Anwar urges peaceful talks in India-Pakistan, Thai-Cambodia
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hopes that Pakistan and India can reach a peaceful and comprehensive solution to ensure lasting regional stability and peace.
Sharing on Facebook today, Anwar said the wish was conveyed to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif when he received a phone call from the leader who is currently performing the hajj pilgrimage.
'I pray that he has a successful hajj and wish Eid Mubarak (Selamat Hari Raya) to all Pakistanis,' he said.
At the same time, Anwar also hoped that Shehbaz's official visit to Malaysia could be rescheduled when the situation in Pakistan permits.
He said Malaysia looks forward to the opportunity to continue strengthening its strategic, as well as mutually respectful and beneficial, bilateral relationships.
Anwar also appreciated compliments delivered by Shehbaz on Malaysia's success in hosting the recent ASEAN Summit.
Meanwhile, Anwar also contacted Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to express his appreciation for their commitment to resolving the border dispute through negotiations and diplomatic channels.
He called on both countries to continue to exercise restraint, take steps to de-escalate tensions, and work towards a peaceful and comprehensive resolution.
'Malaysia greatly values the good relations between the two countries.
'As the ASEAN Chairman, I am confident that the spirit of regional cooperation and ASEAN's principles of peaceful resolution can be a solid foundation in addressing any dispute,' Anwar said in a Facebook post.
On May 28, Thai and Cambodian military forces were involved in a brief skirmish in Ubon Ratchathani province, Thailand and Preah Vihear province, Cambodia, which reportedly resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
Cambodia then announced its intention to take the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Thailand also reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the border issue with Cambodia through peaceful efforts in accordance with international law and relevant agreements and memoranda.

Thailand 'deeply saddened' by death of Gaza hostage, says foreign ministry

Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura said in a video statement the ministry "is deeply saddened to announce that today, the Royal Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv was informed by a representative of the Israeli government that Mr Nattapong Pinta, the last Thai hostage, has been confirmed dead." An Israeli military statement, which gave his name as Natthapong Pinta, said on Saturday its forces retrieved his body from the Rafah area of southern Gaza. It said he was taken alive as a hostage during Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and "was murdered while in captivity". The Israeli military statement blamed the Mujahideen Brigades, an armed group close to Hamas ally Islamic Jihad. Nikorndej said Nattapong was one of three Thais held hostage in Gaza. The other two were confirmed dead in 2024 but Nikorndej said Israel has "not yet been able to retrieve their corpses". He said the Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv has contacted Nattapong's family to inform them and would work with the Israeli side to return his body to Thailand as soon as possible. Indonesia's FM calls for stronger Asean mechanisms after Vision 2045 adoption
JAKARTA/MANILA (Bernama): Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono has called for strengthening Asean's institutional mechanisms, including its diplomatic corps and central bodies, to effectively implement the Asean Community Vision 2045 adopted at last month's summit in Kuala Lumpur. At a meeting with the Committee of Permanent Representatives to Asean (CPR) and Timor-Leste's Ambassador to Asean at the Foreign Ministry here, he praised the progress achieved through Asean's cooperation frameworks, especially after the adoption of the Asean Community Vision (ACV) 2045. He said the long-term vision, adopted at the 46th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur last month, outlines a strategic roadmap for the next two decades, envisaging a resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred Asean. "We need to strengthen Asean mechanisms, including the CPR, and bolster the Asean Secretariat and Asean Headquarters in Jakarta to optimise our potential in addressing challenges within the region and globally,' he said. Sugiono also underscored the CPR's role in fostering community building, facilitating cross-pillar coordination, and engaging with Asean's external partners, as it is essential to achieving the goals of ACV. Thailand tightens border controls for tourists after Cambodia clash
Image from The Nation Thailand/Asia News Network BANGKOK (AFP): Thailand temporarily closed its biggest border crossing with Cambodia to local tourists on Saturday after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a recent military clash between the two uneasy neighbours. There has been sporadic violence on the Thai-Cambodia frontier since fighting first broke out in 2008, resulting in at least 28 deaths. A Cambodian soldier was killed in the most recent outbreak on May 28 in an area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Cambodia, Thailand and Laos meet. The Thai and Cambodian militaries agreed to ease tensions the following day but Cambodia then said it would keep its troops in the area, despite Thailand urging it to withdraw. The Royal Thai Army took control of the "opening and closing" of all border crossings it shares with Cambodia on Saturday, citing a "threat to Thailand's sovereignty and security". The 1st Army Region banned the passage of six-wheeled trucks and reduced the operating hours of the border crossing between Aranyaprathet in Thailand's southeast and Poipet in Cambodia's west. It said in a statement on Saturday that Thais and Cambodians would only be allowed to cross for work and trade purposes. The Aranyaprathet-Poipet border crossing sees the most land traffic between the two countries with several thousand people using it each day, many of them Thais going to gamble at casinos on the Cambodian side. The Royal Thai Army told AFP that the restrictions only applied to citizens of the two countries but that implementation "may vary from place to place". Six other border checkpoints tightened their opening hours and issued bans on six-wheeled vehicles. The Thai army said trade remained unaffected and Cambodian workers were still permitted to enter Thailand. Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Phumtham Wechayachai said in a statement on Saturday it was "deeply regrettable" that Cambodia had "rejected" the proposal to withdraw its armed forces after the May 28 incident. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Monday the kingdom would file a complaint with the International Court of Justice over the border dispute. Thai authorities said a Joint Boundary Committee would meet next week to resolve the issue. - AFP
