All eyes on Dhoni as CSK meets GT in its final game of the season

The Hindu24-05-2025

The cricketing fraternity is officially hours away from morphing into amateur sleuths as Chennai Super Kings looks to plunder Gujarat Titans' home-base when the teams play their final IPL 2025 group-stage fixture at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Sunday.
The stakes are higher for GT, guaranteed a top-two finish if it wins. A loss could still see newly appointed India Test skipper Shubman Gill's side getting two shots at making the final, but it would have to wait for other results. CSK, already eliminated, has nothing to lose.
But come Sunday, mathematical equations will be put on the back burner. Spectators and the broadcaster alike will have their eyes peeled to catch the subtlest change of mannerisms of a 43-year-young M.S. Dhoni.
Over the past few years, CSK's last games of a season have drawn less attention for reasons surrounding the match itself, but more for the possibility of the dreaded retirement announcement from the side's talisman.
Social media had flown off the handle when eagle-eyed fans spotted a pattern of dots and dashes on their beloved Thala's T-shirt ahead of the 2025 pre-season training. It turned out the cryptic message read 'One Last Time' in Morse code. In a rare occurrence, Dhoni's parents added fuel to the rumours by attending a match at Chepauk.
So, it won't be surprising to have Danny Morrison tickling the big elephant in the room at the toss again. However, the Madras makkal (people of Chennai) can only hope the reply is what they have been fond of hearing since 2020.

‘Thought long and hard…': Nicholas Pooran retires from international cricket at 29

Former West Indies T20I captain Nicholas Pooran made a surprise decision on Tuesday as he announced his retirement from international cricket, aged 29. Pooran, who was recently in action in the IPL 2025 season with the Lucknow Super Giants, mentioned the decision as a 'difficult' one as he shared a note on Instagram. 'To the Cricket Public: After much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from International Cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me,' Pooran wrote. The hard-hitting southpaw made his West Indies debut in 2016 and became the team's most capped T20I batter (106) and the highest run-scorer for the side (2275). In only 97 innings, Pooran has smashed 149 T20I sixes, the best for the West Indies and fifth-highest overall. Having amassed over 4000 runs in international cricket, Pooran led the Windies outfit in 17 ODIs and 23 T20Is between 2021 and 2022. From a young boy with a dream to wear the Maroon, to a global star inspiring millions — WI thank you, Nicky P. 🙏🏽 — Windies Cricket (@windiescricket) June 9, 2025 'To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart. To the fans – thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion. To my family, friends, and teammates, thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all. Though this International chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead,' Pooran added. Pooran recently topped the six-hitting charts in the IPL season with 40 maximums, and remains one of the most feared ball-strikers in the franchise circuit. Pooran only follows his Caribbean compatriots Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell in the T20 sixes charts, with a staggering 639 sixes in 398 appearances.

Adrian le Roux replaces Soham Desai as India's new strength and conditioning coach ahead of Test series vs England

Adrian le Roux New Delhi: Adrian le Roux, a highly respected sports scientist, has replaced Soham Desai as the Indian men's cricket team's strength and conditioning coach for their upcoming England tour. This marks Le Roux's second stint with the national team, having previously held the position from January 2002 to May 2003. His appointment was announced alongside training footage released by the BCCI as the team prepares for a five-Test series beginning June 20th at Headingley. With head coach Gautam Gambhir overseeing the session, pace bowlers Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Jasprit Bumrah practiced alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill. Following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill was appointed India's 37th Test captain. He leads a relatively inexperienced team aiming to secure India's first Test series victory in England in over 15 years. England will host India in a five-test series at Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford, and The Oval. Several Indian players, some from the national team, are currently in England playing in a warm-up match against the England Lions in Northampton to prepare for the series. After a successful six-year run with the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, culminating in a near-championship finish in 2025, Le Roux returned to the national team. He shared an emotional goodbye message on Instagram, reflecting on his time with the Kings and the relationships he forged. 'And with that, a six-year journey with the @punjabkingsipl comes to an end. Went all the way to the final this season In the fast-moving world of professional sport, it's easy to get caught up in the results,' he wrote. 'But every now and then you pause and realise that while it's about performance and pressure, it's also about people, shared moments and friendships that will last a lifetime. As I step into a new role with @indiancricketteam, I'll carry these memories with me.' India's upcoming five-Test series in England marks the beginning of their new World Test Championship cycle and will be head coach Rahul Dravid's second tenure with the team. Shubman Gill will also lead the team for the first time during this significant tour.

'You don't want MS Dhoni behind in a big game...': Shastri compares legendary cricketer's fast hands to a ‘pickpocket'

Two-time World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame on Monday. The wicketkeeper-batter, who continues to represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is for India in a 15-year-long career. During the ICC Hall of Fame ceremony, former India head coach Ravi Shastri gave a hilarious tribute to the 43-year-old, comparing him to a 'pickpocket.' Tipping his hat to Dhoni's wicketkeeping skills and how he has still got it, Shastri said that you would never want someone of his ability behind the stumps in a crucial match because he can change the complexion of the game with either a catch or stumping. Speaking of Dhoni, the right-handed batter is considered to be one of the finest captains India has ever had. Under his leadership, India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. In 2011, after 28 years, India won the ODI World Cup as Dhoni played a match-winning knock in the final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium. 'He has hands faster than that of a pickpocket. If you're ever in India, going for a big game, especially in Ahmedabad, you don't want MS behind you; watch that back. The wallet will disappear,' Ravi Shastri said during the ICC ceremony. Also Read: MS Dhoni inducted into ICC Hall Of Fame Shastri also praised Dhoni for not letting his emotions get the better of him, saying the latter remains the same whether he scores a century or gets out for zero. "He gets out for zero is the same; he wins the World Cup is the same; he gets a hundred the same, and two hundred the same. There is absolutely, you know, no difference," he added. Under Dhoni, India also dominated the Test rankings for 18 months from December 2009. He also oversaw India's Champions Trophy-winning campaign in the UK in 2013. Dhoni holds the record for captaining his country in the most number of international matches. Regarded as a white-ball great, Dhoni was also named in the ICC's ODI and T20I Teams of the Decade at the end of 2019. Dhoni scored 4876 runs in 90 Tests at an average of 38.08. He also registered 256 catches and 38 stumpings in the longest format of the game. Speaking of ODIs, Dhoni amassed 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57. While in the shortest format of the game, the right-hander registered 1617 runs at an average of 37.60. Across both the white-ball formats, Dhoni afflicted 157 stumpings. He also took 378 catches across both ODIs and T20Is.
