Fort Stewart is a U.S. Army post located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah in the Hinesville metropolitan area. What we know about Fort Stewart Fort Stewart trains, deploys and mobilizes Army units and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division, according to the Department of Defense. The April 2020 census recorded about 8,821 people living within Fort Stewart, including students, active military members, military retirees and family members. It employs thousands of civilians and servicemembers in the area and is considered a major community hub containing schools, medical centers, living quarters and recreational areas. The fort is named after Brigadier General Daniel Stewart, a Revolutionary War figure, and its beginnings trace back to a 1940 purchase of land just outside Hinesville for an anti-aircraft artillery training center.
