Fahmi Fadzil urges caution on social media after UPSI crash
SINTOK: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has urged content creators and social media users to exercise caution and uphold proper etiquette, when sharing or producing content related to the tragic accident which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik, Perak, early yesterday morning.
He said that this reminder was to protect the privacy and emotions of the victims' families.
'I urge everyone to give the families of the victims as much space and privacy as possible. I came across a piece of content made by an individual at the scene of the incident, and inside the bus.
'Although the message is a message of condolence, for me it is an accident area which is under investigation by the authorities, so be careful in producing content,' he said at a press conference, here, today.
Earlier, Fahmi delivered a keynote address at the forum titled 'Suara, Siber dan Sempadan: Merungkai Dinamika Kebebasan Media dalam Era Digital' forum at Universiti Utara Malaysia, here.
According to Fahmi, the incident is expected to be one of the topics discussed at the Cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
'Matters such as this will be discussed during the Cabinet meeting. However, we will first await the official report from the authorities. Based on the findings, we will determine the necessary course of action, including any enforcement measures which may be required.
'Anyway, we are currently awaiting the Cabinet meeting for the latest updates. Insya-Allah, a press conference will be held after the meeting, which I will personally oversee,' he said.
Yesterday's tragic incident involved a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The bus overturned following a collision at KM53 of the East-West Highway, near Tasik Banding, Gerik, claiming the lives of 15 students.
The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

Gerik bus crash: JPJ to open IP to take legal action against bus operator
GERIK — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is opening an investigation paper (IP) to take legal action against the operator of the bus involved in the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway (JRTB) last Monday, which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said legal action could be taken against the bus company concerned for failing to operate according to the stipulated rules and regulations. 'There have been past cases where we brought bus operators to court. Even though they were not the drivers, as the owners of the bus company, they too hold responsibilities. 'In this case, I think it is appropriate for JPJ to open an investigation paper and after that it will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action,' he said during a visit to the site of the tragedy here today. According to Loke , the bus company failed to comply with the mandatory components of the JPJ Inspection and Safety Audit (JISA). He said among the seven mandatory components of JISA include the need for a safety supervisor in the company and the installation of GPS to monitor vehicle speed. 'The GPS was not activated. Also, the maximum eight-hour driving limit must be adhered to by the driver, but this was not monitored by the company. 'Another is the requirement for a 30-minute break after every four hours of driving for the driver, GPS installed in all vehicles, having an emergency action plan and the company hotline…all of these components failed to be complied with,' he said. Earlier, Acting Gerik police chief DSP Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah said the owner of the bus company was at the Gerik District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 10.30 pm yesterday to give his statement. — BERNAMA

Fahmi: Social media platforms remove 159,518 harmful content
SOCIAL media platforms Facebook, TikTok and YouTube have agreed to remove 159,518 pieces of content related to online gambling, scams, cyberbullying and fake news as of yesterday, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the figure is part of 174,473 online content takedown requests made so far this year. 'Of the total, nearly 160,000 pieces of content have been taken down, with 51 per cent involving online gambling, 25 per cent scams, 12 per cent cyberbullying and nine per cent fake news. 'Of these, 57 per cent were on Facebook, 28 per cent on TikTok, and 13 per cent on YouTube. Other platforms involved smaller numbers, but these three alone represent nearly 95 per cent of the overall problems we are seeing on social media,' he said at the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly at Menara Komunikasi here today. Present were Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. Fahmi said that despite the ongoing efforts to remove such harmful content, there are growing concerns over the continued presence of child exploitation content online, particularly on Facebook. 'This raises the question of whether existing laws and cooperation are sufficient, or whether we need a more strategic and efficient approach to tackle the issue. 'We are aware that late last year, the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) conducted an integrated operation known as Op Pedo,' he said. On the government's move to implement a licensing framework for social media platforms earlier this year, Fahmi said the initiative aims to make digital platforms in Malaysia safer, especially for children. He added that the government's efforts have continued with the passing of the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 in Parliament last December, which will be enforced soon. 'For everyone's information, the OnSA has received royal assent from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and is currently in the process of being enforced,' he said. KUALA LUMPUR: The site of the tragic crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students along the East–West Highway is believed to have recently received new road markings, according to a video that has since gone viral. Posted by user @update11111 on social media platform X, the 60-second clip shows a man driving on the opposite lane of the accident site, pointing out newly painted road markings. "Line baru ada" ("There are new lines"), he remarks, suggesting the lines were freshly painted following the incident. The crash, which occurred at Km53 of the highway on Monday, involved a tour bus carrying 42 students and a Perodua Alza. Thirteen students were killed at the scene, while two others died later in hospital. In a separate post yesterday, actor and road safety advocate Azlan Sani Zawawi, popularly known as Lando Zawawi, commented that the lane where the bus overturned appeared to lack adequate road markings at the time of the incident. Other users, including one identified as Ahmad Syah, also raised concerns over the road's condition. "There are uneven surfaces, cracks, and signs of patchwork. The colour and texture of the tarmac are inconsistent, which suggests recent but uneven resurfacing," he said.
