Son finds mum's winning EuroMillions ticket three days after her tragic death
Liam Carter, 34, was sorting through his late mother Anne's belongings after she passed away at the age of 67, and was staggered to find a winning lottery ticket
A man whose mum sadly passed away has revealed how he found her winning lottery ticket just days later - and it was worth a staggering £18,000.
While sorting through his mother Anne's possessions, Liam Carter from Aberdeen found a tucked-away envelope in a kitchen drawer containing a EuroMillions ticket dated for the draw on April 18 - two days after she passed away at the age of 67. Liam, 34, recalled discovering a note written by his mum on the ticket, with the words "don't forget" - a poignant message he now cherishes as her last gift to him.
He said: "It was in her handwriting - she'd written 'Sat draw – don't forget!' on the front. I nearly ignored it, but something told me to check. I scanned it using the National Lottery app, and it said it was a winning ticket - but I'd have to call the lottery line."
Upon calling the lottery line that Saturday, Liam, originally hailing from Hampshire, was stunned to learn the true value of the ticket. The numbers 20, 27, 35, 39, and 48 were a near-perfect match, missing only the Lucky Stars numbers 03 and 08, AberdeenLive reports.
Liam told Playcasino.com: "When they told me it was worth £18,043, I just froze. I must've gone quiet on the phone. It didn't feel real. She never won anything big in her life - and now this."
Liam revealed his mum would play the lottery every week and always stored her tickets in a special drawer in the kitchen. "She always said if she ever won, the money would be for me," he said. "And even though she never knew about this win, it really felt like something she left behind for me. Like one final gift."
With plans to use the winnings for a flat deposit - a goal his mum had always supported - Liam is embracing this turn of good fortune.
A spokesperson from Playcasino.com said: "Liam's story shows that the lottery isn't just about money - it's about meaning. In this case, a forgotten ticket became something powerful and emotional. It's a reminder that even the smallest moments can carry the biggest impact."
This comes after a EuroMillions winner who bagged a whopping £148millio n reportedly ditched his huge mansion and moved in with his 80-year-old mum. Former postman Adrian Bayford, 54, won the staggering jackpot along with his then-wife Gillian in 2012, but is now giving up the luxury seven-bed country home he shares with his fiancée Tracey Biles.
The couple will move to his 80-year-old mum's modest four-bed home he purchased for his parents. A friend said: "He thinks he can just downsize and have a simple life and go back to how things used to be before he was mega rich.
"The house he is leaving is one he bought with his ex Gillian and where he split from his other fiancées so it's full of bad memories for him."

Live EuroMillions and Thunderball draw for Tuesday, June 10 with huge £208m prize
Someone could make history tonight as a record-breaking EuroMillions draw takes place. After multiple rollovers, the EuroMillions jackpot is stuck at an eye-watering £208 million - the highest National Lottery prize ever. The huge jackpot is there to be won because nobody scooped last Tuesday's £199 prize. That in turn rolled over to last Friday when the draw again failed to produce a jackpot winner. The £208m jackpot is frozen at that level for five draws, and if nobody claims it after that period there will be a 'Must Be Won' draw in which the jackpot will be shared amongst the winners of a prize tier. If someone does scoop the prize it will be the biggest ever seen in the UK. Andy Carter, advisor at National Lottery operator Allwyn, said: "A win of this magnitude would create the biggest National Lottery winner this country has ever seen - making a single UK winner instantly richer than the likes of Dua Lipa and Harry Kane while also landing them at the number one spot on the National Lottery's biggest wins list. "The EuroMillions jackpot is now capped, so any money that would have gone into increasing the jackpot now boosts prizes in the next winning prize tier, meaning that we could see multiple UK players banking huge prizes for matching just the five main numbers and one Lucky Star." The EuroMillions draw takes place every Tuesday and Friday and a ticket costs £2.50. That includes automatic entry into the UK Millionaire Maker draw which creates new UK millionaires every week. If you entered the Thunderball, you stand to win up to £500,000. How many numbers do you need to win? If you have got two numbers or one number and two lucky stars or better then you are a winner. Players must match all five main numbers and two lucky star numbers to claim the jackpot. The Thunderball draw will also be made tonight and the results will also be displayed below. The Thunderball draw will take place at 8pm, with the EuroMillions draw to follow at around 8.45pm. You can follow all the results as the draw is made below. Good luck! Lottery win couple thought news of £1m prize was a 'joke'
A chef who has supported his wife through multiple sclerosis said winning £1m on the National Lottery "means everything".Ian Steele, of Heywood, Greater Manchester, said he started "shaking like a leaf" when he realised his Euromillions Millionaire Raffle prize was not a the 53-year-old called his wife, Nick, who was diagnosed with MS 18 years ago, to tell her the news she too thought it was a "cruel joke"."It was only when the lady from The National Lottery turned up to pay us and handed us a bottle of champagne that I think I finally let myself believe it was real," he said. Mr Steele said he went off to work after checking the National Lottery app which confirmed he had no matching numbers. But during his break he spotted an email which said he had won a prize. "I thought no I haven't, I've already checked."I logged into the app and still only had £1.50 in my account, but then it sunk in. In the draw results the raffle number was lit up in blue with a tick next to it."Mr Steele won by matching the raffle code on the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker - a unique code on each ticket which is entered into a raffle, with a top prize of £1m. Mr Steele added that, because of Nick's diagnosis while pregnant with their daughter Chloe, the couple had not always been able to enjoy the things many people took for granted."Nick had to medically retire from her role as a specialist dental nurse, supporting and caring for extremely sick people at Manchester Hospital. "While it was absolutely the right thing to do, it made things that little bit more difficult. We've had to be careful with money and not splurge," he the win now means the couple have a chance to fulfil lifelong dreams. "I'm the dreamer in the house and always said that if we won big, we'd treat ourselves," Mr Steele said the first thing daughter Chloe asked was if the win meant the family could go to Disneyland."We're big Star Wars fans and it's something we've always talked and dreamed about – and now that dream will come true," Mr Steele added that he planned to continue his job as a school chef manager but added that the win "takes the financial weight off our shoulders".
