CII Summit 2025: Startup founders urge for domestic capital, tech push

The founders of several homegrown start-ups across sectors called for a stronger push from domestic investors and a greater focus on technological innovation to help the ecosystem grow and compete globally. Speaking at the CII Annual Business Summit 2025 on Thursday, the founders also highlighted the country's deep pool of skilled talent as a key driver of future growth.
Vrinda Kapoor, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of 3rdiTech (pronounced third-eye tech), a semiconductor company, pointed out that by 2030, China will hold 65 per cent of global semiconductor and electronics capacity for defence. 'That's the beast we are up against, but India is the only country with enough skilled manpower to be able to compete with China. For this, Indian product companies need to emerge, and Indian capital needs to back them,' Kapoor said, adding that 20 per cent of the world's semiconductor design talent is based in three Indian cities—Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune.
On competition with China, Rajat Verma, Founder and CEO of Lohum, a battery recycling and critical minerals refining company, said that while India has sufficient talent, more private capital is needed. 'The Chinese ecosystem is way too deep, way too big. We need the entire downstream ecosystem to be created in India. We have a big market that can be served by Indian companies; this big market allows us to get to scale and then serve the global ecosystem. But one of the problems in the Indian deep tech market is capital, as the private capital market is not deep enough,' Verma said.
Speaking about taking Indian start-ups onto the global stage, Shashank ND, Co-founder and CEO of health-tech firm Practo, said, 'We have become a hub for consumers choosing India as a destination for healthcare, but I think the technology access that could be possible isn't right there.' He added that technological innovation and access could help extend the services of well-trained Indian doctors to people worldwide.
Paavan Nanda, Co-founder and CEO of gaming company WinZo Games, added that in the context of gaming and entertainment, India's rich culture and technological capability could be integrated to create export-ready global products. 'The Indian art and culture, when married with the strength of Indian tech, can come up with an extremely impactful product and companies that can compete with the Activision Blizzards, Googles, and Metas of the world,' Nanda said.

Trump, Xi likely to speak soon on minerals trade dispute, Treasury's Bessent says

US Treasury Secretary Bessent said he believes President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will speak soon to iron out trade issues including a dispute over critical minerals. President Donald Trump on Friday accused China of violating an agreement with the US to mutually roll back tariffs and trade restrictions for critical minerals. 'What China is doing is they are holding back products that are essential for the industrial supply chains of India, of Europe. And that is not what a reliable partner does,' Bessent said in an interview on Sunday with CBS' 'Face the Nation.' 'I am confident that when President Trump and Party Chairman Xi have a call, that this will be ironed out. But the fact that they are withholding some of the products that they agreed to release during our agreement – maybe it's a glitch in the Chinese system, maybe it's intentional. We'll see after the President speaks with the party chairman.' Trump said on Friday he was sure that he would speak to Xi. China said in April that the two leaders had not had a conversation recently. Asked if a talk with Xi was on Trump's schedule, Bessent said, 'I believe we'll see something very soon.'

Delhi: NDMC to build 27-metre clock tower at Talkatora roundabout

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will construct a clock tower at the Talkatora roundabout as a grand architectural landmark, Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said on Sunday. He said that the clock tower would be approximately 27 metre tall and feature a 2-meter clock. Chahal stated that the project has received approval from the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) and aims to establish a distinct identity within Lutyens' Delhi. The NDMC Vice Chairman added that most municipal bodies across the country have iconic clock towers as their symbols, and now NDMC will also develop such a grand architectural landmark. The structure will have an octagonal design, constructed using RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete), and will be adorned with a layer of clay bricks. The surrounding area will feature granite flooring, steel railings, and marble decorations. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1.3 crore, and the target is to complete construction by December 2025. Chahal said: 'Clock towers are not just timekeeping devices; they are also symbols of a city's identity, heritage, and architectural significance. Historically, they have played a vital role in providing public time information.' This clock tower will not only serve as a new attraction for Lutyens' Delhi but also mark the entry point into the NDMC area from nearby MCD regions such as Rajendra Nagar and Karol Bagh, he said. The tower will include internal stairs to facilitate maintenance and repairs. For safety, railings will be installed around the tower, and the base will be decorated with marble, he said. Chahal added that the project is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Viksit Bharat @2047" and reflects the national mission of beautifying Indian cities and preserving cultural heritage. This grand architectural structure in the NDMC area will not only provide timekeeping but also stand as a symbol of national pride, cultural identity, and urban elegance, he said.

Air India eyes 200 narrow-body aircrafts in fresh talks with Airbus, Boeing: Report

NEW DELHI: Air India, owned by the , is reportedly negotiating with Airbus and Boeing regarding a substantial aircraft acquisition, including approximately 200 additional narrow-body aircraft, supplementing their significant 2023 purchase as part of their extensive renovation programme, according to industry sources quoted by Reuters. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The negotiations, which could encompass hundreds of aircraft across various categories according to two sources, build upon previously reported discussions concerning additional wide-body aircraft. Reuters sources indicate Boeing has gained an advantage in potentially supplying additional 777X aircraft. The possibility of another substantial order from India's national carrier emerged as aviation executives convened in India, the world's fastest-expanding aviation market, for a Delhi summit where Prime Minister is scheduled to speak on Monday. In 2023, Air India had placed an unprecedented order for 470 aircraft from both manufacturers, followed by an additional 100 Airbus aircraft order. These consecutive orders coincide with manufacturers facing supply chain difficulties, resulting in significant delivery delays and aircraft shortages. The acquisition of new aircraft is essential for Air India, which experienced limited investment during government ownership. The airline is currently implementing a comprehensive modernisation strategy to regain market share from international competitors. One of the sources indicated the potential narrow-body aircraft order involves 200 units, whilst two others suggested quantities in the hundreds. The timeline remains uncertain, with one source noting pricing negotiations could present challenges as Air India aims to secure terms comparable to IndiGo, which announced new partnerships and additional Airbus orders on Sunday. India's aviation sector is growing at approximately 7% annually, according to Airbus projections. However, analysts note that inadequate infrastructure hampers growth, particularly regarding connectivity between smaller towns and major cities. Prior to the aviation conference in Delhi, the International Air Transport Association, representing 300 global airlines, indicated that Indian carriers were positioned for continued rapid expansion, while facing challenges from high fuel costs and taxation.
