Starting the season with the Race Party Car Show

Yahoo12-04-2025

ROWENA, S.D. (KELO) — The dirt track racing season at Huset's Speedway in Brandon is scheduled to start one month from today on Mother's Day, May 11.
It's was foggy morning on Friday of cleaning the outdoor coolers and sprucing up the grounds at Red Rock Bar & Grill in advance of Saturday's Race Party Car Show.
'It's a fun time to get the local racers together with their cars and everything before they get dirty and banged up on the race track,' Red Rock Bar & Grill owner Mitch Runge said.

The afternoon event is expected to include dozens of local drivers and a variety of race cars.
'There'll be everything from go-karts and quads to 410 sprint cars,' Runge said.
Runge says the event allows fans of all ages to get hands-on with the cars.
'Everybody can kind of hang out, enjoy them, and get up close and personal and touch them, kids can come and see them,' Runge said.
'One of the best things, the funnest things for me, is to have the little kids coming up and being able to shake their hands and have them sit in your car and you bounce them a little bit and let them do their thing inside the race car,' sprint car driver Jay Masur said.
Masur has spent nearly five decades with the MED-Star Dirt Track rescue team. He's also a second-year sprint car driver and considers everyone at the track family.
'You get to go see your family there and you don't have to worry about them pushing you into the wall or anything else, by accident most of the time, but it's that time where you can talk and have fun about the things that happened last year that weren't so fun,' Masur said.
'I'm kind of the older guy out there now but it's still fun to drive,' sprint car driver John Lambertz said.
Lambertz has been racing sprint cars for more than 30 years and says he changes up his car every season, adding an element of excitement to the race party.
'You bust your hump all winter long to get your cars done and you kind of get to show them off, all your hard work that you did on the off-season,' Lambertz said.
A former driver himself, Runge is ready for opening night and the future of the sport.
'Local racing is strong,' Runge said.
Drivers are encouraged to unload their cars at Red Rock Bar & Grill between 9 and 11 Saturday morning, with the party running from noon until 4 p.m.

County Treasurers frustrated with 605 Drive & vehicle title delays

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — In February, the South Dakota Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicles Division launched a new title and registration system. County Treasurers all over the state are responsible for issuing titles and registering vehicles using the new system. But it hasn't gone as planned. For workers at county treasures offices all over the state, including here in Minnehaha County, it has been a tough and frustrating 4 months. We spoke with several treasurers' offices by phone,One worker called the rollout of the new 605 Drive System 'a nightmare.' 35-year-old arrested in early morning crime spree including stolen bus Hanis Ibbit came to get his registration renewed in Minnehaha County, he says it went well. 'I was actually here to get my renewal, my little stickers that go on my plates. I usually stayed about 10 to 15 minutes before, but today was very, very fast,' said Ibbit. Minnehaha County Treasurer Kris Swanson says regular registrations like Ibbit's are going fairly smoothly, but when it comes to working with titles and anything out of the ordinary, these workers are experiencing glitches. I asked Swanson what has been the biggest frustration from her point of view. 'I think just being able to contact the state for help, they're obviously very busy because they've got to cover 66 counties, and so when you call in you don't get an immediate answer which can be kind of frustrating because you've got people at the window that we need to help as soon as we can,' said Swanson. Swanson says parts of the system work one day, not the next. She says the system is improving, but not fast enough for her liking. 'My staff is exhausted, I can tell you that. I think they need some mental health days, but I find this one to be a little rough.' According to the state, the old system, SDCARS, was 'brittle and quite old' and needed to be replaced. The new system does offer advantages, but Swanson feels it could take up to another year to work out all the glitches. 'I'm one that, I want it to happen yesterday, so I wish it would go a little faster, but we are just going to keep moving forward with it and just take it as it comes,' said Swanson. Swanson has talked with county treasurers in South Dakota about the new system. 'We're basically on the same page, I think everybody is exhausted, a little frustrated, they do say it's gotten better slowly, but it still has got a ways to go,' said Swanson. Swanson says she appreciates customers' patience. She also says state workers in Pierre are working hard, and they are understaffed as well. The state Department of Revenue says the 605 Drive system is more modern and is continually being updated and upgraded. The new system will also offer better security and auditing. Camp Drive: Kids learn how to work on vehicles

Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — Camp Drive is a hands-on two-day experience for kids to learn more about vehicles. Black Hills Tire shuts down operations each summer to put this camp on with their auto mechanics. South Dakota's fall pheasant outlook is 'very positive' These 40 campers – ages 12 to 15 – are going through eight different stations, both learning and performing important tasks. 'There's the tire session where they get to take off a tire and put it back on, just about safety. The alignment, which is really cool, talks about how it's important that all the components of your car, the suspension components, are accurate and well and balanced. Oil changes, just general maintenance like how to test a battery. The breaks, those are super popular, they get to take breaks apart and put them back together,' Black Hills Tire Owner Tenise Chapman said. Camper Brock Mayers is back for his 2nd year to learn more about cars. 'I'm kind of relearning how to weld and HVAC is also really interesting and the breaks, that's really fun,' 7th Grader Brock Mayes said. These students learn eight different stations, and can help pique their interest in a future career. 'We actually have two kids that work for us now that they came to Camp Drive the first two years and now they work part time for us in the summer because they got introduced to it and they liked it and wanted to follow their passions. So it's really cool,' Chapman said. 'These skills could help because you can save a lot on mechanic bills and you could work on your own car. And if your car were to break down on the side of the road you could know how to change a tire and not have to call a tow truck. And this could also bring some really good job opportunities.' Mayes Said The camp will culminate with a Pit Crew Challenge tomorrow, where these kids will put their skills to the test in a friendly competition. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
