The 2025 ESSENCE Festival of Culture® presented by Coca-Cola® Evening Concert Series adds even more star power to an already stacked celebration of music's most profound icons, legends, and rising stars with a few surprises only found in person. Newly announced additions to the lineup includes Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Babyface, along with a curated Jill Scott and Friends set featuring three generations of Philly soul royalty: the Godmother, powerhouse vocalist Patti LaBelle, Grammy Award-winning R&B icon Jazmine Sullivan, and Jill herself – all together for one unforgettable night in New Orleans.
They join previously announced headliners including genre-defining R&B quartet Boyz II Men, chart-topping global sensation Davido, New Orleans' very own cultural architect Master P, andR&B icon Maxwell.
In true ESSENCE fashion, this year's celebration wouldn't be complete without space to honor the legends who laid the foundation for the sound of future generations. In an intentionally curated set, Songwriters Hall of Famer Jermaine Dupri will pay homage to the incomparable music titan Quincy Jones: a creative force whose fingerprints are etched into nearly every corner of modern music, from jazz and funk to hip-hop, soul, and pop. The ' ESSENCE Flowers' tribute, a QUINCY JONES JOINT, will bring together artists whose own work reflects the reach of his legacy.
This genre-spanning performance features artists whose collaborations and creative choices reflect Quincy's far-reaching influence. R&B icon Tyrese, who appeared on a modern rendition of 'Secret Garden', and R&B trailblazer Al B. Sure!, who was mentored by the music titan in the early stages of his career and featured on the original, a slow jam classic produced by Quincy himself. Chart-topping crooner Robin Thicke, who worked with Jones on a reimagined version of 'P.Y.T.', nods to Quincy's genre-blending brilliance. Platinum-selling trio SWV, not only collaborated with Quincy directly on the smooth, groove-heavy track 'Slows Jams', but famously flipped one of his most iconic productions in their signature hit "Right Here (Human Nature Remix)'. R&B group Xscape, whose harmonies carry echoes of Jones' influence on vocal arrangement, also sampled Quincy's work on their track 'Keep On, Keepin' On'. West Coast rap icons The Pharcyde and Queensbridge legends Mobb Deep, also sampled Quincy's catalog, proving his influence reached well beyond jazz, R&B, and pop, embedding itself into the DNA of hip-hop across generations and regions.
While the ESSENCE Festival of Culture® presented by Coca-Cola® will honor legends from around the world, one of the most influential chapters in our story began in our forever home. This year, Master P returns to the stage for his final performance. A defining moment for the New Orleans mogul, whose influence turned No Limit Records into a cultural force by rewriting the rules of ownership in hip-hop. He will be joined by the No Limit Soldiers, including Mia X, the first lady of No Limit Records and his brother Silkk the Shocker, whose signature flow helped to define the label's sound. Also joining the set are Grammy Award-winning group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, whose melodic rapid-fire delivery paralleled No Limit's boundary-pushing energy with R&B mainstays Dru Hill, whose gospel-rooted vocals brought edge to R&B, and chart-topping singer-songwriter Keri Hilson, whose career reflects the label's spirit of self-made, Southern-rooted spirit.
Every moment will be a dedication to our artistry and culture. After a highly anticipated return, the iconic Superlounge experience is back. Reimagined, reenergized, and ready to remind fans why some of the Festival's most unforgettable moments have happened on its most intimate stage.
Rounding out this year's multigenerational, genre-spanning lineup are Grammy Award-winning visionary Erykah Badu, melodic singer and songwriter Ari Lennox, rising R&B trio Psiryn, Afrobeats sensation MOLIY, and hip-hop's ultimate showman Doug E. Fresh. The original human beatbox will lead a special on-stage tribute honoring ESSENCE Magazine's 55th anniversary, blending freestyle and his signature energy to honor the songs defining the culture.
Additional performers include reggae legend Buju Banton, Grammy Award-nominated superstar GloRilla, the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Isley Brothers, lyrical legend Nas, soulful standout Summer Walker, beloved R&B singer and songwriter Donell Jones, and multifaceted hitmaker Muni Long.

'Doctor Who' season finale surprises fans with an exit — and a familiar face

LONDON -- A familiar face to 'Doctor Who' fans is rejoining the long-running British sci-fi series as Ncuti Gatwa exits the lead role after two seasons. In Saturday's season finale, Gatwa's Time Lord regenerated and fans got a glimpse of Billie Piper, who played the character Rose Tyler for 35 episodes between 2005 and 2013. Tyler was a companion to versions of the doctor played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. Producers are keeping Piper's new role secret — for now. 'Just how and why she is back remains to be seen,' the BBC said in a statement after the finale aired. 'It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the TARDIS, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told,' showrunner Russell T Davies said in a statement. Piper said 'Doctor Who' has provided some of her best memories and she couldn't pass up the opportunity to come back. 'It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return ... but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see,' she said. If Piper does indeed become the Doctor, she would be the third woman to fill the famous shoes. The Rwanda-born, Scotland-raised Gatwa, 29, was the first Black actor to helm the show, but he wasn't the first Black Doctor — Jo Martin played 'Fugitive Doctor' in several episodes. Gatwa took over the role from Jodie Whittaker in 2023. Whittaker was the 13th Doctor — and the first woman to play the central galaxy-hopping, extraterrestrial Time Lord who regenerates into new bodies, taking over from Peter Capaldi in 2017. Martin was the second woman.

Guitarist , known for his work with The McCoy's and hit song 'Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,' died in Ormond Beach Florida on Monday, May 26. Shooting to fame at just 17 years old when The McCoy's dropped 'Hang On Sloopy" in 1965, the legendary rocker collected a Grammy Award for producing 'Weird Al ' Yankovic's debut album over his decades long career. Derringer worked with several other iconic artists in various capacities serving as a producer for Cyndi Lauper, rocked the solo on 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' by Bonnie Tyler, and even did session work for Steely Dan. Fellow artist and alleged caretaker Tony Wilson made the heartbreaking announcement on Facebook the morning after his passing."To my rocking best friend Rick Derringer it was my pleasure to be with your caretaker was a natural thing..." Derringer had a remarkable "behind the scenes" resume. He had a hand in several beloved albums playing guitar with artists spanning genres from Barbera Streisand to Kiss. Derringer even left a mark on the World Wrestling Federation, producing their 'The Wrestling Album,' comprised of wrestler's theme songs that he also happened to work on. In fact, his hit "Real American" served as Hulk Hogan's iconic song. Many artists flooded social media with adoring memories of the late artist amid the news of his passing. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Cyndi Lauper recalled some of the incredible work they did together: "He was one of the great guitarists," she stated. "I co-wrote with him on my Blue Angel album. And we did wrestling music together which was so much fun. He played for me when I sang with Patti LaBelle on her special. He was in the band when I toured for True Colors in 86. And he's is also in the live at Le Zénith Paris video. We shared a lot of special moments together. Rest easy my friend." Beatles legend Ringo Starr also paid a beautiful homage to his fallen friend. "God bless Rick Derringer," he wrote on Instagram. "It was great playing with him in the All Starrs. I send peace and love to his family." And the love for Derringer doesn't stop there. In a recent Facebook post, Wilson noted his intention to honor the late artist on his birthday, August 5th, with a tribute show in Florida. Nothing has officially been scheduled as of yet.
