Video: Forensic review of dismembered remains confirms 10 died in Vryheid crash
'A trail of destruction… innocent lives lost, and the lives of many families have been turned upside down.' These were the words of the KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, following a horrific crash near Vryheid in KZN. The Witness reports that after a forensic review of dismembered remains, it was confirmed that 10 people died in the collision. Duma confirmed the death toll after visiting the crash site, hospitals and mortuaries. He said poor visibility in the early hours of the morning contributed to confusion and an initial miscount of casualties at the scene. The devastating accident, involving a bus and a truck, occurred on the R34 near Vryheid in the early hours this morning. The EFF confirmed that the victims were members returning from the party's June 16 Youth Day rally in Umlazi. The party said it is working closely with authorities to identify the deceased and support affected families. According to the Department of Transport, the 10 deceased include seven males and three females. 'Thirty-three passengers sustained minor injuries and were able to walk, three were injured but not critically, and two are in critical condition. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the Dundee Mortuary. Both the bus and truck drivers survived and are receiving medical attention in hospital,' says Duma. The Road Traffic Inspectorate and the SAPS is conducting a thorough investigation into the crash. 'Conflicting survivor accounts have surfaced, with some alleging the bus driver attempted to overtake, while others claim he may have fallen asleep behind the wheel. We do not want to speculate at this stage. We are confident the investigation will provide clarity,' Duma adds. Hijacking syndicate: 3 arrested in Gauteng
A joint law enforcement operation successfully intercepted members of a hijacking syndicate in Evaton West, Gauteng, over the weekend. Law enforcement units from CII Gauteng, Sedibeng Tracking Unit, Sedibeng Flying Squad, Gauteng Traffic Police High Priority Crimes and Internal Affairs and the Sedibeng Infrastructure Unit D Shift intercepted a vehicle hijacking syndicate operating between Randfontein and Evaton West over the weekend. Police spokesperson Constable Thulisile Msibi says the operation was launched following intelligence received from an informant, which indicated that suspects who had hijacked a vehicle in Randfontein were transporting it to Evaton West to be 'cooled off' and later sold to an unknown buyer in the area. Sedibeng Ster reports that the syndicate was reportedly using a white Audi as an escort vehicle, while a red VW Polo was identified as the hijacked vehicle. The team intercepted the suspects on Moakedi Street in Evaton West. 'Upon arrival, one suspect was found inside the red Polo, which was later confirmed to be hijacked [in] a case opened in Mohlakeng. [Other] suspects were discovered in the white Audi, that was 'escorting' the stolen vehicle,' Msibi says. Police recovered one unlicensed firearm with its serial number filed off and 19 rounds of live ammunition inside the Audi. All three suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and possession of a hijacked vehicle. Passport fraud syndicate: 7 suspects to appear in Durban court
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and law enforcement have arrested seven people allegedly involved in a passport fraud syndicate. Berea Mail reports that the suspects, foreign nationals operating in Durban, will appear in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court today. Initially, five people were arrested, but two more have been arrested since the weekend. 'The Serious Corruption Investigation component of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, based in Pretoria, has arrested an additional two suspects in the ongoing operation that began on Saturday in KZN, bringing the number to seven,' says Hawks' Colonel Katlego Mogale. 'The execution operation emanates from a complaint from the DHA relating to the issuance of fraudulent passports to undocumented foreign nationals. The allegations reported serious offences including corruption, fraud and contraventions of the Identification Act [68 of 1997] and Immigration Act [13 of 2002] that took place between February 2020 and July 2023, wherein a group of South African citizens allegedly facilitated the fraudulent acquisition of South African passports by foreign nationals at DHA offices in Durban, specifically the Commercial Street branch. 'These unlawful activities took place outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays, when the DHA offices were officially closed. 'Preliminary investigations by the DHA confirmed that the criminal activities were indeed conducted [during] off-hours when local citizens [were] offered R300 to R1 000 in exchange for their co-operation, especially at DHA offices in Isipingo, Durban Central and Eshowe, resulting in a case being opened for investigation by Serious Corruption Investigation.' The Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber reiterated: 'Our strategy of clamping down on criminals, while using technology to close loopholes they exploit, is how we will ultimately win the war against corruption.' The Hawks are not ruling out the possibility of more suspects being arrested. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
