Al Wusta signs RO4.4mn deals for development projects
Haima – Al Wusta governorate has signed a series of agreements for development projects across its wilayats, with investments exceeding RO4.4mn, aimed at advancing infrastructure and community services.
The agreements were signed on Monday by Sheikh Ahmed bin Muslim al Kathiri, Governor of Al Wusta, in coordination with relevant implementing agencies on Monday.
In Haima, a Knowledge Park will be established at a cost of RO495,000 to serve as a cultural and recreational centre. An exhibition ground will be constructed with an investment of RO300,000, while RO248,000 has been allocated for a camel racing track, supporting Oman's traditional sports heritage.
Urban beautification projects include upgrading the façade of Abu Mazabi village for RO221,000. A solar-powered lighting project for 60 service stations in Haima, Mahout, and Duqm will be implemented at a cost of RO92,400. Additionally, 100 lighting poles will be supplied and installed in Mahout at a cost of RO153,000.
In Duqm, the façade of Dhahr village will be developed with an investment of RO608,000, while Ras Madrakah village will see enhancements costing more than RO537,000.
Two public parks were planned – one in Dhahr village (RO208,000) and another in Sarab village, Mahout (RO161,000).
Infrastructure works include the design and construction of the 17km Hitam al Barr Road at an estimated RO909,000 and the phase one development of Wadi Dharif in Duqm for RO148,000. In the sports sector, football stadiums will be developed in Hitam village (RO98,000) and the wilayat of Al Jazir (RO104,000).

Nama expands water network in Al Wusta
HAIMA: Nama Water Services is rolling out a series of vital water infrastructure projects across Al Wusta Governorate to ensure sustainable supply for local communities. Eng Ahmed bin Hamoud al Rawahi, Director of Operations and Maintenance for Al Wusta, said that a key project underway in Al Lakbi (Wilayat of Al Jazir) includes 18.5 km of pipeline and 250 household connections. The initiative, costing over RO 300,000, will benefit about 1,300 residents and is due for completion this year. Additionally, three projects have been awarded for the Wilayat of Mahout, covering the areas of Najda, Khalouf and Sarab. Spanning a total of 66 km and comprising 1,000 connections, these projects are set to serve around 5,000 people at a combined cost of RO 1.5 million. Completion is expected by early 2027. In another development, Nama Wastewater Services has signed an agreement to build a desalination plant and distribution network in southern Ghubrah (Wilayat of Al Jazir), in collaboration with Petroleum Development Oman. This project will serve about 170 homes, benefitting nearly 1,000 people, with a total investment of RO 500,000. Design work begins this year and construction is slated for 2026 under a three-year implementation plan. Dhofar youth contest offers RO11,000 in cash prizes
Muscat – Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth has launched the second edition of the Qeemah competition under the theme 'Innovation in Local Industries' in cooperation with Dhofar Governor's Office. The competition aims to encourage young people in Dhofar to develop creative, non-traditional solutions to modern challenges in alignment with Oman's economic diversification goals under Vision 2040. Mohammed Abdullah Batmira, Director of Qeemah, said this year's competition is divided into two main categories – one for entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and the second for high school students. 'The competition includes several stages, such as training workshops and an 'ideas race', culminating in an awards ceremony on May 22 with cash prizes of up to RO11,000 for the top three entries. Winning projects will be mentored till August 2025.' According to Batmira, the competition aims to generate local added value by tapping into Dhofar's natural resources, traditional crafts and economic potential. 'The goal is to help participants turn their ideas into viable projects – whether technical, entrepreneurial or industrial – and reach regional and international markets.' Batmira informed that teams of up to five members can participate, and entries must be original, practical and clearly presented in a concise concept note. Ideas must not have been previously registered as intellectual property. The Qeemah competition is part of Oman's broader push to support innovation and entrepreneurship, particularly among its younger population, as the sultanate diversifies its economy beyond oil.

Nakhal court slaps RO3,000 fine on car dealer for contract breach
Muscat – The Primary Court in Nakhal has fined a commercial establishment RO3,000 and terminated a vehicle purchase contract following a consumer complaint over a delayed and defective car delivery. In a complaint filed by a woman with the Consumer Protection Department in Barka, she stated that she purchased a 2022 model year used vehicle from a dealer for RO14,450 with delivery scheduled for January 25, 2025. However, the dealer not only failed to deliver the vehicle on time but supplied a different model with multiple defects despite the delay. Following the complaint, the matter was referred to the Public Prosecution and then to the court, which found three defendants guilty of two misdemeanours – failing to provide the agreed service and failing to disclose the vehicle's condition in the contract or invoice. Each defendant was fined RO500 for each offence, resulting in a total fine of RO3,000. The court also ordered the dealer to refund the full amount paid by the consumer (RO14,450), compensate the customer an additional RO500 and cover all legal expenses. Consumer Protection Authority reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumer rights and warned that it would continue to take strict legal action against violators. It also urged all commercial establishments to adhere to applicable laws and regulations to avoid similar legal action.
