
Lonely Planet Just Published Its First L.G.B.T.Q. Guide. Why Now?
In the half-century since its first travel guide, 'Across Asia on the Cheap,' Lonely Planet has grown into a global behemoth, having sold 150 million printed guides advising budget travelers on where to go, stay and eat in destinations ranging from Scandinavia to South Africa. But until now the company had never published a stand-alone guide for L.G.B.T.Q. travelers.
'The LGBTQ+ Travel Guide,' by Alicia Valenski, features more than 50 queer-friendly destinations in a coffee-table-size book, a departure from thecompany's usual packable paperbacks. Also unlike the usual guides, this one explores destinations like Brooklyn, Berlin and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, entirely through local voices.
Lonely Planet, which has been including a section on L.G.B.T.Q. travel in its guidebooks for decades, is a strong player in digital guides through its website and app. So why was this the moment to debut a glossy guidebook that would barely fit into most backpacks?
I spoke to Ms. Valenski, 32, in late April near Marsha P. Johnson State Park in Brooklyn, which is featured in the guide. The conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.
Lonely Planet was poised to publish a book about queer travel in 2019 or 2020. And then the world stopped. And so once they were ready to pick it back up, it was like 2022 or 2023.

Broadway has found its Gen Z audience - by telling Gen Z stories
NEW YORK (AP) — Kimberly Belflower knew 'John Proctor is the Villain' needed its final cathartic scene to work — and, for that, it needed Lorde's 'Green Light.' 'I literally told my agent, 'I would rather the play just not get done if it can't use that song,'' the playwright laughed. She wrote Lorde a letter, explaining what the song meant, and got her green light. Starring Sadie Sink , the staggering play about high schoolers studying 'The Crucible' as the #MeToo movement arrives in their small Georgia town, earned seven Tony nominations , including best new play — the most of any this season. It's among a group of Broadway shows that have centered the stories of young people and attracted audiences to match. Sam Gold's Brooklyn-rave take on 'Romeo + Juliet,' nominated for best revival of a play and led by Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler with music from Jack Antonoff , drew the youngest ticket-buying audience recorded on Broadway, producers reported, with 14% of ticket purchasers aged 18-24, compared to the industry average of 3%. The shows share some DNA: pop music (specifically the stylings of Antonoff, who also produced 'Green Light'), Hollywood stars with established fanbases and stories that reflect the complexity of young adulthood. 'It was very clear that young people found our show because it was doing what theater's supposed to do,' Gold said. 'Be a mirror.' Embracing the poetry of teenage language The themes 'John Proctor' investigates aren't danced around (until they literally are). The girls are quick to discuss #MeToo's impact, intersectional feminism and sexual autonomy. Their conversations, true to teenage girlhood, are laced with comedy and pop culture references — Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, 'Twilight,' and, of course, Lorde. Fina Strazza, 19, portrays Beth, a leader who is whip-smart and well-intentioned — but whose friendships and belief system are shaken by the play's revelations. 'You have so much empathy and are so invested in her, but she still has these mishaps and slip-ups that young people often have,' said Strazza, nominated for best featured actor in a play. Some audience members have given her letters detailing how Beth helped them forgive themselves for how they handled similar experiences. The script is written in prose, with frequent line breaks and infrequent capital letters. Director Danya Taymor, nominated for best direction of a play a year after winning a Tony for another teenage canon classic, 'The Outsiders, ' was drawn to that rhythm — and how Belflower's depiction of adolescence captured its intensity, just as S.E. Hinton had. 'There's something about the teenage years that is so raw,' Taymor said. 'None of us can escape it.' Classic themes, made modern During his Tony-winning production of 'An Enemy of the People,' Gold found himself having conversations with young actors and theatergoers about climate change, politics and how 'theater was something that people their age and younger really need in a different way, as the world is becoming so addicted to technology,' he said. That conjured 'Romeo and Juliet.' The original text 'has it all in terms of what it means to inherit the future that people older than you have created,' Gold said. Building the world of this show, with an ensemble under 30, was not unlike building 'An Enemy of the People,' set in 19th century Norway, Gold said: 'I think the difference is that the world that I made for this show is something that a very hungry audience had not gotten to see.' Fans, Gold correctly predicted, were ravenous. Demand ahead of the first preview prompted a preemptive extension. Word (and bootleg video) of Connor doing a pullup to kiss Zegler made the rounds. 'Man of the House,' an Antonoff-produced ballad sung by Zegler mid-show, was released as a single. With the show premiering just before the U.S. presidential election, Voters of Tomorrow even registered new voters in the lobby. Audiences proved willing to pay: Average ticket prices hovered around $150. Cheaper rush and lottery tickets drew lines hours before the box office opened. Every week but one sold out. 'The show was initially really well sold because we had a cast that appealed to a really specific audience,' said producer Greg Nobile of Seaview Productions. 'We continued to see the houses sell out because these audiences came, and they were all over online talking about the ways in which they actually felt seen.' Building a Gen Z theater experience with Gen Z Thomas Laub, 28, and Alyah Chanelle Scott, 27, started Runyonland Productions for that very reason. 'We both felt a lot of frustration with the industry, and the ways that we were boxed out of it as students in Michigan who were able to come to New York sparingly,' Laub said. Runyonland was launched in 2018 with the premise that highlighting new, bold voices would bring change. This spring, Scott, known for playing Whitney in HBO's 'Sex Lives of College Girls,' acted off-Broadway in Natalie Margolin's 'All Nighter.' 'I was standing onstage and looking out and seeing the college kids that I was playing,' Scott said. 'I was like, 'I respect you so much. I want to do you proud. I want to show you a story that represents you in a way that doesn't belittle or demean you, but uplifts you.'' Co-producing 'John Proctor,' Scott said, gave Runyonland the opportunity to target that audience on a Broadway scale. Belflower developed the show with students as part of a The Farm College Collaboration Project. It's been licensed over 100 times for high school and college productions. The Broadway production's social and influencer marketing is run by 20-somethings, too. Previews attracted fans with a $29 ticket lottery. While average prices jumped to over $100 last week (still below the Broadway-wide average), $40 rush, lottery and standing room tickets have sold out most nights, pushing capacity over 100%. The success is validating Runyonland's mission, Laub said. 'Alyah doesn't believe me that I cry every time at the end,' Laub said. Scott laughs. 'I just want to assure you, on the record, that I do indeed cry every time.' Harnessing a cultural catharsis The final scene of 'John Proctor' is a reclamation fueled by rage and 'Green Light.' Capturing that electricity has been key to the show's marketing. 'The pullup (in 'Romeo + Juliet') is so impactful because it's so real. It's like so exactly what a teenage boy would do,' Taymor said. 'I think when you see the girls in 'John Proctor' screaming ... it hits you in a visceral way.' That screaming made the Playbill cover. 'In my opinion, the look and feel of that campaign feels different from a traditional theatrical campaign, and it feels a lot closer to a film campaign,' Laub said. The show's team indeed considered the zeitgeist-infiltrating work of their sister industries, specifically studios like Neon and A24. In May, 'John Proctor is the Villain' finished its second 'spirit week' with a school spirit day. Earlier events included an ice cream social — actors served Van Leeuwen — a silent disco and a banned book giveaway. For those not in their own school's colors, the merch stand offered T-shirts, including one printed with the Walt Whitman-channeling line said by Sink's Shelby: 'I contain frickin' multitudes.' Julia Lawrence, 26, designed the shirt after the show's team saw her TikTok video reimagining their traditional merch into something more like a concert tee. 'It's just so incredible to bring Gen Z into the theater that way, especially at a time when theater has never been more important,' Lawrence said. Inside Marcus Samuelsson's Bright, Berbere-Blasted D.C. Debut
NY-based celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson finally gets to do a D.C. restaurant on his terms. Marcus DC, his first in the nation's capital, opened Tuesday, June 3, in NoMa's Morrow Hotel (222 M Street NE) . The acclaimed restaurateur behind Harlem's hot Red Rooster oversaw every last detail at the 200-room hotel's anchor dining attraction, from the Ethiopian and Swedish influences on the menus, the colorful textured mural by Brooklyn-based artist Derrick Adams above the stunning bar, down to the waiters' custom patchwork aprons. The result: a fun and lively atmosphere that prepares diners to sample Samuelsson's one-of-a-kind dishes. 'This is the first restaurant that we are doing on our terms,' Samuelsson tells Eater. 'We just wanted to connect, to keep the guests curious and to make them feel like 'Wow, this is an experience that I want to come back to.'' With the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay supplying local oysters, rockfish, and, of course, blue crabs, Samuelsson knew his seafood-centric restaurant had to have a local chef who knows its waterways well. He immediately reached out to his longtime collaborator chef Anthony Jones, a Maryland native that worked at Miami's Red Rooster Overtown in 2020 and most recently led the kitchen at Dirty Habit, who adds his own twists to Marcus DC's dishes. Jones infused the menu with the flavors of D.C., from the mambo sauce on the Chuck B's roast chicken (named after one of the original founders of Go-Go) to the addictive Mel's crab rice, Jones's homage to his summers growing up in Calvert County picking up fresh crabs with his family from Mel's crab truck. 'Every summer we would stop by and get a few bushels of crabs from Mel's Truck that we would drive past in Huntington, Maryland,' says Jones. 'We would all dig in, crack open a few beers, have some sides, and music would be playing. And that was just like a fun summer time experience for me and now I've taken that and mixed it with rice.' The 153-seat newcomer with a 12-seat bar was already packed on the first night of service. Samuelsson says he has many opening favorites, notably that crab rice, but recommends starting with his signature blue cornbread served with yassa butter and berbere honey; followed by his Swediopian, a cured salmon served with a goldenberry broth, fennel mustard, and teff crisp; and fluke crudo served in an apple cucumber aguachile with a crispy plantain. After that the options are endless, diners can chow down on mains like the roasted rockfish served with an octopus-based chili (a homage to Ben's Chili Bowl), the Chuck B's Roast Chicken, and, of course, that signature Mel's Crab Rice with pickled okra and uni bernaise. Try to save room for dessert. Executive pastry chef Rachel Sherriff, formerly of Rooster & Owl, has created a selection inspired by her Jamaican heritage that will not be found anywhere else. The Thai basil rice pudding accompanied with lime cake, ginger lime jelly, and yogurt sorbet is habit-forming. Her praline coconut cake is showcased with a table-side retro trolley where the final dish is theatrically built in front of guests. 'Once you go through the meal, then you come to Rachel, there's another level of discovery,' Samuelsson remarks. 'So that is for me, what I'm extremely excited about… it's the biggest privilege when you can work with young people that are committed to our craft.' The cocktails menu here was crafted by master mixologist Glendon Hartley, of award-winning Causa/Amazonia and Service Bar, to specifically compliment the food. Options such as a spicy Abyssinian Blaze made with gin, Campari, and the Ethiopian spice berbere or the light Velvet Detour made with tamarind, cognac, and lemon juice do not disappoint. While Samuelsson honed his techniques working in Italy, France, Japan, and Sweden, he said many of the foods and decor at his newest restaurant are inspired by the continent of Africa. He hopes the restaurant will serve as a lively cultural destination that 'showcases the richness and diversity of the Black culinary experience' in a modern setting. 'I want the guests to feel a sense of joy and warmth in the place once they enter and as they dine and discover chef Anthony's food, how delicious and extremely thoughtful it is. But it's also craveable, made with great techniques,' he says. Samuelsson said he always felt a close connection to D.C.'s vibrant Ethiopian community and the 'mom-and-pop' shops that line neighborhoods like Adams Morgan. He started exploring the city in the mid-90s, making frequent weekends trips from New York and, as his notoriety grew, returned to cook for high-stakes dinner and eventually for the Obamas at the White House. He was drawn to the Union Market area because it feels vibrant and layered, plus he says other chefs at the surrounding restaurants have been 'super welcoming.' He also enjoys just strolling through the buzzing neighborhood and checking out vintage stores whenever he gets a chance. After a Marcus DC meal, a nightcap or at least a quick peek of the view at his rooftop bar Sly is a great way to end the evening. Related Best Places to Dine in NoMa and Around Union Market Samuelsson has a few words of advice for aspiring chefs: Try your hand at every position in the kitchen and front of house, 'learn about new cultures and food languages', and take advantage of social media, but it all comes down to having a 'love for the craft.' 'The chefs that truly love the craft will be successful, because it's not only an external affirmation, it's an internal affirmation,' he says. I identify as a rapidly aging LA bisexual in a stable relationship with a nice guy who brings me coffee when I'm hungover and secretly arranges to get my filthy car cleaned, but there was a time—not so long ago, in fact—when I was a young, messy, newly out lesbian living in Brooklyn and doing my level best to secure a girlfriend however possible. I didn't want just any girlfriend, however; I went on plenty of dates with nice, normal women who held down jobs and paid their taxes and responded to my texts. But the ones who truly held my attention during that mildly insane time of my life were, well…the not-so-sane ones. Given that I've struggled with depression and disordered eating for most of my life, it feels kind of weird and vaguely misogynistic for me to refer to any other woman as 'crazy,' but you have to understand that the C-word was by no means a dealbreaker for me back then; I was absolutely captivated by the dazzling chaos that beautiful, charismatic, mean, possibly under-medicated women let loose in my life (whenever I could actually convince one to return my calls, that is). Then, on a recent Sunday afternoon, it suddenly hit me: Was my 'type' back then more or less just Angelina Jolie as stunningly sexy sociopath Lisa Rowe in the 1999 film Girl, Interrupted?
