Thug Life box office advance booking: Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam's film sells tickets worth Rs 14 crore; surpasses PS-2

Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan are all set to reunite 38 years after their cult crime thriller Nayakan. However, if the advance booking of Thug Life is anything to go by, the buzz is lower than that of their recent individual hits. The advance booking picked up significantly on the eve of the release though. As Thug Life hits the cinemas today in the native Tamil language and in the dubbed Telugu and Hindi versions, it's sold maximum tickets in Tamil at Rs 5.3 crore. These include Rs 5.25 crore in the 2D version, Rs 11.63 lakh in the IMAX 2D version, and Rs 70,470 in the 4DX version. As per Sacnilk, the Hindi version has sold tickets worth Rs 26 lakh and the Telugu version has registered an advance booking of Rs 54 lakh. While all versions add up to Rs 6.16 crore, combined with the block seat booking, the total advance sales of Thug Life before its release stands at Rs 13.89 crore. This figure has surpassed the advance sales of Ratnam's last directorial, the 2023 hit period drama Ponniyin Selvan: II (Rs 11 crore), although the first part had a greater advance booking number (Rs 18.95 crore). Similarly, Thug Life has come close to the advance sales of Haasan's 2022 blockbuster action thriller Vikram (Rs 15.3 crore), but it's still shy of that of Haasan's last release, S Shankar's vigilante drama Indian 2 (Rs 17.9 crore) last year. Thug Life doesn't have much competition at the box office this week, which is why its numbers are likely to pick up over the weekend. In the Hindi market, it'll compete with Tarun Mansukhani's whodunit comedy Housefull 5, starring an ensemble led by Akshay Kumar. The box office collection of Thug Life would also be affected by it not releasing in Karntaka owing to an ongoing row between the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) and Haasan over his recent statement that suggesting that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil.' After the KFCC claimed they wouldn't let the film release in the state till Haasan apologises, Haasan moved Karnataka High Court on Tuesday. The producers of the movie informed the court they are not willing to screen the movie in Karnataka, unless there is a dialogue or a trialogue involving the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. The court also strongly criticised Haasan for his recent remark and observed a 'single apology could have resolved the situation.' After Madan Lal, another 1983 World Cup winner slams RCB, calls Bengaluru stampede tragedy a 'deadly welcome'

Legendary India wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani has voiced his dismay over the tragic stampede that marred Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL title celebration at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, calling it a 'deadly welcome' for the newly crowned champions. The 1983 World Cup winner also drew a stark contrast between the controlled, grounded fandom of his playing days and the frenzied following seen in the IPL era. The victory event, jointly held by the RCB management and the Karnataka government, turned fatal as massive, unregulated crowds overwhelmed the venue's security capacity. At least 11 people lost their lives, and nearly 50 were injured in the chaos. Kirmani, deeply moved by the tragedy, questioned both the timing and the management of the celebrations. "My condolences to bereaved families. This was a deadly welcome to IPL champions. In our times, there was no such media hype and there was no TV and there was no such thing which could lead to such things," Kirmani told India Today. Kirmani, who represented India in 88 Test matches, felt that the felicitation of RCB's maiden IPL triumph could have waited a little longer, allowing for better planning and crowd control. He stressed that such an important moment should not have been rushed. "On that count, I suppose if RCB waited for 17 (18) years to become champions and organisers, whosoever it may be, could have waited for a while for things to settle down and then organise a show to felicitate these great heroes of RCB." Madan Lal had earlier bashed RCB for not waiting a little longer to organise the title celebrations. The former wicketkeeper didn't shy away from questioning the intensity of today's cricket fandom, highlighting how the game's changing nature has led to situations previously unheard of. "The fans of our times were not as crazy as fans of today, and especially in the IPL, the crazy fans are unimaginable, particularly as you could see lakhs and lakhs were around just to get a glimpse of these great heroes," said Kirmani. He further posed a thought-provoking question on whether the same crowd would have shown up if Karnataka had won the Ranji Trophy, suggesting that the growing glamour and media spectacle around the IPL has fundamentally altered how fans connect with the sport.
