One of the meeting's attendees told Ukrainska Pravda on condition of anonymity: "What stood out the most was Budanov's response. Someone asked him how much time we have left. Kyrylo, with his calm smile, replied: 'If there are no serious negotiations by the summer, dangerous processes could unfold, threatening Ukraine's very existence."
Ukraine's Defence Intelligence has denied that its head, Kyrylo Budanov, stated during a closed meeting in the Verkhovna Rada about threats to Ukraine's existence.

Russia's Putin calls for quick development of drone forces

(Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that drones had played a major role in the conflict in Ukraine and called for the rapid development and deployment of separate drone forces within the military. "We are currently creating unmanned systems troops as a separate branch of the military and we need to ensure their rapid and high-quality deployment and development," Russian news agencies quoted him as saying at a meeting on arms development. Drones have played a leading role for both sides in the more than three-year-old conflict pitting Moscow against Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has since the outbreak of the war in February 2022 stressed the importance of developing a domestic drone development and production industry. Putin told the second day of the gathering that Russia was well aware how Ukraine was dealing with the issue. "But on the whole, I do not believe we are lagging behind on anything," he was quoted as saying. "More to the point, it seems to me we are bringing together good experience with a view to creating just such forces." Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov proposed the creation of a drone force late last year, setting a target date of the third quarter of 2025. Putin also stressed developing air defences, which he said had destroyed more than 80,000 targets during the conflict that Russia still calls a special military operation. "In this respect, a new state armaments programme must ensure the construction of a versatile air defence system capable of operating in any circumstances and efficiently striking air attack weapons, regardless of their type," he said. On the opening day of the meeting, Putin called for due attention to be paid to the nuclear triad of land-based, sea-based and aircraft-launched weapons.

EU names special envoy for Ukrainian refugees, POLITICO reports

Ylva Johansson, former European Commissioner for Home Affairs, will serve as the European Union's new special envoy for Ukrainians in the bloc, POLITICO reported on June 12. According to anonymous officials that spoke to POLITICO, Johansson will fill the newly created post, overseeing the Commission's long-term strategy for Ukrainian refugees currently residing in the European Union. Johansson, a former Swedish minister and European Commission official, previously visited Ukraine on several occasions, including a refugee camp on the border with Romania. She received the Ukrainian order of merit in September 2024. As special envoy, Johansson will be responsible for EU initiatives focused on helping Ukrainian refugees transition into permanent legal statuses or return home. As part of these initiatives, the EU will launch "unity hubs" – information centers jointly managed with the Ukrainian government. The hubs will support Ukrainian refugees to integrate with EU host countries or repatriate to Ukraine. Germany, which has has taken in more than 1 million Ukrainian refugees since the start of the full-scale invasion, recently committed to establishing unity hubs in Berlin. The unity hubs in Berlin will provide Ukrainians with access to educational and career opportunities both in Ukraine and Germany. The European Commission also recently extended temporary protection Ukrainian refugees who fled to the EU following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to Eurostat, 4.26 million Ukrainians currently hold temporary protection status in the EU as of April 2025. Pritzker defends Illinois' sanctuary laws, blasts Trump administration ‘abuses of power'

WASHINGTON (WGN) — Gov. JB Pritzker on Thursday defended Illinois' sanctuary laws before a House committee hearing and blasted the Trump administration for 'abuses of power' amid a crackdown on undocumented immigrants that have spawned protests around the country, including in Chicago. 'Illinois follows the law, but let me be clear: we expect the federal government to follow the law too,' Pritzker told the Republican-led House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. 'We will not participate in abuses of power. We will not violate court orders. We will not ignore the Constitution. We will not defy the Supreme Court, and we will not take away people's rights to peacefully protest.' Pritzker's appearance before the body follows an April invitation from the committee's Republican chairman, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also appeared on invitation, with the trio of Democrats answering questions facing posters of undocumented immigrants charged with violent crimes. Thursday's hearing comes as scenes of unrest play out in Los Angeles amid the federal government's mass deportation efforts. President Trump has threatened to withhold federal funds from 'sanctuary' cities and states. Trump threatens to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities Chicago's history as a sanctuary city spans 40 years, 7 presidents and 5 mayors The appearance on a national stage was a big moment for Pritzker, who's been floated as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. The great-grandson of a Ukrainian immigrant, Pritzker used his opening statements to highlight Illinois' diversity and discuss the work done to support migrants who were bussed to the state from the southern border. 'I have seen firsthand how states have had to shoulder the consequences of a broken immigration system,' Pritzker testified. 'I'm proud of how we have responded by promoting public safety, treating people with dignity, supporting our economy and respecting the rule of law.' To prepare for the appearance, Pritzker retained a Washington, D.C. law firm. A WGN source says the billionaire paid for their services out of his own pocket. He also got an assist from a former White House counsel to President Joe Biden. March 2025 | Chicago mayor defends city's sanctuary status at congressional hearing Chicago's policy that prevents city officials, including police officers, from cooperating with federal immigration authorities has been in place, in some form, for 40 years. In 2017, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill which barred police from arresting anyone solely due to their immigration status. Pritzker signed further legislation in 2021 with additional protections. The Department of Justice claims Illinois' TRUST Act and Chicago's Welcoming City Ordinance are invalid due to the Supremacy Clause. This is a developing story and will be updated.
