Reunited indie group The Maccabees are joined by former Glastonbury headliner in ‘wonderful surprise'

REUNITED group The Maccabees celebrated their return to the Glastonbury stage with a surprise appearance from a festival legend.
The band initially split in 2016, but reformed this year and cemented their comeback by headlining the Park Stage at Worthy Farm on Sunday night.

Florence Welch made a surprise appearance towards the end of their set

An hour into their set, the band stepped things up for fans, and revellers with Florence Welch, the iconic lead singer of Florence and The Machine.
Florence is a Glastonbury regular, headlining on the main Pyramid stage back in 2015 and famed for songs including Shake It Off, You've Got The Love and Kiss With A Fist.
Together, the group performed track Love You Better, before Florence and The Machine's iconic crowdpleaser, Dog Days Are Over.
Florence declared: "Do we have any Maccabees super-fans in the audience? Because you definitely have one on stage.'
The Maccabees headline slot closed out The Park Stage after a massive weekend – with The Prodigy headlining The Other Stage and Olivia Rodrigo taking to the Pyramid Stage.
The weekend has proven to be filled with surprise collaborations – with Olivia Rodrigo bringing out The Cure's Robert Smith during her headline slot.
Rod Stewart, who took the Legends slot on Sunday night, reunited with his Faces bandmate – Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood – as well as Simply Red's Mick Hucknall and Lulu.
DJ Fatboy Slim also surprised fans by bringing out his son, Woody Cook for a performance, who he shares with Radio DJ Zoe Ball.
Glastonbury made sure fans knew this weekend would be one full of surprises when Lorde kicked off the festival on Friday with a surprise set – performing her entire new album, Virgin, on stage.
This was followed shortly afterwards by confirmation that Lewis Capaldi would be making his Glastonbury return on the Pyramid stage in the mysterious 'Secret Set' slot.

In honour of this, and in one of the more unexpected performances, fellow Scottish band Franz Ferdinand brought out "The Original Capaldi" for their hit Take Me Out – Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi.
Pulp made their comeback to the festival – 30 years since they headlined – after being revealed as the mysterious Patchwork which had been marked for a key spot on the Pyramid stage on Saturday.
Haim also had a surprise set on Saturday evening on the Park Stage.
However, the festival was dogged with crowding issues, with major stages having to lock off access ahead of major sets.
On Saturday alone, this included Charli XCX' s headline slot on the Other Stage, Scissor Sisters' headline slot on the Woodsies Stage, and Kneecap's performance on West Holts.

Olivia Rodrigo at Glastonbury review – full of bile and brilliance, this is easily the weekend's best big set
Olivia Rodrigo's first Glastonbury appearance in 2022 was the stuff of minor legend. Aged 19, already the author of an 18m selling debut album, but something of an unknown quantity in festival terms, she turned out to be rather more feral and off-message than you might have expected a former Disney Channel star turned teen-popper to be. At one juncture, she named each individual judge responsible for overturning Roe v Wade that weekend, shouting 'We hate you! We hate you!' then performing Lily Allen's Fuck You in duet with its author. Three years on, with another huge-selling album in the bag, and lifted to the status of headliner, nothing quite so likely to stir up controversy on Fox News happens. But the singer is still capable of springing surprises, when she announces the arrival of a special guest – 'perhaps the best songwriter to come out of England … a Glastonbury legend and a personal hero of mine', you somehow automatically expect Ed Sheeran to appear from the wings, acoustic guitar in hand. But this does Rodrigo something of a disservice. It turns out to be Robert Smith, who duets with her on versions of Friday I'm In Love and Just Like Heaven. Securing the presence of the Cure's frontman is, as young people are wont to say, a massive flex. For one thing, as the sharp WTF? intake of breath that greets his appearance indicates, it's the one 'secret' appearance of the entire festival that genuinely seems to have been kept a secret. It's also a smart way of drawing in a crowd substantially more varied than you suspect ordinarily attends Rodrigo's gigs: she made her name with songs that sounded like teenage diary entries set to music that balanced piano balladry with zippy pop-punk. But in truth, Rodrigo doesn't really need an alt-rock legend to win over the crowd – it's already happened before Smith arrives. Clad in a pair of 18-hole Doc Martens, she's a really engaging performer, cravenly playing up to the crowd by hymning Britain's pubs – 'where no one judges you for having a pint at lunchtime' – and M&S confectionery legend Colin the Caterpillar, changing into a pair of union jack hot pants midway through the set, and demanding her fans 'think about something or someone that really fucking pisses you off' and scream mid-song. Theoretically her sound exists at two distinct polarities that shouldn't really mesh together – the soft rock adjacent ballads and the pop-punk, the latter sounding noticeably heftier live than on record, the guitar solos surprisingly gnarly. But they're united both by the fact that the songs are uniformly well-written – Get Him Back! has a timelessly snotty chorus that glam titans Chinn and Chapman would have been proud to give Suzi Quatro; All-American Bitch is sharp and funny; Vampire's swell from downcast introspection to bile-spitting theatricality is brilliantly done – and that their tone is invariably lovelorn and accusatory. If the noisier tracks are more immediate live, giving her backing band more chance to demonstrate their potency, the set is perfectly balanced. Even if you don't count yourself among the Rodrigo stans lined up against the front barrier – the big screens show them both passionately screaming along and looking faintly baffled when Robert Smith's moment in the spotlight arrives – it never lags. It also feels like more of an event than any other big set this year: as it ends with fireworks, you get the distinct feeling that, at 22, a teen pop star might have unexpectedly, but deservedly, stolen the show.

Glastonbury fans vent their fury as Grammy winner's performance is 'missing' from BBC iPlayer
Doechii fans have vented their fury after the star's Glastonbury performance was noticeably missing from BBC iPlayer on Monday. The Grammy Award winning singer, took to the West Holts stage at Worthy Farm on Sunday however, 24 hours later her set was still unavailable on the BBC streaming service - sparking concern among fans. Doechii's impressive 45-minute performance, which featured singing, dancing, rapping, is available on BBC Sounds. However other acts like, The 1975, Olivia Rodrigo, Alanis Morisette, Rod Stewart, and Charli XCX's sets were uploaded to iPlayer almost instantly after they finished. Fans have been left disappointed as they attempted to stream the set and have taken to X - formerly known as Twitter - to complain to the BBC and ask if there is a reason why it hasn't been included in their coverage. They penned: 'Is there a reason @BBC left the Doechii set off the #iplayer site? I missed her set and wanted to watch it back but cant find it'; '@bbcglasto Where is Doechii's set on iplayer???'; 'Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but why isn't doechii's glastonbury set on iplayer yet. Glastonbury Festival hit with 31 arrests as over 140 crimes reported to police
Glastonbury Festival came to a close today with revellers heading home, and police have now confirmed the number of arrests made over the course of the event Over 140 crimes were reported at Glastonbury Festival, including drug offences, public order offences and sexual offences. But as the four-day event has come to an end, local police have now confirmed the number of arrests made. This year, the biggest names in music headed to Worthy Park in Somerset for the annual event, with The 1975, Olivia Rodrigo and Neil Young headlining the iconic Pyramid Stage across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But revellers started to arrive on Tuesday night, with over 200,000 people heading to the farm. Those who arrived on Tuesday were the first to get in once the gates officially opened on Wednesday, hoping to pitch their tent in the best spots across the site and prepare for the weekend of live music. With the event now officially closed until 2027, Avon and Somerset Police Service have now confirmed the total number of crimes reported and arrests made. Since 00.01 on Wednesday, June 25, a total of 145 crimes have been reported. These include two for criminal damage, 28 crime-related incidents, 22 drug offences, seven for fraud, one for miscellaneous crimes against society, two for possession of weapons, 13 for public order offences, one for robbery, three for sexual offences, 14 for theft, 27 for violence against a person, and 25 'blank'. The force states that any incidents recorded as 'blank' or 'crime-related incident' may be re-categorised at a later date following enquiries to determine what and if any, criminal offence is alleged to have occurred. In total, there were 31 arrests this year, both inside and outside the festival perimeter. Numbers, however, can rise if a victim has chosen to report an alleged incident via the non-urgent online reporting forms, or if an alleged incident is reported after the iconic festival. It comes after the force launched a criminal investigation into the performances of Bob Vylan and rap group Kneecap at the festival after reviewing video footage and audio recordings, with a senior detective appointed to lead it. A police spokesman said: "Video footage and audio from Bob Vylan and Kneecap's performances at Glastonbury Festival on Saturday has been reviewed. Following the completion of that assessment process, we have decided further enquiries are required and a criminal investigation is now being undertaken. A senior detective has been appointed to lead this investigation. "This has been recorded as a public order incident at this time while our enquiries are at an early stage. The investigation will be evidence-led and will closely consider all appropriate legislation, including relating to hate crimes." They added: "We have received a large amount of contact in relation to these events from people across the world and recognise the strength of public feeling. There is absolutely no place in society for hate. "Neighbourhood policing teams are speaking with people in their local communities and key stakeholders to make sure anyone who needs us knows that we are here for them. We hope the work we have carried out, and are continuing to carry out, reassures the public how seriously we are treating Saturday's events. We politely ask the public refrain from continuing to report this matter to us because an investigation is already taking place." Over the weekend, the police announced they were looking into footage from the West Holts stage following both Kneecap and Bob Vylan's performances.
