
Sweeping vehicle recalls hit SA — from airbag ruptures to brake failures and battery fires
South African car owners are urged to check their vehicles after 7,000 recalls were announced by the National Consumer Commission this week.
Seven brands are affected by the South African vehicle recalls, including Jeep, Chrysler, Citroën, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW and Volvo. Issues range from rupturing airbags and battery fires to defective brakes and seatbelts.
While recall notices are not unusual, these stand out for breadth and the continued fallout from the long-running Takata airbag scandal that has triggered more than 100 million global recalls since 2008.
Based on publicly available sales data, the recalls could affect more than 7,000 vehicles on South African roads and are likely to be more due to incomplete reporting on premium brands such as Mercedes-Benz.
What is being recalled, and how many cars this could affect in SA:
Takata's legacy: Jeep and Chrysler
Stellantis South Africa confirmed the recall of two models:
Jeep Wrangler (2014-2016)
Chrysler 300C (2014-2016)
The problem? Defective front passenger airbags manufactured by the now-defunct Takata Corporation. The airbag inflator may rupture under normal deployment pressure, sending metal shrapnel through the cabin. The risk: 'serious injury or death', according to the supplier.
Estimated SA sales
Jeep Wrangler: about 1,800 units
Chrysler 300C: about 1,500 units
Consumers are advised to book an immediate replacement at any authorised dealership. While most affected models are nearly a decade old, many remain on the road, and the risk persists with every drive.
Citroën's quiet danger
Also linked to Takata inflators, the Citroën C4, DS4 and DS5 models (2009-2016) are being recalled. The rupture risk here applies to both driver and passenger airbags, with similarly catastrophic outcomes if the inflator bursts.
Estimated SA sales
About 1,500 units.
The recall covers vehicles distributed over an eight-year period, long enough for second- or third-hand owners to be unaware they're driving a risky vehicle.
Mercedes-Benz: brakes under pressure
Mercedes-Benz South Africa is recalling:
CLA (C118, 2020-2023)
S-Class (W223, 2020-2023)
The CLA's issue lies in the rear brake hose length. Improper fitting may cause contact, wear and eventually leakage. The flagship S-Class, meanwhile, may suffer front brake fluid leaks in hot or humid environments after prolonged use.
No confirmed SA sales data is available. However, both models remain key parts of Mercedes' upper-segment offering and are likely to number in the thousands.
Audi's EV fire hazard
Audi SA has recalled 46 units of its high-performance electric sports car, the e-tron GT, covering vehicles produced from October 2021.
The problem lies in high-voltage battery modules with 'technical irregularities' that may lead to overheating and, in the worst case, spontaneous fire.
'Acute fire hazard… severe or fatal injuries… significant property damage,' reads the formal recall language.
It's an ominous signal for EV safety debates, especially as e-tron GTs retail north of R3-million.
VW Polo Sedan: seatbelt shortcomings
Volkswagen is recalling 905 Polo Sedans sold nationally from April 2025 onward. The rear seatbelt latch plates, it says, were 'produced with insufficient hardness'. In a collision or hard braking, they may fail to restrain occupants properly, increasing the risk of injury.
In March 2025 alone, 423 Polo Sedans were sold, suggesting a fast-growing roll-out of potentially defective units.
VW has urged owners to visit any authorised dealership to have the component inspected and replaced.
Volvo XC90: battery overheating risks
Volvo SA is recalling 27 units of its flagship XC90 (2020-2022), citing a fault that could cause the high-voltage battery to overheat when fully charged. In a worst-case scenario, this may lead to a 'thermal event' – industry-speak for internal battery fire.
While the numbers are small, the reputational risk for premium EV brands such as Volvo remains significant, particularly in a competitive SUV segment.
Safety in the shadow of legacy tech
At the core of several of these recalls is the long tail of the Takata airbag crisis – an industrial failure that continues to endanger lives nearly two decades later. Despite global awareness campaigns, many drivers remain unaware that their vehicles even carry the risk.
Newer vehicles are not immune. As EV adoption grows, high-voltage battery faults are fast becoming the next frontier of automotive safety risk, with thermal events now drawing as much concern as fuel tank ruptures once did.

Book your car into an authorised dealership immediately – repairs are free under consumer protection law.

An official announcement confirming the facelift Sportage for South Africa is yet to be made. Facelift Sportage incorporates a revised front facia and new alloy wheels up to 19-inches. Image: Kia Shown in North American guise at the Los Angeles International Auto Show at the end of last year, Kia has taken the wraps off of the facelift Sportage the United Kingdom which provides the likely biggest indication of what the South African-market version could look like. New outside On-sale in the island kingdom from the third quarter of this year, the internally named NQ5 Sportage's first revision since its world debut four years ago consists of a new front bumper, redesigned headlights and daytime running diodes, a tweaked Tiger Nose grille and new alloy wheels ranging from 17-inches to 19-inches on GT-Line models. Subtly new inside Inside, the Sportage gets the same steering wheel as the electric EV models and the Tasman bakkie, as well as newly designed air vents that now run flush across the width of the dashboard. Interior changes include a new steering wheels and redesigned air vents. A traditional lever on automatic variants also continues as Kia still offers the Sportage with a manual gearbox. Upgraded materials and upholstery colours, including a first-time two-tone on GT-Line grades, and a new optional Head-Up Display round the interior's changes off. Up front On the power front, the UK-spec Sportage continues to offer a choice of two engines; the 1.6 T-GDI rated at 110 kW, and a hybrid that combines the same engine with an electric motor and battery pack for a total output of 175 kW. Transmissions for the former are either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch, with the hybrid having sole access to a unique six-speed automatic. Changes to the rear are subtle. By comparison, the US Sportage has three engine options; a normally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol pumping-out 140 kW, a 1.6-litre hybrid developing 170 kW and a plug-in hybrid that combines the 1.6 with an electric motor and battery pack for a total system output of 200 kW. Confirmation awaited Priced from $28 690 in the United States, which equates to a directly converted R510 628, Kia South Africa is yet to confirm the updated Sportage for the local market, which, if approved, could happen before year-end. As a reminder, the South African range spans six models and five trim levels: LX, EX, GT-Line, GT-Line Plus and GT-Line S, with a choice of two engines; the 1.6 T-GDI rated at 132kW/265Nm and the 1.6 CRDI turbodiesel outputting 100kW/320Nm. No longer boxed as Hyundai prices all-new, hybrid-only Santa Fe
For the first time in South Africa, Hyundai offers a hybrid powertrain and, in the case of the Santa Fe, minus a turbodiesel engine. Revealed nearly two years ago, Hyundai, after a number of delays, have finally announced pricing for the all-new Santa Fe ahead of its South African market launch this month. Dramatic new look The most radical iteration in the moniker's now 25-year history, the fifth generation Santa Fe, known internally as MX5, adopts a distinct boxy appearance similar to the Defender 130 and the erstwhile Ford Flex, while also becoming the first Hyundai model in South Africa to use a hybrid powertrain. ALSO READ: New box ticked as Hyundai debuts radically new Santa Fe Slimmed down to a solitary model, the four-wheel-drive Elite with seating for seven, the Santa Fe conforms to a styling concept known as 'Open for More' and, aside from taking styling inspiration from the Exter at the front, boasts a rear facia with wraparound light clusters mounted above the bumper not to dissimilar to the much-criticised second generation Ford Scorpio. Wider and longer than the previous Santa Fe, but with the same width and a longer wheelbase, the newcomer's ground clearance decreases from 205 mm to 177 mm. Boxy styling has elements from the Defender 130 and, at the rear, the controversial Ford Scorpio in the look of the light clusters. Image: Hyundai Due to its design, space ranges from 413-litres with all seven seats up, to 725-litres with in five-seat guise. Dropping the middle-row sees this increase to 1 148-litres. Although no tow rating was released, Hyundai reports an approach angle of 17.4-degrees, breakover of 15.3-degrees and departure of 17.4-degrees. Image: Hyundai Also fitted is a 6.6-inch panel with physical buttons and dials for the climate control and a floating centre console with dual cupholders, a pair of smartphone charging pads, type-C USB ports and armrest-cum-storage area. Spec Riding on 20-inch alloy wheels, the Santa Fe's list of standard amenities include the following: LED headlights; side window blinds for the second row; ambient lighting; dual-pane panoramic sunroof; leather upholstery; 12-speaker Bose sound system; heated and ventilated front seats; keyless entry; push-button start; rain sense wipers; heated second row digital rear-view mirror; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto On the safety and driver assistance side, Hyundai has left little out from the European model by equipping the South African-spec Santa Fe with the following: 360-degree camera system; tyre pressure monitor; front and rear parking sensors; Adaptive Cruise Control Rear Occupant Alert; Forward Collision Avoidance Assist; Lane Keep Assist; Road Edge Detection; Blind Spot Monitoring; Rear Cross Traffic Alert; Driver Attention Alert; Lane Follow Assist; Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist; Reverse Automatic Braking; Safe Exit Assist Goodbye diesel Up front, the Santa Fe's biggest departure from previous generations, as mentioned, is the lack of a turbodiesel engine the MX5 never received development for. Instead, it now derives motivation from a self-charging hybrid consisting of a 1.6 T-GDI petrol engine and a 270-volt battery that powers an electric motor integrated into the housing of the six-speed automatic gearbox. While the former produces 132kW/265Nm on its own, the electric hardware outputs 44kW/264Nm, which, in combined form, develops 175kW/367Nm – 27 kW more but 73 Nm less than the outgoing Santa Fe's 2.2-litre turbodiesel. According to Hyundai, the setup results in a top speed of 190 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and a claimed fuel consumption of 7.5 L/100 km. In total, three modes are fitted: Eco, MyDrive and Sport, plus three off-road or Terrain settings: Sand, Snow and Mud. At the same time, three levels of brake regeneration can be selected from by using the paddle shifters which seemingly don't function as the manual override for the transmission. Colours and price On the colour front, six hues have been selected: Creamy White Pearl, Electronic Grey Pearl, Abyss Black Pearl, Pebble Blue Pearl, Typhoon Silver Metallic and Earthy Brass Matte. Priced at R1 249 900, the Santa Fe's sticker includes a seven-year/200 000 km warranty, a six-year/90 000 km service plan and an eight-year/160 000 km battery pack warranty.
