"GG bhai wanted me to bat at no. 4, and so did I": Shubman Gill on new role in Test Series vs England
Leeds [UK], June 19 (ANI): With India gearing up for the much-anticipated Test series against England starting June 20 in Leeds, Shubman Gill has confirmed that he will bat in the crucial number four position in the batting order.
Speaking about the shift in his batting role, Gill revealed, 'After Virat (Kohli) bhai retired, me and GG (Gautam Gambhir) bhai had a discussion, and he wanted me to bat at number 4. I also wanted to bat at that number.'
The number 4 spot, previously occupied by Virat Kohli, has traditionally been a pivotal role in India's Test lineup. Gill's technical prowess and composure under pressure make him a strong contender to carry forward the legacy.
India will be relying on the in-form Gill to anchor the innings and provide stability against a potent English bowling attack, especially in conditions that can be challenging for subcontinental batters.
While playing at number three, Shubman featured in 17 matches and garnered 1,019 runs at 37.74, with three centuries and as many fifties, all coming on home turf.
In overseas conditions, Gill has featured in seven Tests and managed just 212 runs at 19.27. Besides captaincy, Gill will have to take the legacy of the number four spot to a new level, considering how Virat and Tendulkar made the position their own.
Earlier India vice-captain Rishabh Pant announced that he will continue to stick to the number five in the upcoming five high-stakes Tests, while newly-crowned Test captain Shubman Gill will take stalwart Virat Kohli's number four spot in the format.
After Virat bid adieu to the Test format last month, speculation were there around who would take up the mantle of bearing the responsibility of playing at number four, a spot that has been earlier held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

New Delhi, June 19 (UNI) Legendary India all rounder Kapil Dev has expressed surprise at the Pataudi Trophy for India-England Test matches being renamed as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, describing the development as "strange." The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to rename the Test series hosted by England against India to honour Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar and legendry English fast bowler James Anderson. "It feels a little strange… like, does this also happen? But that's okay, everything works in cricket. At the end of the day, there is no difference. Cricket is cricket. The cricket on the field should be the same," said Dev on Wednesday. He was speaking at an event organised by Three Sixty to commemorate his iconic 175 not out against Zimbabwe during a 1983 World Cup match at Tunbridge Wells. The earlier name, the Pataudi Trophy, was instituted in 2007 in honour of the legendary Indian batsman and captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. The decision was questioned by many as the illustrious Pataudi family has deep ties to both Indian and English cricket. While Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi is the only Test cricketer to have played for both England and India, his son Mansur captained India and played county cricket in England. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi is rated as one of the best Indian captain of all time, and it was under his stewartship that India achieved their first overseas Test victory against New Zealand in 1967. As per reports, even Sachin Tendulkar and ICC chairman Jay Shah are attempting to convince the ECB to reverse their decision to rename the Trophy. The ECB has, however, retained the Pataudi Medal for Excellence, which will be awarded to the winning captain of the series. Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 20 (ANI): Ahead of the first Test of India's tour of England, former India coach Gary Kirsten spoke about newly appointed Test skipper Shubman Gill and his role as captain for the England tour. After batting wizards Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bid adieu to Test cricket last month, India was left short on experience. With India bereft of its torchbearers, the management turned to youngsters to mark the beginning of a new era. After their decision, the captaincy baton was passed from Rohit to Gill. Speaking on Shubman Gill's Test captaincy, Gary Kirsten told JioHotstar, 'I think Shubman is going to be a great leader. He's a smart cricketer--he's got a good brain for the game and understands his game. He's very talented and a nice human being, which I think is really important. While fans mourn the end of an era, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar offered a grounded perspective, emphasising the natural progression of generational shifts in Indian cricket. Tendulkar, speaking on the development, acknowledged the emotional void left by the trio but maintained that the process of transition is nothing new to Indian cricket. Tendulkar also expressed confidence in the talent pool available in India, calling for patience and faith in the newcomers. 'As far as skill is concerned, in our country there are so many skilful players. I hope they make the most of the opportunity given to them,' he added. Reflecting on the retirements of Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin, Sachin was clear-eyed but appreciative. 'So, that process, what you said about Virat and Rohit and I'll add another name to that, Ashwin has also retired. These three retirements, I mean, that will go on. Their contribution will always be appreciated,' he noted.
