Xi Has 'Bowed To Reality,' Says China Analyst, Urges More Engagement Between Leaders To Resolve Trade Issues: 'No Substitute For Direct Negotiations With Trump'

As U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping break the ice with a phone call after months of silence, analysts weigh in on what's in store for the U.S.-China trade. What Happened: The U.S. and China have been at odds over trade for a considerable period. The call signifies some advancement in establishing ground rules for a potential meeting. Jeremy Chan, Senior China Analyst at the Eurasia Group consultancy, stated that this communication suggests a level of respect from President Trump towards President Xi, reported The South China Morning Post. Trending: Start investing with eToro's CopyTrader — . However, analysts have noted that more than optimistic statements are required to resolve the deeply rooted trade differences between the two nations. Chan further noted that Xi typically consents to meetings with foreign leaders only after substantial groundwork has been laid through lower-level diplomatic efforts. "Xi has bowed to reality, like so many other foreign leaders before him, that there is no substitute for direct negotiations with Trump," stated Chan, who is also a former U.S. diplomat. On the other hand, ASPI's Wendy Cutler highlighted the complexity of the upcoming trade talks and the challenges. "The likelihood of further misunderstandings, coupled with a fundamental lack of trust, will present enormous challenges for the negotiators as they try to hammer out a deal," cautioned It Matters: This phone call comes in the wake of escalating trade tensions between the two countries. On Thursday, U.S. stocks dipped following reports of a phone call between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, signaling a possible thaw in China trade tensions. The outreach was said to have come from the U.S. side, as per CNBC, citing Chinese state media. Earlier in May, President Trump had expressed his willingness to travel to China to meet with President Xi Jinping, emphasizing the importance of the U.S.-China relationship. In early May, the South China Morning Post reported that the U.S. and China are struggling to resume trade talks. China suggested using special envoys, but the U.S. prefers direct talks between Trump and Xi—a move China considers 'risky and uncertain.' This latest phone call could be seen as a step towards that potential meeting, and a move towards resolving the trade disputes. Sprouting Gear Inc. Founder Paul Pluss Announces Report on:

'The Unintended Consequences of the AI Race on the Livestock Industry' RAMONA, Calif., June 07, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The U.S. livestock industry, already grappling with rising feed costs and shrinking herd sizes, now faces a fast-approaching and under-recognized threat: the massive expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure—especially data centers—and its impact on water availability, says Paul Pluss, a veteran livestock rancher and researcher focused on the intersection of agriculture, water policy, and emerging infrastructure demands. 'The water usage of data centers operated by Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Amazon remains largely unrecognized by agricultural stakeholders. Prime location for data centers is the same hot dry inland location preferred for feedlots and are often sharing the same aquifers and rivers" said Pluss. Fueled by public and private investment in AI infrastructure, the number of U.S. data centers is expected to grow from 5,426 today to more than 8,378 within five years. Many existing facilities are also expanding. These data centers—crucial for powering AI models, cloud computing, and digital services—require enormous amounts of water to cool their servers. Key figures: Each data center can consume up to 5 million gallons of water per day for cooling. Average water usage per megawatt of electricity is estimated at 6 to 7 million gallons. U.S. data center power demand is currently 35 gigawatts and rising. Annual electricity usage by data centers is expected to nearly triple, from 224 terawatt-hours today to 606 terawatt-hours within five years. Based on current and projected growth, total water use by U.S. data centers could exceed 15 trillion gallons annually—equivalent to more than 46 million acre-feet of water per year (calculated on the well-documented 5M gallons/day per center, prior to new expansions). This level of water consumption rivals agricultural water use in major farming states and could soon surpass the entire livestock industry's combined water footprint, including feed crop irrigation, drinking water, and processing needs. Is American Express Worth Buying Right Now?

American Express is a well-run financial giant. The company's target audience is highly resilient to economic hardship. Is the strength of this business model enough to make it a buy? 10 stocks we like better than American Express › American Express (NYSE: AXP) is one of the stocks owned by Warren Buffett within Berkshire Hathaway's stock portfolio. That fact alone is enough to get some investors to buy the stock. However, you really need to consider other factors, like the business behind the stock, as well as its price tag. Here's a look at whether American Express is worth buying right now. American Express is a financial giant, acting largely as a payment processor. The company's logo adorns credit cards that get used in retail establishments and online. Each transaction generates fee income for American Express. It issues its own cards, too, so it generates card/membership fees directly from customers there, as well. One differentiation between American Express and its peers is that Amex, as it is often called, focuses on more affluent customers. Wealthier consumers tend to be more resilient during economic downturns. Basically, they have the money to keep spending even as less affluent consumers hunker down. That means that Amex's business will usually perform relatively well during recessions and other periods of economic uncertainty. So far, 2025 has been filled with uncertainty. From tariff fights to stock market corrections, the news has been filled with negative headlines. In fact, American Express' stock price fell along with the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) earlier in the year. And it has recovered along with the index as well, as investors regained confidence. What's notable, however, is that American Express' price moves have been more dramatic than the market's moves. That's an interesting sign, since it could mean that Amex's stock has more recovery potential ahead of it. Given the strength of its business model, that isn't an unreasonable assessment. However, there's also a negative way to view the price swing. It could very well be that investors got overly enthusiastic about the business and bid the price up to unrealistic levels earlier in the year. And the return toward those levels just indicates that investors are, again, being overzealous with their expectations. A look at traditional valuation metrics, perhaps unfortunately, suggests the second explanation is the more likely one. American Express' price-to-sales ratio is currently around 3.1, compared to a five-year average of 2.6. The price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is currently about 20.5, versus a longer-term average of just under 19. And the price-to-book value ratio is 6.6 today, compared to a five-year average of roughly 5. All three metrics suggest that American Express is expensive today. And they are buttressed by a nontraditional valuation tool: dividend yield, which falls as share price rises. American Express' dividend yield is about 1.1% today. Not only is that less than the already miserly 1.3% yield you could collect from the S&P 500 index, but it is also near the lowest levels of the past decade. Again, the direction is pretty clear: Amex looks expensive. There's a reason Warren Buffett owns American Express. It is a well-run business with some clear advantages over its peers. Buffett didn't just buy Amex -- he's owned it for many years. And sticking with a good company is part of Buffett's investment approach. However, Buffett's mentor, Benjamin Graham, made an important observation that investors looking at American Express today should heed: Even great companies can be bad investments if you pay too much for them. And it looks like American Express is too expensive right now.
