, and the temperature is always pleasant.' Not everyone is packing their bags. Some residents are choosing to celebrate Eid quietly in Muscat. Beachside barbecues, rooftop dinners and movie nights are among the activities planned. 'This time, I'm staying in Muscat,' said Fatma al Riyami, an Omani university student. 'We're planning a get-together at home with friends and lots of Omani sweets.' Neha Kapoor, a homemaker, echoed the sentiment. 'Sometimes, home is the best holiday. My children enjoy the beach, and we avoid the crowds. Also, my husband's friends are visiting from Dubai, so we'll have some fun times with them.'

India approves stealth fighter programme amid tensions with Pakistan
NEW DELHI: India's defence minister has approved a framework for building the country's most advanced stealth fighter jet, the defence ministry said on Tuesday, amid a new arms race with Pakistan weeks after a military conflict between the neighbours. Indian state-run Aeronautical Development Agency, which is executing the programme, will shortly invite initial interest from defence firms for developing a prototype of the warplane, envisaged as a twin-engine 5th generation fighter, the ministry said. The project is crucial for the Indian Air Force, whose squadrons of mainly Russian and ex-Soviet aircraft have fallen to 31 from an approved strength of 42 at a time when rival China is expanding its air force rapidly. Pakistan has one of China's most advanced warplanes, the J-10, in its arsenal. Militaries of nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan faced-off in four days of fighting this month, which saw use of fighter jets, missiles, drones and artillery by both sides before a ceasefire was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. It was the first time both sides utilised drones at scale and the South Asian powers are now locked in a drones arms race, according to Reuters' interviews with 15 people, including security officials, industry executives and analysts in the two countries. India will partner with a domestic firm for the stealth fighter programme, and companies can bid independently or as a joint venture, the defence ministry said in a statement, adding that the bids would be open for both private and state-owned firms. In March, an Indian defence committee had recommended including the private sector in military aircraft manufacturing to shore up the capabilities of the Indian Air Force and reduce the burden on state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, which makes most of India's military aircraft. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh has previously criticised Hindustan Aeronautics for slow delivery of light combat Tejas aircraft, a 4.5 generation fighter, which the firm blamed on slow delivery of engines from General Electric due to supply chain issues faced by the U.S. firm.
