Threat of lightning delays start of Club World Cup clash
ORLANDO, Fla, June 17 (Reuters) - The start of the Group F Club World Cup clash between South Korea's Ulsan HD and African Champions League runners-up Mamelodi Sundowns was delayed seconds before the teams were due to kick off because of the threat of lightning.
The two teams had come out onto the pitch to start their first match at the competition, but as they were ready to kick off, French referee Clement Turpin took the teams off the pitch.
Spectators were also told to leave their seats and take shelter on the concourse around the Inter & Co Stadium.
Officials said there was a threat of lightning although there was no accompanying rain but dark cloud could be seen in the distance and the wind had picked up noticeably. The weather forecast had been for passing showers in the afternoon.
The match was scheduled for a 6 p.m. local time kickoff.

June 18 - Javier Baez hit a pair of solo home runs and the host Detroit Tigers downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on Tuesday. Isiah Kiner-Falefa's leadoff single in the third sparked Pittsburgh's two-run inning. Andrew McCutchen smacked a one-out double before Canario lined a 3-0 Mize fastball into right, scoring both runners. Baez tied the game at 3 leading off the fifth. He blasted a Falter curveball off the top of the left-center field wall and it caromed into the visitor's bullpen. The Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the sixth against Carmen Mlodzinski. Greene led off with a single and scored when Perez smacked a fastball into the right-center field gap for a triple. Baez gave the Tigers some breathing room in the seventh when he cranked a Mlodzinski sweeper over the left-center field wall. Reports: Jets sign K Harrison Mevis after UFL stint
June 18 - The New York Jets signed kicker Harrison Mevis, who most recently played for the Birmingham Stallions in the 2025 UFL season, according to ESPN and other reports Tuesday. Mevis, 23, has yet to appear in an NFL game after a successful college career at Missouri. In 2024, he signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent but was waived during training camp. Mevis -- nicknamed "The Thiccer Kicker" for his burly frame -- went 20-for-21 on field goal attempts for Birmingham in the recently completed UFL season. The biggest play of his four-year career at Missouri was a 61-yard game-winning field goal to upset No. 15 Kansas State in 2023. He was a first-team All-American selection in 2021 and went 89-for-106 on field goals and 148-for-149 on extra point attempts in his career.
