Bushra Bibi moves IHC for better prison facilities

Bushra Bibi, wife of PTI founder Imran Khan and former first lady, has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking better facilities at Adiala Jail, where she is currently serving a seven-year sentence in the £190 million case.
Through her lawyers, Bushra Bibi filed a petition requesting the court to direct jail authorities to provide improved amenities under the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978.
In her plea, the former first lady stated that she had resided in the Prime Minister House during her husband's tenure and, owing to her previous lifestyle and public status, was legally entitled to certain comforts and facilities in prison.
The petition alleged that despite submitting a formal request to the Adiala Jail superintendent, no action was taken.
It further argued that her husband, Imran Khan, was also declared eligible for improved jail conditions while detained in the same facility. She asked the court to instruct the authorities to fulfil their legal responsibilities in a similar manner.
Bushra Bibi has named the federal government, the superintendent of Adiala Jail, and the chief commissioner of Islamabad as respondents in the case.
What is the £190 million case?
The case alleges that Imran Khan and others involved adjusted Rs50 billion—equivalent to £190 million at the time—that was transferred by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) to the Pakistani government.
As PM, Khan obtained cabinet approval for this settlement on December 3, 2019, without disclosing the confidential details of the agreement. The arrangement had stipulated that the funds would be submitted to the Supreme Court.
According to NAB officials, Khan and his wife received land worth billions of rupees intended for the construction of an educational institute.
NAB filed the reference on December 1, 2023 against eight accused persons including Imran and his wife.

Sindh bans 4-seater rickshaws; amends vehicle registration rules
Sindh government on Friday approved a ban on four-seater rickshaws and online as well as on the counter sale of tinted windows, police lights, and sirens. The meeting chaired by Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar discussed amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules also approved outsourcing the motor vehicle fitness check. IGP Sindh, and secretaries of law, transport and mass transit, excise and taxation, along with the DIG traffic were present in the meeting. They approved mandatory fitness certification for commercial and non-commercial vehicles, It was decided that a draft would be prepared and submitted to the government for approval and ratification of the amendments. Participants approved a complete ban on four-seater rickshaws, and decided to make it mandatory for water tankers and dumpers to install trackers and sensors. Minister Lanjar stated that third party services will be engaged to issue fitness certificates to commercial and non-commercial vehicles, with formal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed with them. Violation fines were also approved, including Rs200,000 fined for wrong-way driving of government vehicles, Rs25,000 for motorcyclists driving against traffic, and Rs100,000 for four-wheelers violating one-way rules. Motorcyclists driving without a license are to be fined Rs25,000, while car drivers are to be fined Rs50,000 for the violation. Meanwhile, first-time offenders of one-wheeling or drifting are to be fined Rs100,000, increasing to Rs200,000 and Rs300,000 for repeat offenses. Minister Lanjar also approved the installation of at least five cameras in heavy/load-carrying vehicles. Additionally, e-challans for traffic violations will be delivered to vehicle owners' registered home addresses, and vehicles with unpaid fines will not be approved for sale or transfer. The minister further stated that the traffic, transport, and excise systems will now be interlinked and operated online, while a dedicated Traffic Magistrate will be appointed to handle traffic law violation cases. Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawala assured the department's full support in enforcing traffic regulations and emphasised that no registration or route permit will be issued to four-seater or larger rickshaws, and a crackdown will be launched against any such vehicles on the roads. He further stated that all organisational steps to establish the vehicle fitness service structure will be completed promptly, after which strict enforcement of fitness requirements will follow.

Their talks covered a range of topics, including the wars in Europe, South Asia and the Middle East, besides the US-China trade issue and bilateral matters, according to media reports. During the meeting Trump insisted that the reduction in tension was possible because of his efforts and cooperation with the leaders of India and Pakistan. He praised the Indian and Pakistani leaderships and stressed that in the event of a nuclear conflict, the entire world could have been in danger. Taking pride in his role as the peacemaker, Trump regretted that he did not get the recognition he deserved for this important diplomatic achievement. "No one else could have done it," he said, referring to the ceasefire he had announced on May 10, and later confirmed by both the countries. Tensions between India and Pakistan reached a boiling point after an attack in the Indian-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on April 22, which killed 26 people. India swiftly blamed Pakistan, but did not present any evidence. However, the situation escalated as missile strikes and air raids rocked both nations, resulting in dozens of casualties between May 7 and 10. Trump said his diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation involved intense talks with both sides. "Pakistan has very strong leadership. Some people won't like when I say that, but it is what it is," Trump said. "I spoke to very talented people on both sides," he added. "They stopped that war. I was very proud of that."

PM, Field Marshal perform Umrah
JEDDAH: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir have performed Umrah along with members of the Pakistani delegation during their ongoing official visit to Saudi Arabia. During the Umrah pilgrimage, special prayers were offered for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan, the unity of the Muslim Ummah, and for the oppressed people of Gaza. Upon arrival in Jeddah, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was warmly received by Prince Saud bin Abdullah Al Jiluwi, Governor of Jeddah; Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malki, Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan; Ahmed Farooq, Pakistan's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia; and other diplomatic officials. The Prime Minister's visit is scheduled for June 5 and 6, and he is spending Eid-ul-Azha in Saudi Arabia. A special meeting will be held between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. During the meeting, both leaders will discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in key areas including trade and investment, welfare of the Muslim Ummah, and regional peace and security. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will also thank the Saudi leadership for their constructive role in easing the recent Pakistan-India tensions.
