The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, has confirmed that the number of the deceased from the Eastern Cape floods has risen to 86.
The number of people rescued is 38. Search and Rescue teams are still on the ground recovering more bodies.
Mchunu and the National Commissioner of Saps, General Fannie Masemola, are in Mthatha today to assess police response and relief efforts to the floods.
While there, the minister appreciated the Saps members for assisting victims of the floods.
'On behalf of the department of police and the South African government, if it wasn't for this tragedy and the deaths, we would have said we are very proud of us for the work that you have done and the way in which you performed your duties.
'We can only say thank you very much and please continue to assist where you are called upon to assist. It is this that makes the government appear to people, lending a hand in their hour of need.'
The delegation will receive a briefing from the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape, Major General Kupiso and thereafter proceed on a walkabout to various sites affected by the devastating floods.

The police in Tonga confiscated dagga amounting to approximately R7 million in Sibange near Tonga, Mpumalanga, on Friday, 13 June 2025, following a high-speed chase with the Ehlanzeni District (Tonga Task Team). The task team was conducting a stop and search operation in the Sibange area when they stopped a grey VW Polo. However, the driver refused to stop, prompting a chase that went on for 10 kilometres. After the long chase, the suspect abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. Police recovered more than 20 compressed bags of dagga and confiscated the vehicle. 'The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle in the Khombaso area and fled into nearby bushes. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 24 compressed bags of dagga, believed to be worth millions of rand,' read the police statement. The SAPS urged anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts to contact the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or to submit tip-offs via the MYSAPS App. The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape, through Operation Vala Umgodi, has arrested eight suspects in connection with drugs. The eight suspects, aged between 24 and 49, were arrested during a multi-disciplinary, intelligence-driven operation conducted in the Frances Baard District. Operational teams discovered a significant quantity of abandoned dagga at the Beefmaster illegal mining site. Man commits suicide after daughter allegedly accuses him of rape
A man committed suicide after his daughter allegedly accused him of rape. According to information, the 45-year-old suspect started raping his daughter in 2017 when she was 17 years old. The victim disclosed the incidents to her mother in 2024. Disturbed by what her daughter told her, the mother separated from the suspect without reporting the matter to the police at the time. In 2025, the situation escalated when the suspect began harassing both the mother and his daughter at their place of residence, prompting the mother to open a case of rape at a police station. Before the suspect could be arrested, he called his relative on Thursday, 12 June 2025, to inform them that he had ingested poison after a rape case was opened against him. When emergency services and police responded, the suspect was already declared dead at the scene. The police in Leslie opened an inquest docket and investigations surrounding his death are still ongoing. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, urged the public to report sexual crimes immediately. Serial rapist, Japhta Pitsi David Mabitsela (32), was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment for harassing women and children in the Mankweng and Sebayeng policing areas. Between the years 2011 and 2021, Mabitsela targeted women and girls aged between 12 and 38 years. He would forcefully break into the victim's homes at night, attack them on the streets and would drag them to secluded areas in the bushes and rape them. Forensic investigation techniques used DNA evidence to link the suspect to other crimes he committed, and he was arrested in January 2024. The suspect was given an effective sentence of 25 years' imprisonment, with three years suspended for a period of five years. Five arrested in Durban for providing foreigners with fraudulent passports
The five will appear before the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday. Five people have been arrested in Durban by the Serious Corruption Investigation on Saturday in connection with the issuing of fake passports. They are facing charges of corruption, fraud, contravention of the Immigration Act, and contravention of the Identification Act. The arrests stem from a complaint from the Department of Home Affairs relating to the issuance of fraudulent passports to undocumented foreign nationals. Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Colonel Katlego Mogale stated that several arrest warrants have been secured and are being executed in relation to the complaint. Fraudulent passports She stated that the offences occurred between February 2020 and July 2023. 'A group of South African citizens allegedly facilitated the fraudulent acquisition of South African passports by foreign nationals at DHA offices in Durban, specifically the Commercial Street branch.' These unlawful activities occurred outside regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, when the Department of Home Affairs offices were officially closed. 'Preliminary investigations by the Department of Home Affairs confirmed that the criminal activities were indeed conducted off-hours, where local citizens offered R300 to R1,000 in exchange for their cooperation, especially at Department of Home Affairs offices in Isipingo, Durban Central, and Eshowe, resulting in a case being opened for investigation by the Serious Corruption Investigation.' The five people arrested on Saturday are scheduled to appear before the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday. 'The DPCI is not ruling out the possibility of more suspects being arrested.' EFF calls for treason charges The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has previously called for Home Affairs officials implicated in corruption to be charged with treason. The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs received briefings on several issues, including the Legal Aid Board's criteria for representing undocumented foreign nationals and a collaborative effort between Home Affairs and the Department of Social Development to support undocumented foreign minors. Home Affairs Deputy Director-General for Counter Corruption and Security, Conny Moitse, revealed a growing number of cases under investigation by the department.
