Film review: Sinners is a heady mix of sex, garlic and the blues
Sex and garlic and the blues. That's Sinners in a nutshell. It's also about the only thing in this big-budget production from writer/director Ryan Coogler that would fit in one. This movie is loud and proud, big and brash.
And original. I mean, yes, it involves vampires, not to mention a character named Annie (played by Wunmi Wosaku) who knows all the ways to kill them or at least keep them at bay. But they don't even show their faces (or fangs) until about half-way through the film. Though it's bloody terrifying when they do.
The setting is Clarksdale, Mississippi — birthplace of the blues! — on a sunny Saturday in the fall of 1932. Twin brothers Smoke and Stack, both played by Cooler regular Michael B. Jordan, have just rolled into town after an absence of the better part of a decade. They've amassed some cash, and they aim to purchase an abandoned mill, turn it into a juke joint, and get even richer.
But the joint needs its juke, and so they round up their cousin Sammie (musician-turned-actor Miles Caton) and harmonica maestro Delta Slim (Delroy Lindo). Cornbread (Omar Miller), whom they pluck out of a cotton field, will be the bouncer.
They also get reacquainted with several women who haven't forgotten them, including Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) and the aforementioned Annie, whom I'm guessing saw the original Nosferatu movie at least twice when it came out 10 years earlier.

Coogler got his feature debut in a big way, with 2013's Fruitvale Station (original titled Fruitvale), which won the Grand Jury prize and the audience award when it debited at the Sundance Film Festival. Despite being snubbed at the Oscars, it led to Coogler directing the Rocky sequel Creed and two Black Panther movies, all of which he also co-wrote.
But Sinners is his first non-franchise, sole-writing-credit film since Fruitvale Station, albeit with a budget two orders of magnitude bigger than that film's $900,000. It's a joy to watch, and also to listen to, with a bombastic score by Ludwig Grandson (The Mandalorian, Oppenheimer) that dips in and out of the film, sometimes giving way to performances by one of more of the characters, before picking up the heavy lifting again.
It also does some lovely light lifting, as when a character's three strikes on a stubborn match perfectly synchronize with the music's rhythm. Or when a necklace torn from a body signals the end of a song. These little harmonies are wonderful precisely because they're not overdone.
I found myself reminded several times of the 1979 song The Devil Went Down to Georgia, given the film's portrayal of the intersection of secular music and something evil in the world. And I was knocked silly and sideways by a raucous scene in Smoke/Stack's establishment, in which Sammie's guitar music conjures up collaborations with phantoms of past and future performers, including a 19th-century Japanese dancer and a 21st-century electric guitarist. If the TARDIS from Dr. Who had a disco, this is what it would look like.
That scene was filmed with Imax cameras, and although not every part of the movie uses the full size of the screen, Imax is still the best way to see Sinners if you can. Failing that, go for the biggest screen you can find.
Sinners opens April 18 in theatres.

Lilo & Stitch Quietly Passed A Box Office Milestone That Previously Went To Sinners

We're slightly less than halfway through the 2025 movie schedule, and some wild times have already been had at the box office. A pair of Marvel movies failed to make their usual explosive debut, and instead, one of the biggest movies of the year has been Sinners, an original film not connected to any franchise. The film had previously been the second highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, but Disney's Lilo & Stitch remake has now taken that honor. At over $267 million at the domestic box office, Sinners had been the number two movie of 2025. Lilo & Stitch now sits at nearly $285 million. It's going to take some doing for Disney's little blue troublemaker to become the highest-grossing movie of the year, however. A Minecraft Movie currently sits atop the box office at $423 million. With numerous major blockbusters set to come out over the next couple of months, it's quite likely that Sinners will continue to slide down the box office chart. Still, wherever it happens to end up, its achievement cannot be overstated. Franchise filmmaking had already been the focus of studios back when more people still went to theaters, and in an era where getting people to do that is becoming increasingly difficult, audiences aren't leaving the house to see anything other than familiar franchises. To be fair, the fact that it took Lilo & Stitch as long as it did to overtake Sinners at the box office is a testament to the film's popularity and staying power. Stitch had an opening weekend that was three times that of Sinners. Sinners, however, had virtually no drop in its box office take between its first two weekends, a nearly unheard of statistic. Lilo & Stitch saw a nearly 60% drop between its first two weekends, which is fairly standard for major tentpole releases. If Lilo & Stitch means anything in the broader box office landscape, it's that despite the overall failure of Snow White, live-action remakes of popular animated films are still popular with fans. Lilo & Stitch is in the upper tier of the box office results for those films, only behind movies that grossed a billion dollars worldwide, like Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, and The Lion King. Lilo & Stitch seems unlikely to reach quite those heights; it's broken $600 million and the global box office, but with the movie having been released in all countries, save Japan, where it will open this weekend, it has certainly made most of the money it's going to make. The major thing that may stop the momentum of Lilo & Stitch may, ironically, be another family-friendly live-action remake of a popular animated film. How to Train Your Dragon is set to hit theaters next weekend.

Vampire Thriller ‘Sinners' Already Stakes Top Spot On Streaming Charts

Written and directed by Coogler, Sinners opened in theaters on April 18. The logline for Sinners reads, 'Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.' Coogler's Black Panther and Creed movie series collaborator Jordan stars in Sinners as twin brothers, Smoke and Stack. Rated R, Sinners also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wumni Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo. Produced by Warner Bros., Sinners premiered on digital streaming via premium video on demand last Tuesday on such platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Movies Anywhere, Prime Video and YouTube. Combined with the film's $82.6 million in international ticket sales, Sinners has a worldwide tally of $353.1 million to date against a $90 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, per The Numbers. While Sinners has become a blockbuster hit, Ryan Coogler said in a recent interview with Ebony Magazine that he's never given thought to making a sequel to the film. 'I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,' Coogler told Ebony. 'I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.' Instead, Coogler added, he 'wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. 'I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it,' Coogler explained to Ebony. 'That was always my intention.' Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, is still playing in theaters and available for purchase or rent on PVOD.
