Taoiseach 'shocked and saddened' after man dies and child injured in Carlow shooting incident

TAOISEACH Micheál Martin has said he is 'shocked and saddened' following a shooting incident at a shopping centre in Co. Carlow in which a man died and a child was injured. The incident unfolded shortly after 6.15pm at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre on Barrack Street. The area was cordoned off and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was dispatched, however, gardaí believe there is no further concern for public safety. A statement added that a 'white Irish male' was found deceased at the scene, while the injured girl did not require hospital treatment. "I am deeply shocked and saddened at the shooting incident in Carlow this evening," read a statement from the Taoiseach last night. "My thoughts are with the families affected and the local community in Carlow after what was a very serious and traumatic incident. "I urge anyone who has information to speak to the gardaí." Tánaiste Simon Harris praised the emergency services for their handling of the incident. "I am deeply concerned to hear about the incident that has taken place in Carlow tonight and have been kept briefed," he said. "I understand a young child has been hurt and I join with people across our country in thinking of them and their family tonight. "I am also thinking of all those who witnessed this situation and the awful shock and upset it must have caused them. "I know their families and communities will rally to support them. "I am grateful to our emergency services for their work and response." 'Something we never want or expect' Meanwhile, Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan stressed that such shooting incidents were thankfully rare in Ireland. "This was a really shocking incident," he said. "My thoughts are with everyone affected by the shooting and the community and families impacted including those working at the scene. "I would appeal to anyone who has any information to speak to the gardaí and help with their investigations in any way that they can. "This is something we never want or expect to happen in our communities. "Gun violence is very rare in Ireland, and I am determined that will remain the case. "The area in Carlow is safe. We must now allow An Garda Síochána to investigate this incident fully." In a statement last night, gardaí said it was unclear how the girl sustained her injuries. "Shortly after 6.15pm, gardaí were alerted following reports of a firearm discharge at Fairgreen Shopping Centre, Carlow," it read. "An Garda Síochána are currently at the scene, with the shopping centre and car park cordoned off. The cordon will remain in place overnight. "A white Irish adult male is deceased at the scene. "The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend. "A female juvenile received treatment from paramedics following the incident but did not require hospital care. "It's undetermined at this time as to how those injuries were sustained."

Michael Gaine's funeral to be held next weekend in Kenmare

Kerry farmer Michael Gaine will be laid to rest next weekend after a funeral Mass in his native Kenmare. Gardaí have returned his remains to his family following the completion of a postmortem. Mr Gaine's disappearance is being investigated by gardaí as suspected murder. Mr Gaine (56) was last seen alive on March 20th when his image was caught on CCTV footage at a shop in Kenmare. Gardaí believe he was murdered soon after this when he returned to his isolated farmyard at Carrig East, six kilometres from Kenmare town. READ MORE In late April gardaí upgraded their missing persons case to a homicide inquiry. On May 16th, human remains were found by his nephew while spreading slurry with a local agricultural contractor at the farm. Gardaí recovered Mr Gaine's dismembered remains from fields and a slurry tank. Following a postmortem by State Pathologist Dr Sally Anne Collis, the remains have been returned to Mr Gaine's family for the funeral next weekend. Mr Gaine is survived by his wife, Janice; sisters Noreen and Catherine; nieces Emma and Rachael; nephews Jamie and Mark; and brother-in-law Sean O'Regan. He will lie in repose at Finnegan's Funeral Home in Kenmare on Friday. His requiem Mass will take place at 10.30am on Saturday with a private family burial afterwards. His funeral notice on says he will be 'sadly missed and fondly remembered by his heartbroken wife', family and wide circle of friends in the farming and rallying community and beyond. Meanwhile, the Garda investigation into Mr Gaine's homicide is continuing following the arrest and release of a former US soldier, Michael Kelley (53), on May 17th for questioning about the death. He was released without charge after being held and questioned for 24 hours. Mr Kelley, who is from Maine, denies having any involvement in Mr Gaine's disappearance. Mr Kelley had been living alone at the old farmhouse at Carrig East, some five kilometres from where Mr Gaine lived, where he used to help out with farm work in return for accommodation. He is now living in Tralee.

Man who fired shots in Carlow shopping centre before he died was on bail for firearm offences

THE MAN AT the centre of the Fairgreen Shopping Centre shooting incident in Carlow last night was on bail for serious firearms offences. The man in his early 20s was before the courts last year when he was charged with offences associated with an assault rifle he bought on the dark web. The Heckler and Koch G3 rifle was seized along with a Remington M1911 handgun and multiple types of ammunition. He had since been charged with possession of other guns and with ammunition possession. He was arrested last year in Co Kildare by specialist gardaí from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, who were assisted by armed officers from the Emergency Response Unit. Advertisement He was set to hear a date for his trial, having appeared before court again last month. Sources have said that he went to the shopping centre armed on Sunday evening at around 6.15pm and fired a number of shots. It is believed that he was killed by his own firearm. The firearm found in Carlow yesterday is believed by gardaí to have been legally held. An Irish Defence Forces soldier (face blurred) at the scene in Carlow with a bomb disposal robot. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Gardaí from the Emergency Response Unit were tasked with raiding his house last night and were assisted by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) soldiers also. At the scene in Carlow, an EOD team assisted gardaí to search the man's remains because he had a bottle shaped object strapped to his body. That examination was ongoing last night. A garda spokesman confirmed a young girl received minor injuries in the incident but it is not known how she was injured.
