'9th Time In 20 Days': Jairam Ramesh Asks PM Modi To 'Speak Up' On Trump's Ceasefire Claims

On Friday, Trump reiterated that he had stopped India and Pakistan from engaging in a full-blown conflict and averted a nuclear confrontation
The Congress is at it again. Two days after questioning the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Donald Trump's claims of having brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the Grand Old Party once again asked PM Modi to 'speak up" as the US President repeated his assertions.
On Friday, Trump reiterated that he had stopped India and Pakistan from engaging in a full-blown conflict and averted a nuclear confrontation.
'We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned out into a nuclear disaster, and I want to thank the leaders of India and Pakistan, and I want to thank my people.
'Also, we talk trade, and we say we can't trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons. They're great leaders in those countries, and they understood and they agreed, and that all stopped, and we're stopping others from fighting. Also, because ultimately, we can fight better than anybody, we have the greatest military in the world. We have the greatest leaders in the world…"
The US President's statement gave fresh ammo to the Congress, with party MP Jairam Ramesh saying it was the '9th time in 20 days" that Trump had repeated the sequence of events but the prime minister had maintained silence on the issue.
This is the 9th time in 20 days, across 3 countries and 3 cities. 'This is the 9th time in 20 days, across 3 countries and 3 cities. Donaldbhai keeps repeating the same sequence of events of how he got the 4-Day India-Pakistan war to stop – US intervention and the use of the trade instrument to stop nuclear escalation. The equivalence of India and Pakistan gets reiterated yet again. President Trump's Commerce Secretary has made exactly the same claims in his submission to the New York-based Court of International Trade on May 23rd. But Donaldbhai's friend Mr. Narendra Modi continues to ignore his claims with absolute silence. Why doesn't the PM speak up?" Ramesh asked on X.
This is not the first time Ramesh has trained his guns on the government's radio silence on the issue. Earlier, the Congress leader said: 'Our Prime Minister does not want to hear about tariffs; our Prime Minister only wants to hear 'Tareef' (praise). So, the PM is silent on this. The Prime Minister has not said anything."
He also slammed the US President for hyphenating India and Pakistan, saying: 'India's economy has increased 10 times in comparison to Pakistan's economy, but both of them have come in the same boat. How can this happen?"
THE CEASEFIRE
India, in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, pounding terror launchpads linked to outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad in Pakistan and PoK and killing more than 100 terrorists.
A rattled Pakistan responded with attempts to launch a military action, resorting to cross-border shelling, drone assaults, and even military strikes. However, India's air defence system and armed forces thwarted these attempts.
After four days of intense cross-border fighting, India and Pakistan arrived at a ceasefire understanding on May 10, with Trump announcing the truce.
WHAT TRUMP SAID
The US President had claimed that India and Pakistan agreed to reach a 'full and immediate" ceasefire after mediated talks, claiming that he used 'trade to a large extent" to broker the ceasefire.
'I said let's make a deal, let's do some trading. Let's not trade nuclear missiles. Let's trade the things you make so beautifully. And they both have very powerful leaders, strong leaders and it all stopped. Hopefully it will remain that way," he had said.
However, the external affairs ministry slammed Trump's offer to mediate on Kashmir and his claim of having used trade to prevent a 'nuclear war", saying that the military action under Operation Sindoor was 'entirely in the conventional domain".
While addressing a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, 'I refer to you the position made clear on May 13. From the time Operation Sindoor commenced on May 7, the issue of trade or tariff did not come up in any of these discussions. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar had also clarified it was established directly through DGMOs."

‘Can't afford to dwell on them now': What Shashi Tharoor said on speaking to colleagues as Congress critique mounts

In the middle of a diplomatic mission to project India's zero-tolerance stance on terrorism, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor finds himself at the centre of a political storm within his party for praising the Modi government's military strikes in Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. Tharoor's remarks, delivered during his tour of Brazil, Panama, and other nations, expose the divide in the Congress, which has accused the government of bypassing the party in these crucial foreign delegations. When asked about his party's continuing critique, Tharoor, leading one of the seven Indian delegations sent abroad, told journalists in Brazil, 'I think this is a time now for us to focus on our mission. Undoubtedly, in a thriving democracy, there are bound to be comments and criticisms, but I think at this point we can't afford to dwell on them. When we get back to India, no doubt we'll have our chance to speak to our colleagues, critics, media there. But right now we're focused on the countries we're coming to and getting the message out to the people here.' #WATCH | Brasilia, Brazil: When asked about criticism and questions raised by Congress, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor says, 'I think this is a time now for us to focus on our mission. Congress had suggested leaders like Anand Sharma and Gaurav Gogoi, but the government handpicked Tharoor instead. His backing and endorsement of India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 has not gone down well with sections of the Congress. Speaking to the Indian-American community last week in New York, Tharoor said, 'I don't work for the government, as you know. I work for an opposition party. But I myself authored an op-ed in one of India's leading papers, the Indian Express, within a couple of days, saying the time had come to hit hard but hit smart. And I'm pleased to say that's exactly what India did.' In Panama, Tharoor underlined India's readiness to hit back at terrorism: 'What has changed in recent years is that the terrorists have also realised they will have a price to pay. On that, let there be no doubt.' He pointed to India's past actions, noting, 'We have struck at the Punjabi heartland of Pakistan by hitting terror bases, training centres, terror headquarters in nine places.' His comments have drawn the ire of Congress colleagues back home. Senior leader Jairam Ramesh labelled the government's decision to include Tharoor and others in the delegations without consultation as 'regrettable' and a sign of 'cheap political games.' 'The INC will not stoop to the pathetic level of the PM and the BJP,' Ramesh had said in a post on X days ago, making it clear that Tharoor's views did not represent the Congress line. Even party spokesperson Pawan Khera joined the chorus recently, sharing a critical excerpt from Tharoor's book 'The Paradoxical Prime Minister' on social media to mock his current position. I genuinely have better things to do. Goodnight.'

Congress urges Odisha CM to set up SIT to probe assault against Catholic priests

The Congress on Sunday demanded to set up a special investigation team to probe the alleged assault on two Catholic priests, including a 90-year-old Keralite, in Sambalpur district of Odisha . AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal sent a letter to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi urging him to set up a SIT to probe the reported incident. The assault allegedly happened in the early hours of May 23 at a boys hostel in that state. This is the latest incident in a series of attacks against Christians in BJP-ruled states , Venugopal alleged in a statement issued here. The Alappuzha MP said it is unfortunate that such violence is becoming a recurring story in the state. Live Events The incident of the priests being brutally assaulted in a boys hostel was a blow to human conscience, he alleged. Urging the Odisha government to take stringent action against the culprits in the incident, the AICC general secretary said such violence not only violates the fundamental rights of individuals but also threatens the communal harmony and peace that our country values. In a letter to the Odisha CM , K C Venugopal also requested that the constitutional rights of Christian priests and employees be protected. Immediate steps should be taken to prevent such incidents in the future, he urged in the letter. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan also strongly condemned the incident. He also visited the assaulted priests at a private hospital in Manjummel in Ernakulam district on Sunday. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

'Track Every Word, React Calmly': Kremlin's New Playbook On Trump's Outbursts

The Kremlin noted that Moscow is also "carefully tracking" Trump's comments directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin against the backdrop of the Ukraine war. Amid the ongoing exchange between President Donald Trump and Russian officials, the Kremlin on Sunday said Russia should 'react calmly" to all US statements. It further noted that Moscow is also 'carefully tracking" Trump's comments directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin against the backdrop of the Ukraine war. 'But any responses must be with Russia's interests in mind and in the interest of repairing Russia-US relations," the Kremlin stated, as quoted by RT. In recent days, Trump has posted on social media that Russian President Vladimir Putin has gone 'absolutely CRAZY" and warned he was 'playing with fire" by continuing attacks on Ukrainian cities. Meanwhile, Moscow has responded cautiously, even as it carries out deadly strikes on Kyiv, warning Trump against an 'emotional overload" and stating that the only truly bad outcome would be 'WWIII." Lawmakers from both parties have used this change in tone to urge Trump to back his words with tougher sanctions on Russia. However, experts say it's still uncertain whether he will follow up his strong statements with concrete action. advetisement 'We're going to find out whether he's tapping us along or not. And if he is, we'll respond a little bit differently. But it will take about a week and a half, two weeks," Trump told reporters on Wednesday, when asked whether he believed Putin wanted to end the war. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 after building up troops near the border for weeks. Since then, tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides have been killed in over three years of fighting.
