‘Shouldn't play': Mum's controversial playground opinion sparks debate

News.com.au2 days ago

A mum has shared a controversial take on parenting etiquette, and it might just cut you some slack next time you're at the park with your children.
Amanda, a mum-of-three and therapist, took to her Instagram to share her theory on why parents should simply sit on the bench at the park rather than play with their kids.
'I saw a reel that said parents at the park should get off the bench and play with their kids,' she said in the clip.
'No,' Amanda, who goes by @free.as.amother, added abruptly.
Expanding on her thoughts in the caption, she noted, 'God forbid, we, I don't know, let the playground be for kids?
'A space where they get to experience some freedom, explore, interact and engage with other children without their parent breathing down their neck?'
She then assured parents, 'it's okay' if you don't want to be the adult scaling the playground.
'On social media, parents who take their children outside and out of the house are called lazy for sitting on a park bench while their kids play at the playground,' she concluded.
Her video quickly amassed thousands of views and countless supportive comments.
'I play every day all day. The park is the ONE TIME they are there to play independently and with others their age lol,' one fellow parent wrote.
'Independent play is soo important! Plus, mama needs her chill time,' a second agreed.
'OMG the purpose of the playground is for them to socialise with other children. They don't need helicopter parents breathing down their necks,' a third echoed.
'As a former preschool teacher, thank you. If you can see them from where you're sitting, you're close enough,' said someone else.
However, others weren't convinced. 'Uhhhh, I respectfully decline,' said one user.
'So sad you wouldn't want to play with your kids,' another Instagrammer wrote.
Others agreed that they liked the concept, but believed playgrounds weren't safe enough for children to play alone.
'Maybe when they stop making playgrounds with random drop-offs I can be chill enough to sit down. I wanna sit,' one parent explained.
Others also shared their 'you do you' approaches, with one stating: 'If the park is your place to bond with your child, that's cool. If the park is where you encourage independent exploration, that's perfectly okay too. Neither is bad!'

Brad Pitt's daughter Shiloh, 19, debuts new moniker after dropping famous dad's last name

Shiloh Jolie has entered a new era. The daughter of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, 19, appeared at the launch of Isabel Marant's capsule collection with Net-A-Porter Thursday in Los Angeles — and she dropped a new moniker for the occasion. In a press release obtained by Page Six, Shiloh was credited as choreographer for an original dance number at the event — but she was listed as 'Shi Joli,' a moniker that pays homage to her famous mother while shortening her legal name. The dance featured dancers Tako Suzuki and Keoni Rose and was accompanied by singer Luella's performance of Naïve. The event, described as an 'intimate sunset dinner,' was held at Schindler's Oliver House in the Los Angeles enclave of Silver Lake. A-listers including Milla Jovovich, Alison brie, January Jones, Rachel Bilson, and more were in attendance at the soiree. Shiloh, who is frequently spotted heading to dance class in Los Angeles, famously requested to drop her father's last name on her 18th birthday in May 2024 — a change that was made official in August. After a judge signed off on the ruling, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt legally became Shiloh Nouvel Jolie. She was said to have done the legwork on her own — without involving the Eternals actress. 'Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself, so Angie doesn't know and can't speak for it,' a source told Entertainment Tonight at the time. In a July statement to Page Six, Shiloh's lawyer Peter Levine said in part that the teen made 'an independent and significant decision following painful events' in dropping 'Pitt' from her last name. Shiloh isn't the only of her famous siblings to have dropped the name following their parents' split and bitter divorce, which was finalised in December 2024 after an eight year battle. When Zahara Jolie-Pitt, 20, declared herself at Alpha Kappa Alpha's sorority induction ceremony at Spelman College in 2023, she shouted, 'Zahara Marley Jolie' in video of the event that circulated via social media. Amid the famous actors' custody dispute in 2021, a source claimed to Us Weekly that their oldest child, Maddox, 'doesn't use Pitt as his last name on documents that aren't legal and instead uses Jolie. Maddox wants to legally change his last name to Jolie, which Angelina has said she doesn't support.' Pitt, 61, and Jolie, 49, who wed in 2014, welcomed Shiloh on May 27, 2006, and her twin siblings Knox and Vivienne on July 12, 2008. Pitt officially adopted Jolie's adopted children Maddox, 23, and Zahara in 2005, and Pax, 21, in 2006. The F1 actor was said to have been 'aware and upset' when Shiloh legally dropped his last name. 'He's never felt more joy than when she was born,' an insider told People in June 2024. 'He always wanted a daughter.' 'The reminders that he's lost his children is, of course, not easy for Brad,' they continued. 'He loves his children and misses them. It's very sad.' In May, Pitt broke his silence on finalising the high-profile divorce from Angelina. When asked by GQ if he experienced 'relief,' he said, 'No, I don't think it was that major of a thing. Just something coming to fruition. Legally,' he told the outlet.

Nicolas Cage unrecognisable on set of new sports movie Madden

Nicolas Cage has been spotted looking almost unrecognisable on the set of his new movie, Madden. Pictures from the set of the upcoming sports biopic showed the 61-year-old's stellar transform into NFL legend John Madden, who served as head coach of the Oakland Raiders before becoming a successful sports commentator and lending his name, voice and persona to the popular Madden NFL video game series with EA Sports. To step into the late sporting legend's shoes, Cage sported a vintage blue tracksuit, white button-up shirt and light brown wig all while reportedly wearing a fat suit on the Atlanta, Georgia, set. Fellow Oscar winner Christian Bale also stars in the movie, portraying Al Davis, who was Madden's close friend and former owner of the Raiders. Last month, Amazon MGM Studios shared a first look at Cage and Bale dressed in '70s fashion on set, with their characters showing off the Super Bowl rings they won in 1977 after leading the Raiders to victory. 'Your first-look at Nicolas Cage as John Madden and Christian Bale as Al Davis on set of the upcoming film, Madden. Production is currently underway,' read a caption on Instagram. 'The film follows Madden's remarkable journey – from his Super Bowl-winning partnership with Al Davis and the Raiders, to creating Madden NFL, and becoming one of the most iconic voices in football history.' The biopic also stars John Mulaney as EA founder Trip Hawkins, Kathryn Hahn as Madden's wife Virginia, and Sienna Miller as Al's wife Carol. Madden sadly died in 2021 aged 85. No specific cause of death was publicly disclosed. 'Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others,' NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement at the time. 'There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.'

Gabby Thomas harassed by gambler at track meet in United States

Three-time Olympic track gold medallist Gabby Thomas says she was verbally abused at a meet in Philadelphia last weekend, the latest incident of harassment the American has reported this year. Thomas, who won gold in the 200 metres, as well as the 4x100m and 4x400m relays at the Paris Games, said in a post on X that a man followed her around at the Grand Slam Track meet while she took pictures for fans and signed autographs, shouting insults at her. "Anybody who enables him online is gross," Thomas wrote. Thomas's post was in response to another on X that contained a video of a person heckling Thomas while she was on the starting line, shouting "you're a choke artist — you're going down, Gabby". "I made Gabby lose by heckling her. And it made my parlay win," the social media user wrote, with a screenshot of two online multi-leg bets. The track circuit said in a statement: "Grand Slam Track is conducting a full investigation into the reprehensible behaviour captured on video. "We are working to identify the individual involved and will take appropriate action as necessary. "We will implement additional safeguards to help prevent incidents like this in the future. Let us be clear, despicable behaviour like this will not be tolerated." Thomas finished third overall in the short sprints group for the Philadelphia meet, the third in the novel circuit's inaugural season. One of America's brightest stars in track, the 28-year-old Thomas catapulted to mainstream fame after her breakout performance in Paris, gracing the cover of American Vogue magazine and appearing on US talk shows. But Thomas has also suffered the darker side of fame, describing on TikTok this year how she was stalked by a group of men at several airports, as social media gives female athletes greater exposure. The incident at Grand Slam Track also reflected a growing link between sports betting and harassment, with female tennis players, including Caroline Garcia, pointing to "unhealthy betting" as a key culprit. Major tennis governing bodies moved to combat online abuse and published a report last year that attributed nearly half of abusive social media posts to angry gamblers. "Thank you for pointing out this disgusting behaviour," retired former world 10,000m silver medallist Kara Goucher wrote on X. "You are exposing the crap that women go through and will eventually help other women as well." Reuters
