Maestro Tan Dun champions Hong Kong's unique art and cultural diversity on the mainland and abroad

Tan Dun, the Oscar-winning composer, world-renowned musician, and conductor has empowered Hong Kong's young talents by providing them with global platforms, nurturing artists who are both technically proficient and engaged in international artistic dialogues since his appointment as Hong Kong's Ambassador for Cultural Promotion.
'Hong Kong is a city where Eastern and Western cultures converge. My goal is to bring the city's vibrant arts and culture to the world's most prestigious stages, ensuring that Hong Kong's voice is heard globally,' Tan says. 'I lead young Hong Kong artists in collaborations with top orchestras and directors worldwide. Meanwhile, it is also vital that the city's artistic identity remains deeply connected to its roots. That is why I guide young artists in exploring and sharing the most authentic and traditional aspects of Chinese culture.'
His mentorship of young Hong Kong artists underscores his commitment to expanding the city's cultural influence. Recent initiatives include 'High Mountains and Glaciers,' performed in Shanghai for UNESCO's World Water Day in March 2025, featuring percussionist Karen Yu; and the 'Tea' opera in Fuzhou with Yu, percussionist Elise Liu, and bass-baritone Apollo Wong. Soprano Candice Chung was starred in the 'Tan Dun Earth Day – Tea Garden Opera Festival' in Yunnan this April and will perform Tan's 'Nature's Requiem' with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Radio France Choir in July.

The experience is rewarding for Hong Kong artists. Liu views the WE-Festival as an opportunity to reinforce Hong Kong's identity as an 'East-meets-West' cultural hub. 'We fuse Western instruments with Chinese percussion traditions,' she says.For Chung, Tan's guidance has elevated her artistry. 'In my solo performances of 'Deer of Nine Colours' across the mainland and abroad, I portrayed four roles in 20 minutes—a challenging feat I've mastered,' she says. Chung adds that performing with different world-class orchestras allows her to deliver unique experiences to audiences. She also took part in a performance staged at Paris's Guimet - National Museum of Asian Arts in December 2024.

Both the UN Charter (Article 33) and the Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States adopted alongside in 1970 set out mediation as one of the means to settle international disputes. In the 2012 UN report 'Strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution', accompanied by guidance on effective mediation, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon affirmed that mediation remained one of the most effective and promising ways to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts. Mediation is a voluntary process in which both sides seek an acceptable solution through the help of a neutral third party. Compared with other methods, it is more forward-looking, constructive and conducive to repairing the relationship between the two sides. There is yet no organisation established among governments that is dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation. The International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed), to be established in accordance with the convention, will address this shortcoming in the international dispute settlement mechanism and provide a new legal public good in the international rule of law, marking a milestone in promoting the settlement of international disputes through mediation. As an avid collector of modern and contemporary art, Hong Kong fintech millionaire Kenneth's latest splurge is a whimsical luxury watch with a HK$2 million (US$242,000) price tag. Advertisement The limited edition timepiece by Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet features Companion, the toy character with a skull, crossbones and gloves by American Brian Donnelly, better known as Kaws. The artist and designer first turned his Companion character into toys in 1999, selling out immediately. It is now one of the most valuable intellectual property (IP) products globally. Kenneth's love for Kaws has seen him spending more than HK$3.2 million on about 40 toys over the years, including two 1.2-metre (four-foot) Companion figures, a dozen smaller figurines and his most recent acquisition, the watch. Only 250 Kaws watches were made. Kenneth's superfan status landed him an invitation to the launch party in Switzerland last November. Meet the teenage philanthropist behind 1000 Suns and YouthCORE
Philanthropist and social entrepreneur Brian Yip's passion for making a difference started early. Very early. Like, age five early. 'My earliest memory is helping out at a book fair,' says Yip, founder of charitable platforms 1000 Suns and YouthCORE. 'Back then my mum instilled in me the importance of service and being involved in my community,' taking him along to recycling events, helping pack food for homeless people and visiting elderly people living in cage homes. 'As I got older, it taught me about giving back and the importance of compassion.' Aged 13, Yip started volunteering with Mother's Choice , a Hong Kong charity supporting children without families and pregnant teenagers. Growing up as an only child, 'whether it's my friend's siblings or other children', he says, 'I really try to be the big brother'. On his first day as its youngest-ever child care home volunteer, Yip 'wasn't sure how the kids would react to this guy who's only 10 years older than them', but 'five minutes after I walked in, a baby girl grabbed onto my leg, looked up and smiled'.
