How Hard Is It to Install an EV Charger?

If there's one thing that's most likely to cause a hiccup in a typical charger installation, it's your home's electrical system.
One national contractor told me that about 20% of their installations run into electrical complications. Will Shippee, a director at Schneider Electric, said that homes built before the 1970s are the most likely candidates. (Disclosure: The author was previously employed by a subsidiary of Schneider Electric and worked with Shippee on one project.)
Here's the issue: Your home gets a limited amount of power from the grid, measured in amperes (amps for short). Older homes, especially if they heat with fossil fuel, may have only 100 amps coming in from the street, and maybe less. Want to know how many amps of electricity your home has to work with? Look for the breaker switch that's set away from the others in your panel — the number tells you what you're working with. In my home, I have 200 amps, which is pretty typical these days, though older homes often have less. Liam McCabe/NYT Wirecutter
That's plenty of capacity for lights, gadgets, and a typical suite of major appliances. But things start getting tight once you add modern, high-draw items. A typical Level 2 charger needs 50 or 60 amps alone. Draw too much at once, and you'll trip the entire box. It's an inconvenience at best, but over time, it also becomes a fire-safety issue because breakers are only meant to trip a certain number of times before they lose their ability to trip as needed.
The National Electrical Code has a formula to figure out when you're at risk of overloading your panel. Not all electricians pay attention to it, but they're supposed to, and your charger installer might tell you that you need to do something to meet the code. Not sure if you have enough electrical capacity to add an EV charger? An electrician will give you the best answer, but you can get an idea by adding up the numbers on all the double-wide breakers in your box. The traditional fix: Here, you'll upgrade your service connection to the grid. About two-thirds of the experts I've spoken with think this is usually the right path for homes with under 150 amps of service. Haas told me that most of his customers who need a workaround for an EV charger end up going this route, because it gives them freedom to add more high-draw appliances in the future.
Service upgrades are never cheap. You'll need to hire an electrician to upgrade your entire panel, and then you need to pay the utility company to run the new connection. It'll likely cost at least a few thousand dollars. I paid $4,500 for this upgrade a few years ago, which is typical for my part of the country. But the costs can go much higher.
If you'd need to excavate the service line, especially from under a public sidewalk, the cost can rise well into five figures, according to Shippee and other experts and homeowners I've heard from. 'It depends on your lovely utility,' Shippee said.
Your entire neighborhood could also be running short on electrical service and may need broader service upgrades to the wiring and transformers. Stephanie Groll, from the City of Cambridge Department of Transportation in Massachusetts, said she's heard from multiple constituents who have run into this problem when they've tried to apply for a service upgrade.
The modern workaround: The other option is a load controller. Broadly, this is a system that monitors your home's energy use and then selectively cuts the power to one or more circuits if you're about to overload the breaker.
There are at least a dozen of these that I know of, and each one handles the problem a little differently. Several of them cost less than even a straightforward service upgrade; others save money only if you're facing a seriously pricey service upgrade but offer other advantages.
The right choice for your home depends on how crowded your service already is, whether you're willing to have some items turned off at certain times, and how much future-proofing you want.
I won't get into all of the nuances, but here are some leads to start to look into: EV chargers with load control: Wallbox, Tesla, and Emporia are popular brands that offer a load controller in their EV chargers, though you might also need to buy a separate power meter to make it work. Still, this is often the most cost-effective option. (The Emporia model we've linked here is more expensive than the model we recommend in our EV charger guide, which does not have a load-control feature. The Tesla model linked here is the same one that we recommend in the guide.)

Smart panels: These are the most expensive kind of load-control systems, typically coming in at around a few thousand dollars after installation. But they offer a measure of elegance and futureproofing that's hard to get with other load controllers because you can control several circuits, not just the EV charger, through an app.
A smart panel could be especially useful if you plan to add battery backup to your home, maybe through one of the bidirectional EV charging systems finally making their way into the real world. Lumin makes a sub-panel that lets you manage up to 12 circuits. Schneider Electric's Square D QO Smart Panel works with modules (sourced from Savant) for whichever circuits you'd like to control. On the Span Smart Panel, every circuit is smart by default. None of these are inexpensive, but they might beat the cost of a difficult service upgrade.
A hacky alternative: Maybe you don't have the capacity to add a 50- or 60-amp circuit to your home for a typical Level 2 charger, but you could, for example, fit another 30 amps. A slower Level 2 charger is still quick enough to completely recharge almost any EV overnight, and this could be a good way to balance cost savings and charging speed.

The news giant has retained K Street heavyweight Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck to represent it on a range of issues affecting the industry, from encroachments on press freedoms to the threats posed by artificial intelligence. — The Times' parent company first hired Brownstein last year, but the firm's work didn't trigger lobbying registration requirements until April, according to a spokesperson for the company and a draft disclosure filing shared with PI. More than half a dozen lobbyists are listed as working on the account for Brownstein: Republicans Marc Lampkin, Will Moschella and Greta Joynes and Democrats Al Mottur, Alice Lugo, Rob Robillard and John Menges. — One issue drawing the paper off the lobbying sidelines is the increasing ubiquity of artificial intelligence and the thorny issues it poses for news organizations. The Times, for example, introduced a suite of AI tools for internal use earlier this year. And many news outlets (including the Times, POLITICO and parent company Axel Springer) have partnered with AI companies on licensing deals and consumer-facing products. — But NYT is also one of several publishers facing off in court against ChatGPT creator OpenAI or other AI companies accused of copyright infringement for using outlets' content to train its models without permission or compensation. — In a congressional hearing on the issue last year, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) warned that AI was 'literally eating away at the lifeblood of our democracy' and contributing to an 'existential crisis' among local publishers in particular. The last Congress also mulled legislation that would require online platforms like Google and Meta to negotiate with and pay news publishers in exchange for hosting their content. — At the same time, Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger has been repeatedly sounding the alarm about threats to press freedom both around the world and from leaders in the U.S. — In a speech last month that was republished as an essay in the Times, Sulzberger took note of President Donald Trump's escalating pressure campaign against news outlets already in his second term — from curtailing access to certain mainstream outlets in favor of friendlier partisan ones to suing, seeking to defund or opening federal probes of others and calling for the jailing of reporters. — 'It takes significant time, effort, and resources to produce The New York Times's fact-based original journalism and other content. Because of that, we have for years taken steps to protect and defend our intellectual property rights and uphold its value,' a Times spokesperson told PI in a statement. — 'In line with these efforts, we have engaged a Washington, DC-based government affairs firm to ensure our rights and legal protections are clearly and accurately represented among policymakers and regulators focused on publishing, media, copyright law and press freedoms,' it added. — The Times hasn't lobbied at the federal level since 2014, when the company paid Keightley & Ashner $30,000 for three quarters of work related to a pension issue. ALL ABOUT AVA: A coalition of budget airlines this week launched the Association of Value Airlines, a new industry group aimed at boosting low-budget carriers in policy debates often dominated by the trade association representing major carriers, Airlines for America. AVA's founding members include Allegiant, Avelo, Frontier, Spirit and Sun Country. — Chris Brown currently serves as the group's interim executive director. He previously was vice president of legislative and regulatory affairs at larger industry trade association Airlines for America, and lobbied for low-fare airlines at the National Air Carrier Association. — In an interview with PI, Brown said the goal of AVA is to amplify the priorities of budget airlines, as larger organizations encompassing a range of air carriers often lead to competing priorities. PAUL WEISS LOSES ANOTHER BIG NAME: Another prominent lawyer has left Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison after the law firm struck a deal with the Trump administration to avoid being punished by an executive order. — Damian Williams, the former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, left the firm after just five months to join Jenner & Block as the co-chair of its litigation department and investigations, compliance and defense practice. — Williams served as one of the nation's top federal prosecutors during the Biden administration, securing several high-profile convictions including those of former crypto kingmaker Sam Bankman-Fried and former Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.). — Williams is the latest in a string of notable departures from Paul Weiss in the aftermath of its deal with the White House. OpenAI appeals court order forcing it to preserve all ChatGPT data

OpenAI has appealed a court ruling from last month that forces it to retain ChatGPT data indefinitely as part of a copyright violation case brought by The New York Times in 2023. CEO Sam Altman said in a tweet on X that the judge's decision "compromises our users' privacy" and "sets a bad precedent." In May, federal judge Ona T. Wang ordered OpenAI to preserve and segregate all ChatGPT output log data that would otherwise be deleted due to a user request. She said that the ruling was justified because the volume of deleted conversations is "significant." The directive notes that the judge asked OpenAI if there was a way to anonymize the data to address users' privacy concerns. The New York Times sought the order so that it can accurately track how often OpenAI violates its IP, including instances when users requested deletion of chats. A federal judge allowed the original case to proceed, agreeing with the NYT 's argument that OpenAI and Microsoft's tech had induced users to plagiarize its materials. In a FAQ on its site, OpenAI painted the order as a privacy issue without addressing the millions of alleged copyright violations. "This fundamentally conflicts with the privacy commitments we have made to our users," the company wrote. "It abandons long-standing privacy norms and weakens privacy protections." OpenAI noted that the order "does not impact ChatGPT Enterprise or ChatGPT Edu customers." The NYT and other AI copyright cases are still ongoing, as courts have not yet decided whether OpenAI, Google and other companies infringed copyrights on a massive scale by scraping material from the internet. The tech companies have argued that training is protected by "fair use" copyright law and that the lawsuits threaten the AI industry. Creators of that content, in turn, argue that AI harms their own livelihoods by stealing and reproducing works with little to no compensation.

Midea Is Voluntarily Recalling Our Favorite Air Conditioner

The Midea U genuinely changed the window air conditioner world, providing quiet, efficient cooling without holding an entire window hostage for the summer. But in the first few years after its release, we began hearing from readers who had noticed mold growing on a fan visible inside the unit just behind the grille where the air flows out. To be fair, this can happen with any air conditioner. 'I'd venture to guess that upwards of 70 percent, maybe more of the AC units and mini-splits we encounter, if you took a flashlight and looked at the fan, you'd see mold,' Gabriel Erde-Cohen, CEO of We Clean Heat Pumps, told us. 'Sometimes, the mold is just more apparent.' We began reporting on this concern in summer 2023. We tried and failed to replicate a mold issue ourselves, and we disassembled our own Midea U in order to better understand its airflow and identify some problem points. We also reached out to Midea to ask about the issue. The company's answer confirmed our findings: The fan, and thus any mold growth on it, is more visible in the U than it is in other ACs. Also, the problem can be more prevalent in rooms where people have installed oversize air conditioners, a practice that we discourage. We then wrote that the remedy, for many people with an appropriately sized AC, is to keep the fan running to dry out moisture and make sure the AC is tilted slightly backward to help with drainage. At least two people filed formal complaints with the Consumer Product Safety Commission about the mold problem. (Many such complaints are posted publicly at We don't know when Midea started looking into the issue, considering that it's been evident for years, or why this particular action is happening now. But we did speak with Jonathan Midgett, PhD, the consumer ombudsman at the CPSC, who serves as a sort of public liaison for the agency's internal processes. Although Midgett wasn't familiar with this particular case, he did say that a two-year timeline would be reasonable for a company to investigate these sorts of complaints and develop a plan of action to address the problem. 'Sometimes complaints do take years to get traction,' he explained. 'You get one or two and just ignore it, then there's three or four, and now it's looking like there might be a pattern.' Companies do have some responsibility for mold mitigation, according to the CPSC. 'I know that it sounds like it's not a mechanical failure, but it is a mechanical failure if there's something wrong with the plastic or there's not enough airflow to prevent mold growth,' Midgett told us, citing a 2013 mold-related recall of nearly one million Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play sleeper cribs. We tested multiple sizes and types of air conditioners to confirm: A too-big AC can't balance heat and humidity.
