27th annual Spring Skim Jam draws record boarders and top talent

Yahoo07-04-2025

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Hundreds of athletes, from seasoned professionals to enthusiastic newcomers, gathered this weekend to showcase their skills on the water and sand for the 27th annual Spring Skim Jam.
Skim boarders were judged on their tricks, speed, and ability to navigate with challenging conditions of the shoreline. With ideal surf conditions, this year's event has brought out some of the best in the sport.
'It being my first pro contest is huge. I wasn't really expecting to even make it to the final, but I was able to just work through it and work through the win, and I was able to make it into the final,' skim boarder Nicole Philips said.

The competition was created by the owners of Mr. Surf's Surf Shop off Front Beach Road. Over time, Shore lb. took the reins. There were multiple divisions for all ages to participate in the contest.
Some range from under 8 to over 50.
This year's event broke attendance records after having the most pro woman competitors in 27 years and the largest overall skim boarder attendance.
'We're trying to grow the amateur part of it, but we're also trying to help grow the female portion of skin boarding in general with the pro and amateur women trying to help support them and get them to more contests,' Shore lb. CEO Chris Ellison said.
Ellison says the Panama City Beach waves added to the challenge.
'But that was one of the parts of why we wanted to bring it back because it's part of the tour, it's a part of history. And we also believe that here in on the Gulf Coast and in the Panhandle specifically, that there's tons of skim boarders here,' Ellison said.

The event wrapped up with an award ceremony. Winners received trophies and prizes. Some skim board winners had the option of going pro.
Panama City Beach was stop 2 of the Shore lb.'s three-stop triple crown tour competition.
Their final stop will be in Vero Beach on May 17.

Poplar Springs hosts 15th annual summer showdown

HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) — For two weeks each summer, rural Holmes County transforms into a hub for high school basketball as Poplar Springs hosts its annual Summer Showdown. Now in its 15th year, the tournament has become a staple of the off-season. The varsity boys portion of the event tipped off Monday and Tuesday, and wrapped up its final day of action on Thursday morning. The competition has featured teams from across the Florida Panhandle and Alabama's Wiregrass region, playing in round-robin matchups from sunup to sundown across both the new and old gymnasiums at Poplar Springs School. Twelve local teams from Walton, Calhoun, Jackson, Washington, and Holmes counties took part in the three-day event. Poplar Springs head boys basketball coach Jared Owen said the summer tournament provides a rare and valuable opportunity for programs to test themselves in unique conditions. 'Some teams you see on a regular basis, some teams you see just during the summer,' Owen said. 'So there's exciting opportunities and chances throughout. Then you get to see a lot of how your players respond to different teams and different disadvantages, like playing back-to-back. You don't do that during the season, but you do during the summer.' Week two of the summer basketball round-robin action will continue with the varsity girls basketball teams on June 9, 10, and 12. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. News 13 awards Scholar Athletes of the Year

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) — After another school year of honoring standout student-athletes across the Panhandle, WMBB News 13 has named its 2024-2025 Scholar Athletes of the Year. This year's Scholar Athletes of the Year are Gillian Peaden of North Bay Haven Charter Academy and Jackson Welch of Malone High School. As part of the annual honor, both Peaden and Welch received a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of the attorneys of Perry & Young P.A. and WMBB News 13. Both seniors were recognized not only for their excellence in sports but also for their academic achievements and leadership on campus. Peaden was a leader on North Bay Haven's girls weightlifting team, helping the Buccaneers become one of the top programs in the region. She finished her senior season as a state champion, capping off a decorated high school career. In the classroom, Peaden maintained high academic standards, earning admission to the University of Florida. However, she plans to begin her college journey locally at Gulf Coast State College while continuing to compete in weightlifting at the national level. 'There were times when I was supposed to work out and I just told Paille, 'Hey, I really need to study,'' Peaden said. 'I had gym third period and a test fourth period. I'd reschedule my workout, but my grades had to come first.' Welch, the valedictorian of Malone High School, has been a four-year starter on the Tigers boys basketball team and is regarded as one of the top three-point shooters in the Southeast. This fall, he'll join the Chipola College men's basketball program as a preferred walk-on. Welch said staying disciplined on both ends, academics and athletics, has always been his approach. 'A lot of times guys just want to focus on their sport,' Welch said. 'But to be a true scholar-athlete, you need to put equal time into your studies. It's just as important.' Walton County TDC pulls support for local PGA golf event

WALTON COUNTY, Fla (WMBB) – The idea of a PGA tournament in Walton County is on shaky ground. The county's Tourist Development Council backed it in April. But now, TDC board members say the price tag is too steep. PGA Officials originally proposed a five-year title sponsorship agreement starting at $6 million, with a 5% escalator each year. The total cost would be roughly $35 million. Walton County considers $35 million investment for 2026 PGA tournament 'You know, $30 plus million is, you know, very much a large amount of money to to dedicate to anything, you know, whether it's a PGA Tour, whether it's, you know, concerts, whatever that may be, you know, that's just a lot of money,' Walton County Tourism Director Matt Algarin said. PGA representative Charles Hamrick told commissioners the county would receive promotional ads and extensive media coverage that could mean millions for Walton County's tourism industry. Commissioners asked the TDC to look for sponsors to help underwrite the county's costs. They also asked Hamrick to explore a shorter contract to lower costs. The PGA agreed to shorten the contract, but won't negotiate the price. TDC board members unanimously voted to withdraw their support. Walton County's TDC looks to reinstate executive director 'This year, we've seen almost a 10% decrease in tourist development taxes. I'm concerned and the council is concerned about having to be required to spend $6 million plus over the next couple of years without really understanding what we have in the reserves, should a catastrophic storm occur, and being able to rebuild our community,' TDC Treasurer Tiffany Edwards said. TDC board members will meet with commissioners to explain their recommendation against the tournament. The final decision will be in the hands of county commissioners It will take four of the five commissioners to add the golf tournament to the Tourist Development Plan. The tournament is on the June 23rd commission meeting agenda. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
