Belgium's Van Hoeydonck, first artist to exhibit on Moon, dies

Belgian artist Paul Van Hoeydonck, who made what was for decades the only work of art on the Moon, died on Saturday aged 99, his family said on Facebook.
Born on Oct 8, 1925, Van Hoeydonck was a prolific artist whose works spanned sculpture, painting, drawing, collage and graphic design.
He is best known for Fallen Astronaut , an aluminium sculpture left on the moon in 1971 by the crew of the Apollo 15 spacecraft, in homage to their fallen colleagues.
It was the first and, for decades, the only work of art on show on the Moon's surface.
In February 2024, Fallen Astronaut was joined by 125 miniature sculptures by the American artist Jeff Koons. - AFP

‘Italian genius' Inzaghi to coach Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal
FORMER Inter boss Simone Inzaghi was revealed as the new coach of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal on Thursday, days before they take part in the new-look Club World Cup. The Italian, who led Inter to a heavy defeat in Saturday's Champions League final, had earlier played down rumours of a two-year deal worth €50 million (RM242m). 'I am Simone Inzaghi and today begins my story with Al Hilal,' he said in a slickly produced video posted on X, in which he sips Arabian coffee and pins an Al Hilal lapel badge on his suit. Inzaghi, 49, becomes just the latest high-profile footballing acquisition for oil-rich Saudi Arabia, which will host the World Cup in 2034. 'The Italian genius is here,' Al Hilal posted. Inzaghi joins the likes of Ruben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrovic at Al Hilal, which let injury-hit Neymar go in January after just seven appearances since his arrival in August 2023. A source with knowledge of the negotiations last week told AFP that the 'first option' for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has signalled he is leaving rival club Al Nassr, could be a move to Al Hilal. Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes this week said he rejected Al Hilal's reported $135m (RM573m) offer because he wanted to 'continue to play at the highest level'. Inzaghi's Inter slumped 5-0 to Qatar-funded Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday's Champions League final. His departure was confirmed on Tuesday. The former forward guided Inter to one Serie A title and two Italian Cups since joining in 2021. He took them to two Champions League finals in three seasons but lost both. On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter ended the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. Featuring a bigger screen and more processing power, the device is an upgrade to the Switch, which became a global phenomenon with hit games such as Animal Crossing . The original Switch has sold 152 million units since its 2017 release, making it the third best-selling console ever. At a Tokyo electronics store on Thursday morning, Nintendo fans – including 24-year-old Lei Wang, a recent graduate from China – queued to collect their devices. He had been "shocked" to win a pre-order lottery, as none of his friends had been selected. "It's basically just me who got picked... so I don't really want to say anything" to them, he laughed. Shinichi Sekiguchi, 31, said he was so excited he forgot to bring his phone, while 33-year-old Kuro said she had taken a day off work to play with her new device. "The improved graphics and the ability to play with a larger group – I think that's a big deal," she said. Serkan Toto from Tokyo consultancy Kantan Games said he "would not be surprised to see Switch 2 breaking sales records in the next weeks and months". In Japan, Nintendo's online store had 2.2 million pre-order applications for the Switch 2 – an "insane number the industry has never seen before", Toto told AFP. Worth the price? The Switch 2 has eight times the memory of the first Switch, and its controllers, which attach with magnets, can also be used like a desktop computer mouse. New functions allowing users to chat as they play online and temporarily share games with friends could also be a big draw for young audiences used to watching game streamers. Nintendo has its work cut out to match the overall success of the original, however. Challenges include uncertainty over US trade tariffs and whether it can convince enough people to pay the high price for its new device. The Switch 2 costs US$449.99 (RM1,909) in the United States, more than the original's launch price of US$299.99 (RM1,272). Both are hybrid consoles which can connect to a TV or be played on the go. New Switch 2 games such as Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World – which allow players to go exploring off-grid – are also more expensive than existing titles. "After playing it, I think it's worth the price," 24-year-old aspiring filmmaker Steven Paterno told AFP at a Nintendo launch event in New York City. "I loved the original Switch, but I had to admit the Switch 2 really tops it." Cancelled pre-orders Retailers in the United States, Europe and other major markets are gearing up for a rush of excited fans, with some stores opening at midnight to welcome them. "I'm very excited to pick it up at midnight," 22-year-old graduate Angel Caceres said at the New York launch event. "I'm going to be very tired after that." Supply pressures have forced some retailers to cancel orders, with Britain's Game saying it is "working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible". Nintendo forecasts it will ship 15 million Switch 2 consoles in the current financial year, roughly equal to the original console in the same period after its release. The Switch 2 "is priced relatively high" compared to its predecessor, the company's president Shuntaro Furukawa said at a financial results briefing in May. So it "will not be easy" to keep initial momentum going, he warned. Former Taiwanese boy band F4 reportedly planning to reunite for concert in 2026

Photo: Handout F4, one of the top Taiwanese boy bands alongside groups such as Energy and 5566 during the 2000s, could be making a comeback in 2026. According to an exclusive report by Taiwan's Mirror Media on June 4, the four members of the Mandopop act have finally reached an agreement and will reunite for a concert to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their debut. The reunion was made possible by Taiwan-based recording company B'in Music, which was behind the comeback of Energy in 2024. F4 consisted of Taiwanese stars Jerry Yan, 48; Vic Chou, 43; and Ken Chu, 46; as well as Taiwanese-American Van Ness Wu, 46. The quartet were brought together as a boy band in 2001 after acting in Taiwanese idol drama Meteor Garden (2001), which also starred the late Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu. Meteor Garden was such a phenomenon in Asia that the four men went on to record three albums and hold concert tours as F4. The group were later renamed JVKV, using the first letter of each of the members' names, due to copyright issues. The members went their separate ways in 2009 and have since performed together at Jiangsu Television's Spring Festival Gala only in 2013. After the split, Yan continued to act and occasionally took part in Chinese variety shows, while Wu is focusing on variety shows and commercial performances in China. Chu currently conducts live-stream sales, while Chou furthered his acting career, with his latest role in the upcoming drama series The World Between Us: After The Flames (2025). According to Mirror Media, B'in Music – which managed to convince Energy to reunite 15 years after their disbandment – has a list of former popular boy bands which it hopes to lobby for reunion, with F4 being top on the list. B'in Music, which includes Taiwanese bands Mayday and Accusefive in its stable of artistes, reportedly spent a long time talking to the four members, who are represented by different agencies. The task was made more difficult as the quartet were said to have split due to differences in their personalities and feelings of jealousy and unfairness between them. However, the success of Energy's reunion in 2024 proved to be a key factor in convincing them to come together again. Mirror Media said the huge marketability of F4 would be a big draw for the reunion concert and that the group may also tour Asia, in addition to focusing on China and Taiwan. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
