European Union leaders on Thursday demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and signalled that a formal review of Israel's compliance with the bloc's human rights standards would take place next month.
In a joint statement released after a summit in Brussels, the heads of the EU's 27 member states called for 'an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages,' describing it as a necessary step toward a lasting halt to the conflict.

The European Council also acknowledged a report assessing Israel's adherence to Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which ties bilateral relations to respect for human rights and democratic principles. The Council said discussions on possible responses would continue in July, depending on developments on the ground.
The EU's external diplomatic service had raised concerns last week, stating there were signs Israel may have violated its obligations under the agreement amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The bloc has long faced internal divisions over its response to the Israel-Palestine crisis, with member states split on how to balance security concerns with humanitarian obligations. However, Thursday's unified call reflects growing pressure within the EU to reassess its diplomatic stance as civilian casualties mount in the region.

Marco Rubio Calls Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan PM Thanks US For 'Role' In Ceasefire With India
Last Updated: Sources say Sharif aims to internationalise the Kashmir issue and solidify domestic support amidst the challenges posed by Imran Khan Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received a telephone call from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday evening, with discussions also covering India and the Iran-Israel tensions, CNN-News18 has learnt. During their conversation, the Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for President Donald Trump's leadership in securing the ceasefire between Iran and Israel. He also thanked Secretary Rubio for 'the US role in facilitating the Pakistan-India ceasefire", despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi's denial of mediation. Both leaders agreed to continue strengthening Pakistan-US relations, with a focus on enhanced trade. Sharif assured that Pakistan would maintain its constructive role in promoting peace in the Middle East. Secretary Rubio acknowledged these efforts and expressed the US's interest in collaborating with Pakistan to ensure regional stability. Top diplomatic sources said that Shehbaz Sharif is keen to present Pakistan as a mediator between the US and China for issues concerning the Muslim Ummah. His public appreciation of the US aims to internationalise the Kashmir issue and solidify domestic support amidst the challenges posed by Imran Khan, they added. Despite the downgraded protocol of this call, with General Asim Munir being the main power broker engaging directly with top US officials, Shehbaz Sharif seeks US recognition to bolster his legitimacy, especially after President Trump's meeting with Pakistan's army chief, the sources said. Facing an economic crisis and the looming influence of China, Shehbaz is striving to secure trade concessions, aid, and IMF loan relaxations from the US while carefully managing relations with China, they said. The international community recognises Pakistan's difficulties following the conflict with India and sees Shehbaz's actions as an attempt to address domestic concerns by crediting the US for the ceasefire, the sources said. Iran says war with Israel caused 'serious' damage to nuclear sites
Jun 27, 2025 01:48 AM IST Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday that damage to Iran's nuclear sites from the 12-day war with Israel was "serious", as the country begins assessing the conflict's impact. A satellite image shows damage to the tunnel entrances of the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Research Center, following US airstrikes amid the Iran-Israel conflict, in Isfahan, Iran, June 22, 2025.(Reuters) "A detailed assessment of the damage is being carried out by experts from the Atomic Energy Organization (of Iran)," he told state television. "Now, the discussion of demanding damages and the necessity of providing them has been placed as one of the important issues on the country's diplomatic agenda," he added. "These damages are serious, and expert studies and political decision-making are underway at the same time." President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that air strikes that the United States launched against Iran's nuclear sites in support of ally Israel "obliterated" the facilities.

Maha DGP puts police on high alert ahead of Muharram & Devshayani Ekadashi amid Iran-Israel tension
Nagpur: Maharashtra's director general of police (DGP), Rashmi Shukla, has placed the state's police force, including Nagpur, on high alert ahead of Muharram and Devshayani Ekadashi, both coinciding on July 6. The directive, issued via statewide video conferencing on Wednesday, is in response to escalating geopolitical tensions due to the Iran-Israel conflict, which could disrupt communal harmony during these significant religious observances. In Nagpur, where the Shia population is relatively small, city police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure peace and security. Muharram, a solemn period marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, involves mourning rituals and processions, particularly among Shia Muslims in pockets of Nagpur like Mominpura, Hasanbagh and Kamptee. Simultaneously, Devshayani Ekadashi, a major Hindu festival, draws thousands to temples like the Koradi Mahalaxmi Temple for fasting and prayers. The convergence of these events demands meticulous planning to maintain law and order. Following the March 17 riots in central Nagpur, city police intensified proactive measures. "We are enhancing intelligence gathering and closely monitoring community activities to pre-empt untoward incidents," said a senior police official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Police are also engaging with community leaders from both Hindu and Muslim communities to foster cooperation and peace. DGP Shukla emphasised vigilance, urging officers to promptly report suspicious activities. In Nagpur, additional checkpoints and quick-response teams would be deployed to monitor processions and gatherings. "Our priority is to create a safe environment for all communities to observe their rituals," the official added. Police are also leveraging technology, including CCTV surveillance, to keep a close watch on potential flashpoints.
