Australia, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, is home to some of the most dynamic cities in the Southern Hemisphere. Each of the largest cities in Australia showcases a unique blend of natural beauty, modern architecture and diverse communities.
From the iconic skyline of Sydney to the cultural heart of Melbourne, Australia's largest cities offer a mix of urban sophistication and outdoor adventure. Here are the continent's most populous cities, based on data from World Population Review.
Sydney is famous for its iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Known for its beautiful beaches — including Bondi and Manly — the city offers a vibrant arts scene, world-class dining and a thriving economy.
Melbourne is also considered Australia's cultural capital, known for its coffee culture, street art and live music scene. Landmarks like Federation Square, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Melbourne Cricket Ground highlight the city's appeal. Its diverse neighborhoods and laneway cafes add to its charm.

Located on Australia's west coast, Perth is known for its pristine beaches, Kings Park and Botanic Garden and the nearby Swan Valley wine region. The city's mix of urban sophistication and access to nature makes it a standout destination for residents and visitors alike.

Ironically, the population of this national capital has a significantly lower population than other capital cities on this list.
Located north of Sydney, Newcastle is a harbor city known for its beaches, coal exports and historic sites. The Newcastle Ocean Baths and the nearby Hunter Valley wine region make it a popular destination for locals and visitors.
Located south of Sydney, Wollongong is a coastal city with stunning beaches and a vibrant arts scene. Its proximity to the Illawarra Escarpment provides opportunities for outdoor activities, while the Nan Tien Temple highlights its cultural diversity.
Located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Logan City is one of Australia's most multicultural communities, known for its diverse food scene and thriving arts culture.
The city is home to the Daisy Hill Conservation Park, where visitors can spot koalas in their natural habitat. With a mix of urban centers and green spaces, Logan offers a balance of modern amenities and outdoor recreation.
Geelong, located southwest of Melbourne, is a growing city with a strong industrial history and a revitalized waterfront. It serves as a gateway to the Great Ocean Road, one of Australia's most scenic coastal drives.
Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, is known for its historic charm and natural beauty. Landmarks like Salamanca Place, Mount Wellington and the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) attract visitors from around the world.

With a growing arts scene, vibrant cafés and proximity to national parks, Toowoomba blends country charm with cultural sophistication.

Now That's Interest If you're familiar with Australian geography, you may have noticed that none of the biggest cities are in the Northern Territory. Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory, is also the state's largest city. The region experiences extreme heat, seasonal monsoons and vast arid landscapes, making large-scale urban development challenging. Historically, major population centers grew along the more temperate and fertile coastal regions, where trade, agriculture, and infrastructure could thrive.

Tyra Banks left LA life behind and moved family to Australia

Tyra Banks traded in her life in the United States to continue building her business in Australia. Banks, who founded an ice cream company called SMiZE and Dream, revealed she ditched her Los Angeles lifestyle for down under during an appearance on "Today with Jenna and Friends." "I've been going to Australia a lot because we were making a lot of our ice cream there in this big facility, doing our recipes," she said. "I just fell in love with it. Every time I went back, and went back … and the three countries that eat the most ice cream: America, New Zealand and Australia. So I was like, 'I'm happy here and they love to eat some ice cream, so, are we going to do this family?' And we did." Banks chose to take the leap of faith and permanently moved with her boyfriend, Louis Bélanger-Martin, and the model's 9-year-old son, York Banks Asla. The "America's Next Top Model" star shares her son with ex Erik Asla. The 51-year-old model gave "Today with Jenna and Friends" a glimpse into her new life. "Rise and shine. Welcome to my home in Sydney, Australia," Banks said in a video she filmed herself. "It's 6:30 a.m., and that means it's time to make my coffee." Banks took viewers along to see the sights of Sydney, including Tumbalong Park. "People come from all over Sydney to enjoy this park," she explained. "They have what we call a little mini water park. There's swings and stuff for kids. There's this new place that they've built for the bigger kids that you really can't get your kid away from. So be careful when you come here." Banks showed other Sydney attractions, including the Sydney Opera House, the ferry and Darling Harbour – a waterfront spot where Banks plans to open an ice cream shop. "Look at the water, so amazing. And over there is where my future ice cream dream is going to come true," Banks revealed in the video. "Making ice cream has been a lifelong dream of mine, and it's all happening right here in Australia. This idea is a tribute to my mama, Carolyn." The former "Dancing with the Stars" host confirmed they are building a "3,000-square-foot flagship store." "Australia has been a dream come true for me and my family," Banks added. Banks told People last May that she had been living and working in Australia, and that she rang in her 50th birthday "in Australia with my family." While on "Sunrise," Banks revealed that her Los Angeles home burned down in the January fires that ravaged the area. "I lost my house," the model said. "I haven't really talked about it, but, yeah, I have." "I just didn't want to pull a lot of attention to me," she explained. "I feel like there's a lot of people that need that attention, so I haven't really talked about it, but I can't sit here and not tell the truth that, yeah, we lost our house."

Tyra Banks hails life in Australia a 'dream come true'

Tyra Banks' new life in Australia has been a "dream come true". The 51-year-old model began dividing her time between Los Angeles and Sydney almost two years ago, along with partner Louis Belanger-Martin and nine-year-old son York - whose father is her former partner Erik Asla - and after spending more of her time Down Under, she couldn't be happier. Sharing her typical day in Sydney on 'Today with Jenna and Friends' on Monday (14.04.25), she said: 'Now the best parts of Sydney are the views, and we get to commute by ferry. This is beautiful Sydney Harbour at night. 'Australia has been a dream come true for me and my family.' The 'America's Next Top Model' host explained she "fell in love" with Australia while making frequent visits for her ice cream company, SMiZE and Dream. She said: 'I've been going to Australia a lot because we were making a lot of our ice cream there in this big facility, doing our recipes. 'I just fell in love with it. Every time I went back, and went back … and the three countries that eat the most ice cream: America, New Zealand and Australia. So I was like, 'I'm happy here and they love to eat some ice cream, so, are we going to do this family?' And we did.' In her video of her typical day, Tyra started off in her kitchen. She said: 'Rise and shine. Welcome to my home in Sydney, Australia. It's 6:30 a.m., and that means it's time to make my coffee." She then took a trip to one of her "favourite places" - but offered a warning for parents. She said: 'This is Tumbalong Park. People come from all over Sydney to enjoy this park. "They have what we call a little mini water park. There's swings and stuff for kids. There's this new place that they've built for the bigger kids that you really can't get your kid away from. So be careful when you come here.' Tyra is in the process of opening a '3,000-square-foot flagship store" for her ice cream venture, and showed off where she is planning to open. She said: 'This is Darling Harbour. Look at the water, so amazing. And over there is where my future ice cream dream is going to come true. 'Making ice cream has been a lifelong dream of mine and it's all happening right here in Australia. This idea is a tribute to my mama Carolyn.' The Victoria's Secret model then took viewers to see the city's "most iconic sight", the Sydney Opera House. She said: 'I think we know what that beautiful, beautiful building is right there. 'I just saw a show there. Do you know that being in Australia, I actually go see live shows at the Opera House. It's just like a normal thing for us to do.'

These are the 10 friendliest states in the US. Is Arizona one of them? See the ranking

Even though Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is widely known as "America's friendliest airport," Arizona surprisingly was ranked the 39th friendliest state in the country, according to a new study. World Population Review published a study ranking the friendliness of each state, as voted by tourists in 2023. The study used two categories of data to determine which states were the most welcoming to newcomers. World Population Review used the results of a poll from Big 7 Travel where 2.5 million social media users voted on which states were the friendliest. The "friendliest states" study also used findings from Zippia's 2021 study on the rudest states, which highlighted the percentage of rude drivers in the state, average tip percentage, amount of cursing to customer service workers and how rude the rest of the country finds the state. However, World Population Review said it was only referencing the tipping rate in its rankings. On Arizona's low ranking, Big 7 Travel said, "Locals are generally mellow enough. It's the sort of place where strangers will strike up a conversation when waiting in line, but don't expect huge grins." Big 7 Travel also described Arizonans as having a "nice indifference" toward other people, unlike the Southern charm or Midwest nice of the friendlier states. Here are the friendliest, least friendly and rudest states in the country. What does spring in Arizona feel like? Here's what 4 weather experts predict for 2025 Minnesota Tennessee South Carolina Texas Wyoming Indiana Colorado Kansas Oklahoma Hawaii New York Arkansas Delaware Massachusetts New Jersey Washington New Hampshire Nevada Florida Rhode Island This article originally appeared on Arizona Republic: Which states are the nicest?
